OK I need to marry a rich lawyer so I can have all this. The whole collection! It's so unfair. I love love love this big time and I can't even afford a single piece. Does Rochas need a street team? I'll go to Washington wearing it and get all the rich Republicans to start buying.

Arrrgh. If I lived in Paris I could at least go in a shop and look at some of this. I don't know what it is about Theyskens in particular but his work really strikes me, I just love it - there's no point in trying to recreate looks like these, you can't. I'd really like to see them up close.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 3 March 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

all the frocks are gorgeous, esp. the first one, as kate points out. the first one is so gorgeous, it hurts.

What, no boutiques with Theyskens items in DC? Surely not (pfff! chortle!).

My oldest best friend works in government there and does A LOT of whining about how much the clothes choice sucks - to the point where a personal shopper has been deployed, but to little avail...

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 3 March 2005 09:30 (twenty years ago)

I don't even live in DC now, it's even more dire than that. But when I go back I don't plan on working for the gov't so can probably wear whatever I like. Also Condi Rice made it OK to own a decent coat and boots, it seems. But really, the only place to get anything interesting in DC is to trawl through my favorite Alexandria thrift in Old Town and hope that some old money people have cleaned out their closets. Why doesn't your friend just hop a flight or the Amtrak to NYC for a day or two, though?

Anyway if I were back in Paris I don't know if I'd have the nerve to walk into shops on the Ave Montaigne anyway, they tend to glare at people like me who obv aren't there to buy things.

can we talk about what they are made of, is it satin or taffeta--i was just bitching to a friend that they dont make taffeta dresses for 340 lb men.

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 3 March 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

A lot of it is stretch silk satin, I believe.

Someone must make such a dress. Have you looked on eBay? I am not joking, eBay is this giant cauldron of, I don't know, liberalism where the powers-that-be are constantly trying to promote a certain image and meanwhile, the buyers and sellers are developing coded market-specific languages to deal in all sorts of things. So if you knew the right search term, you might find one. But I suspect it would be tacky, dreadfully tacky. What you need is Jean Paul Gaultier.

daria g (daria g), Thursday, 3 March 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

or rei, rei would totally do a taffeta dress for a man.

I was looking for something as good as the Rochas collection from style.com but there wasn't anything.

wow that last suit thing and the middle dress in the opening post are fantastic.

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Friday, 4 March 2005 04:24 (twenty years ago)

I never post on them, but I like these threads!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 4 March 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

What, no boutiques with Theyskens items in DC?

Possibly Saks-Jandel up in Chevy Chase, but even then it would be the most conservative items from the collection.

And I could make something not dissimilar to the last two pictures, but the effect on me wouldn't be nearly as cool.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 4 March 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

Dude if you can make something not dissimilar to that I'd pay you to do it! That is so awesome.

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Friday, 4 March 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

Daria, what's the name of your favored thrift in Alexandria?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 4 March 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

The Prevention of Blindness society thrift shop on King Street. It's close to Misha's coffee house. When you are walking up King Street and are hit with a massive waft of fresh ground coffee, go about one more block. There's another secret thrift shop off one of the cross streets before you hit the big King St/Duke St intersection.. it's across from a big TJ Maxx store or something along those lines. I think it closes for the summer.

I've found some great stuff at these places, they don't compare to the giant thrifts here in New England, but they're not bad for the DC area - most of the hipsters don't know about them or don't spend much time in Alexandria, so they are not as picked over as, say, the Goodwill in Arlington. There's a big Value Village thrift in College Park but I've found it to be pretty dire.

Why am I telling you this, though? Those are MY secret thrifts!!! :)

I'm more and more fascinated by the third dress in the opening post. Something about the cut of it.. it's so perfect.

daria g (daria g), Friday, 4 March 2005 05:05 (twenty years ago)

i think i know what you mean. it seems molded but also flowing.
