Statistics Query: Do more women change their names more than men?

I predict this is the case, but I have no way of knowing.

I've only known a few people that have changed their Christian names, but they are all women.

Are women more likely to change their names (from Barbara to "Astrid" for instance) than men? I think so.

I don't think I've known anyone who has legally changed their first name, but of 'nicknames' that stick (ie are in constant use and may as well be their real name) I have only known men to be successful.

I have changed my surname, but I guess that doesn't count, even though it wasn't through marriage.

who changes their names?

criminals
actors
radio DJs
er performers in general then
some women who get married (I don't think this is what you are talking about though)
people who lose bets or take dares

I am only speaking about so-called "vanity" name changes. It's funny, now that I think about it, I have known a couple NorCal guys who had hippy names and then changed them to more modest names (I knew a guy that went from "Hawk" to "Mark" for instance.)... So I think men change their names in the OTHER direction, from wild to more bland.

But I think more women are unhappy with their names (Leslie's, for instance) and so think a new name will add pizzazz to to their lives.

I have frequently thought of changing my first and second names as well as my last. But then have realised that quite frankly, nobody is going to take Vroom-Vroom Korg Trident Mk II Kawasaki seriously at all.

I know, hm, 2 women who have changed their first names and 2 women who have changed their surnames (not counting married women). And 0 men who have done either. QED?

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 3 March 2005 09:16 (twenty years ago)

My brother legally changed his first name - mainly because he was given a Gaelic name which is unpronouncable to most Americans.

I kept the first name of my birth, but changed my surname. (not because of marriage - but as a stage name.)

So there you go...
