Have you been in a (workplace) Union? S/D?

It seems to be a fading thing in the old USofA. I have indeed been a member--of the United Food & Commercial Workers Union. For my $30/month, they vouchsafed me a minimum wage job ($4.35/hour at the time) for less than full time with no benefits.

My granddad was a union coalminer, and it was no doubt a good thing for him. It's probably a good thing today, were the union not more interested in its own existence than the workers' welfare. SO TELL ME ABOUT YOUR UNION EXPERIENCE.

I've been in a national teacher's union for the past three years and have been our building rep.

Good stuff. They helped get rid of mandatory fingerprint sign-in, kept a little bit of health benefit pay in our pockets and various other things. Great for threatening mean principals with.

I was in a teacher's union last year. They were pretty timid as regards conditions, but they were great with negotiating pay increases.
