maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 3 March 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

I would if I knew what it stood for.

NRQ, Thursday, 3 March 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 3 March 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

south by southwest - music conference/festival in austin, texas.

I will be there working on an australian music showcase, see www.australianmusiccollective.com. if you wanna come ot the aussie bbq rsvp on the website above - free beer/wine and bbq!

Johanna (Johanna), Thursday, 3 March 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

You're not going Stevie? What if Daniel Johnson jams with Tomahawk and you miss it?

I'm not going either this year... Another year without Shiner bock.

andy --, Thursday, 3 March 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Hey guys, mail me at missmisery73@gmail.com if you want to meet up.

I'll be in the midst of moving (to Austin) but I'd love to meet up with ilXOrs for drinks. :)

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Thursday, 3 March 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

come to the Aussie BBQ!

Johanna (Johanna), Thursday, 3 March 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

I'll be there -- my band is playing a daytime party on Saturday at Momo's -- but it looks like it might be a quick in-and-out visit for me.

I definitely won't be around on Wednesday or Thursday, but if I get in before Friday night, I'd like to see Cut Copy. (Speaking of Aussie bands.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

jaymc - what is your band?

johanna - the BBQ sounds fun! im going to put it on my calendar.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

You're not going Stevie? What if Daniel Johnson jams with Tomahawk and you miss it?

Andy, it burns...

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

My band. (The party we're playing is with Head of Femur, The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir, Edith Frost, Manishevitz, and Grizzly Bear.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

I would suggest seeing Crown City Rockers (a live hip-hop from Cali, used to be known as Mission:), since their live show is off the hook.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Johanna, when and where is the BBQ? I'm not getting a wristband or anything so won't be going to anything but day shows (except for at Beerland where I can always get in).

There's a free day show (12-7) at the Longbranch Inn of a lot of my country-punk friends from Dallas. Maybe if enough people are going we can try to do a ILx meet up at some non-venue bar.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

I looked at the schedule yesterday. Man, I wish I could go! I'd see Bedroom Walls, LCD Soundsystem, The Hold Steady, Decibully....

Maria D. (Maria D.), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Speaking of Aussie music at SXSW, I heard that Cut Copy, Wolfmother and Bumblebeez will be there too!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

Yup, that's the show I was going to try to catch on Friday. I was bummed that they cancelled at CMJ.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Aussie BBQ is Friday 18th March at Brush Square Park (between the Hilton and Convention Centre) from 12 - 7pm.

You don't need official wristbands etc but you gotta RSVP (check website www.australianmusiccollective.com) to get in...

Come say hi to me!!

Johanna (Johanna), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

I think Metal Urbain will be there.

I wish someone would stick them on at one of our (numerous) left-field music fests up here in Scotland.

C'mon, yer original 70's synth-punk pioneers? Just across the channel? Beaucoup noise! Optimo? Anyone?

Soukesian, Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

Any more good parties to go to?

Johanna (Johanna), Friday, 4 March 2005 03:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm there

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Friday, 4 March 2005 04:09 (twenty years ago)

you're coming to SXSW matos?? yay! I'm so excited to meet you!!

Seriously, if anyone thinks they might have a spare moment, mail me some contact info and I'll try to organize a meet-up.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 4 March 2005 06:19 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, I don't think I could live with myself if I missed out on a PRIME OPPORTUNITY FOR A CENTRAL[-ISH] TX FAP. I mean, I probably couldn't do the SXSW thing (which is totally unfortunate because I hear all sorts of cool bands are going to be there), but, damn, if a sizeable bunch of ILXors were just ~ 90 miles away from me WHICH I COULD TOTALLY DRIVE IF I WANTED TO (hell, I drive that amount over the course of three average days in my life) and I wasn't able to be there... man.

I'll have to see what my schedule's going to be like first, though.

Surreal Addiction (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 4 March 2005 06:24 (twenty years ago)

(I would absolutely be able to do at the very bare minimum least a phone call to you lot, though, if my schedule prohibits me from making the journey.)

Surreal Addiction (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 4 March 2005 06:25 (twenty years ago)

I don't know what you mean by "do SXSW" but trust me Dee even a wristband doesn't guarantee you'll see all the official showcases you want to.

Which is fine.. .the best SXSW moments are the unofficial ones. Even if you only have a day to spare bumming around at free days shows and BBQs, it's pretty good times.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 4 March 2005 06:30 (twenty years ago)

Miss Misery, check yr email

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Saturday, 12 March 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

If I had a dollar for every 1" button I saw in the Austin airport this evening, I'd have many dollars. I hear it is cold for Austin, but there's a foot of snow on the ground at home; this might as well be summertime.

Friday afternoon I'm either going to be at the Merge/Barsuk party or the Hold Steady show at Emo's, but free beer and BBQ is tempting!

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Wednesday, 16 March 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

why did i think cut copy was last night? it's tonight & i can't go. i ran into united state of electronica night. they were lovely chaps. i'm gonna try to see them at their party today at 5 pm. (is matos going?) but first my band is playing a party at 3:30 pm. at momo's. i'm excited. still in a bit of a daze from having driven almost 24 hours straight (with others, of course).

jaymc in texas, Saturday, 19 March 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Matos is going.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 19 March 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

couldn't make it, had to leave town :(

hopefully will do this whole thing better next year!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 21 March 2005 04:14 (twenty years ago)

i'm home now. sorry didn't hook up again with you Matos.

SXSW is overrated and I hate it. Why did I forget this?

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Monday, 21 March 2005 06:24 (twenty years ago)

me too Miss Misery--but it was nice to meet you finally!

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 21 March 2005 06:54 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
Is anyone coming down this year for Interactive? I am going but alone. :( It would be nice to have a lunch buddy.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

You're going to go, Sam? I may catch a couple music showcases, but interactive will be enjoyed from afar.

patita, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

I might do a couple of shows but the music part burns me out quick.

looks like my coworker is going too so I guess I'll have someone to lunch with.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

for the first time in forever i never even considered going this year. it just never crossed my mind but i kind of wish i could go down if only to see this:

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

I love how half of that first showcase is special guests.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

they can't "officially" announce they're playing it yet.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

but i would wager a paycheck i know who the memphis and atlanta bands are and i'd be 75% sure of the brooklyn one. and i'm 9000% sure of the tucson band in the saturday show because there's only 3 bands worth seeing in tucson anyway.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

well isn't that special. ;)

I seriously think I'm done with the music part. watching the spits behind a porn store off I35 last year and having to pee in the bushes just did me in.

I'm going to try and catch a couple of hip hop acts my brother works with (and free Public Enemy!) then call it a day.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

i got that list from sherry so you know it will be good!

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

ah yes, I remember commenting on your picture with Sherry from a long gone WDYLL thread! I actually just checked her myspace for the beerland day shows. Didn't see anything I was too excited about other than local acts I can see other times.

I wish the music bit coincided with the interactive portion some so I could take advantage of being off work and already downtown. that would greatly increase my enthusiasm. boo.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

Every year this event changes my life in a million different ways.

Dr Morbius,, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

is max the guy who books at beerland? there was another dude from austin who stayed with me for a couple of days and the two of us had a lot of fun while sherry was off shoe shopping.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

Max works there, so yes probably. When I've booked shows there I just went through Randall or Donya but that's been awhile. I'm sure they delegate now.

I'm pretty out of touch with that crowd these days. My boyfriend does punkrockvideos dot com and we met years ago running around with that whole beer-punk/Emo's-now-Beerland scene. But now we've bought a house and have new priorites. I think we barely go out for shows once every three or four months.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

dang. i'll be going to shows forever, or at least until one of the major organs gives out.

chicago kevin, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

nine months pass...

is this something that your normal person can attend, or do you have to be a music journo?? i have to use a week of vacation by march 31 and thought going to sxsw might be cool.

homosexual II, Monday, 17 December 2007 21:08 (seventeen years ago)

open to the public. i'd recommend it but it has its annoyances, e.g. music journos.

wanko ergo sum, Monday, 17 December 2007 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

You can buy badges for a few hundred dollars or wristbands for about a hundred. Or you can pay a cover to see bands individually, which is possible as long as you're not trying to see any buzz bands.

Also, labels, clubs, booking agencies, Starbucks, magazines, etc., have free parties every day, sometimes with beer and BBQ. Those can be casual and fun.

So, yeah, it can be a cheap vacation if you just do the free events (which are cataloged extensively online, and those have been some the best shows I've seen anywhere. Plus, it's springtime and beautiful in Austin, so go.

Eazy, Monday, 17 December 2007 21:15 (seventeen years ago)

if you're taking the trouble to go down there and want to see a bunch of shows and are not super broke, I'd spring for the wristband

dmr, Monday, 17 December 2007 21:18 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i am not broke, i make a decent amount of money and really havent gone anywhere in a few years.. plus might drive there which would save loads of cash. and have a friend in austin to stay with.

homosexual II, Monday, 17 December 2007 21:19 (seventeen years ago)

THE FRIEND IS BIG HOOS THE STEAMDRIVER

homosexual II, Monday, 17 December 2007 21:19 (seventeen years ago)

Last time I was there, Ann Richards gave the opening address.

But I tell ya, The Buckpets rocked.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 17 December 2007 21:23 (seventeen years ago)

wanko ergo sum, Monday, 17 December 2007 21:24 (seventeen years ago)

Last time I was there, Ann Richards gave the opening address.

Wait, you WENT to Texas, on purpose?

Rock Hardy, Monday, 17 December 2007 21:26 (seventeen years ago)

My favorite unofficial shows have been here.

Eazy, Monday, 17 December 2007 21:28 (seventeen years ago)

if only i could convince one of my friends to go with me... so i dont have to stand around like a creep alone the whole time

homosexual II, Monday, 17 December 2007 21:31 (seventeen years ago)

Wait, you WENT to Texas, on purpose?

Oh, c'mon. Austin's like the West Berlin of Tejas.

to fly across the city and find Aerosmith's car (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 2 March 2017 21:39 (eight years ago)

Merely a stopgap until they can get a law passed banning any live performance of music in March not sanctioned by SXSW.

well, everyone should and will boycott sxsw now. good riddance

flopson, Thursday, 2 March 2017 22:13 (eight years ago)

Swenson also says: “It’s intended for someone who does something really egregious like disobeying our rules for pyrotechnics, starts a brawl in a club, or kills somebody. You have to really fuck up for us to do this stuff.” He continues:

What people don’t understand is that we’re already talking to immigration about all these bands. Most of these bands are here because we sort of sponsored them. So if somebody did something bad enough that we had to enforce this part of the contract, we would probably be obliged to notify immigration that ‘Hey these guys are trouble,’ but we’ve never had to do that.

He adds that the festival does not threaten international artists with deportation over playing unofficial shows: “Some of this about playing shows other than their showcase, which, if they come in on the kind of visa that most of them get – they’re not supposed to do that. All this stuff in there about getting deported and immigration – that’s just us telling them this could happen if you’re doing this other stuff. It’s not us saying we’re going to try and have you deported, it’s us warning them that if they violated the terms of the visa that got them here, that’s what could happen.”

Number None, Thursday, 2 March 2017 23:15 (eight years ago)

seems about as impossible to boycott as it would be to police. aren't there way more unofficial shows than official? what would you boycott -- just official shows? the unofficial ones too? the entire city of Austin?

read some more stuff about this and it seems it might be a lil more complicated than i thought. reverted to giving them BoD until i make up my mind

flopson, Friday, 3 March 2017 17:28 (eight years ago)

they're definitely using the specter of deportation to keep their international artists in line, which is pretty garbage. it doesn't feel like a heads-up, the way it's written.

nomar, Friday, 3 March 2017 17:39 (eight years ago)

my impression is that the most egregious stuff is legacy verbiage. it's language that never should have been in there in the first place, but accusations of "collaborationism" just because the cultural context of the language has changed seems like stretching it.

now that it's been brought to their attention, of course, they absolutely better run the language past the lawyers and redo it to not be awful.

flopson, Friday, 3 March 2017 18:14 (eight years ago)

their response was very bad i thought

marcos, Friday, 3 March 2017 19:26 (eight years ago)

yeah that was about as far from an apology as you can get

sleeve, Friday, 3 March 2017 20:25 (eight years ago)

One of the problematic things about SXSW is that they've been trying to crackdown on "Non-Sanctioned" events for years, going so far as to report certain get-togethers to the police (there's a Austin Chronicle editorial by SXSW co-founder Louis Black that I read at the time but now can't find where he defends this by saying it's less about 'protecting the brand' and more about public safety, but still...), and now they are seizing something that's more NAGL than ever to carry this out.

I believe this was written by ILX poster fact checking cuz, via yetimike:

sleeve, Friday, 3 March 2017 21:00 (eight years ago)

this is what they should do / should have done

Could the inclusion of this language in the contract just be a way for SXSW to avoid liability?

If that was the concern, they could just as easily include a more straightforward clause where performers agree to abide by all federal, state, and local laws.
