C/D: People who carry umbrellas when it's snowing

If it's very windy then maybe it's excusable. Otherwise, it looks stupid. I don't know why, it just does. Wear a hat or a hood.

Why can't they enjoy the feeling of snowflakes landing on their faces? What's not to like?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking about this the other day.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

i hate umbrellas in all conditions

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

If it's windy, though, the snow gets under the brolly and the brolly gets blown about.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

you study physics?

crossposts

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

mark s, it is unfair to tar all umbrella users with the same brush.

I know, most of them are inconsiderate.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

what fresh hell is this, a world where people will carry umbrellas in snowy weather?

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

do you study physics?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

no but I have studied the fine art of not acting like a crazy person, i.e. carrying a large device to shield me from potential injury-by-snowflake.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

you think umbrellas are only to stop potential injury-by-raindrop.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

Whether it's raining or snowing, you have to hold the umbrella at the proper angle so that it isn't blown inside out. On one hand, blowing snow can hurt a bit when it smacks into your face. On the other hand, you don't get soaked like you do in the rain, plus you don't have to worry about carrying around an umbrella and looking like an idiot. The choice is clear to me.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

Umbrella etiquette is on the decline. People don't realize that there's little metal spikes on the tip of the ribs. I wear two eyepatches now because of careless umbrelladors.

andy --, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

you make it sound like snow is nothing like rain or you try to.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

fuck one brolly

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

umbrellas are good because, when it's not raining, you can jab your friends, in the bum, with them, when they're closed, and, when it's raining, they keep a lot of you dry, when they're open.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

snow is nature's own magic spice, rain is like acid piss.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

I don't have any hoods or hats that aren't silly.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

uh, I really wish I had an umbrella on the way to the subway last night, even though i was wearing a hat, as i had to aim the latter in the appropriate direction and angle to even attempt to avoid the driving pellets (not soft fluffy flakes, thanks) of close-to-freezing-mark snow that managed to cover my coat in 5 minutes of being outside.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

Yes, that situation is the sort of exception that I was referring to.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

this thread doesn't make sense.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

ungrateful louts, denying nature's love dust

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

I love umbrellas and I have so far been nimble and conscientious enough to avoid either receiving or inflicting any umbrellas-related injuries. We don't get snow here and when I go to the mountains I gird my loins with all of my rugged mountaineering gear - so no paraneige.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

i've never seen or heard of this, but being cold AND wet is hell, so i'm gonna say classic. plus, willing to look goofy in order to avoid discomfort is classic.

The story of the poison umbrella assassination on London's Waterloo Bridge in 1978!

andy --, Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

see if he'd put the poison on the end of one of wire ribs and scratched markov on the head it would have been much less suspicious (except you'd have known him by the trail of other inadvertent dead)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

my umbrella has rounded wooden bits, on the ends of the ribs.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

like a mace?

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

mark s, I would never hit you, with my umbrella, by mistake or not, since I am a little taller, than you, and because I notice people, around me, and lift my umbrella, out of the way, even if they, too, have an umbrella and do not afford me any consideration, whatsoever.

I think it, probably, rains more, in glasgow, than london. doesn't it?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

It always seems a little effete to me, but I guess it makes sense if the snow is very wet.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

What if you've taken your umbrella out because it's cloudy, and you think it's going to rain, except it snows? it's impossible to not upset some people in this situation, you open your umbrella, then it's "oh you fucking ponce it's only SNOW" for some, you keep your umbrella unused, it's "why do you carry an umbrella if you don't USE IT? fucking poser" for others.

I like carrying umbrellas. But then I am indeed a fucking poser.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 00:14 (twenty years ago)

ken has discovered the root, of this thread's nonsense.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

i studied physics

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

I carry an umbrella at any opportunity. Holding one in snow is the done thing, and you get that lovely collection of sno on top which you can shake of onto to the hooded passerby. Hoods are ugly. On a very sunny day, I use my umbrella as a parasol.

I'm a little saddend by Mark S' remarks on this thread.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

today, i pulled the hood on my jacket up and also used my umbrella. moisture, be it drops or flakes, is moisture and as such will cause hair frizz.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

the only umbrellas i hate are those humongous golf ones that fucks seem to think are appropriate for small nyc sidewalks. your hair isn't that important, lady!

xpost - HAHAHAHAHAH!

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

sorry lauren!

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

My hair has gone static, is there a cure?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

fire

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

stence, i would never use a golf umbrella!

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

I don't like the smell of burning hair.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

well, it was more about the hair/lady thing.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

That's a nice picture. They would look silly with hoods.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

I think if the snow is icy and pelting you sideways, it's perfectly acceptable to deploy an umbrella. It's also better for vision than having your hood up. The other day the weather was like this, and I had to use my scarf for protection and looked like a gulag refugee, and then I almost was knocked down by a car.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

http://www.theglasgowstory.com/images/TGSA04809_m.jpg

A better solution.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

The snow is crap here anyway, never needed a coat with a hood, they just remind of primary school.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

you get wet when it snows too btw.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

indeed! a melted snowflake is the equiv of 3 raindrops by my estimation.

then again if u wear things with hoods perhaps umbrellas are not ur cup of tea in the first place.

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

it's okay, you're from california.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

OMG WATER! IT'LL WASH AWAY MY TAN!!

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Get a waterproof coat with a hood. Umbrellas are a nuisance.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

avoiding hair-frizz is v. impt. not that hats are going to help. hoods don't always hurt, though.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 3 March 2005 03:28 (twenty years ago)

my roommate does this and he is a complete fucking jerkoff.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 3 March 2005 03:41 (twenty years ago)

I inherited a fine umbrella many years ago. Someday, when the weather looks bad enough, I'll use it.

jim wentworth (wench), Thursday, 3 March 2005 03:59 (twenty years ago)

six months pass...
Snow is nice on your face, but not so nice on your suede jacket.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

Heheh, Alba, how many more umbrella links are there? :-)

nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

Well, there are two more Umbrellas of Cherbourg threads, for a start.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

umbrellas are the shit.

umbrellas are the shit, Thursday, 15 September 2005 10:11 (twenty years ago)
