I definitely won't be around on Wednesday or Thursday, but if I get in before Friday night, I'd like to see Cut Copy. (Speaking of Aussie bands.)

There's a free day show (12-7) at the Longbranch Inn of a lot of my country-punk friends from Dallas. Maybe if enough people are going we can try to do a ILx meet up at some non-venue bar.

Which is fine.. .the best SXSW moments are the unofficial ones. Even if you only have a day to spare bumming around at free days shows and BBQs, it's pretty good times.

is this something that your normal person can attend, or do you have to be a music journo?? i have to use a week of vacation by march 31 and thought going to sxsw might be cool.
― homosexual II, Monday, 17 December 2007 21:08 (seventeen years ago)
open to the public. i'd recommend it but it has its annoyances, e.g. music journos.
― wanko ergo sum, Monday, 17 December 2007 21:09 (seventeen years ago)
You can buy badges for a few hundred dollars or wristbands for about a hundred. Or you can pay a cover to see bands individually, which is possible as long as you're not trying to see any buzz bands.
Also, labels, clubs, booking agencies, Starbucks, magazines, etc., have free parties every day, sometimes with beer and BBQ. Those can be casual and fun.
So, yeah, it can be a cheap vacation if you just do the free events (which are cataloged extensively online, and those have been some the best shows I've seen anywhere. Plus, it's springtime and beautiful in Austin, so go.
― Eazy, Monday, 17 December 2007 21:15 (seventeen years ago)
if you're taking the trouble to go down there and want to see a bunch of shows and are not super broke, I'd spring for the wristband
― dmr, Monday, 17 December 2007 21:18 (seventeen years ago)
yeah i am not broke, i make a decent amount of money and really havent gone anywhere in a few years.. plus might drive there which would save loads of cash. and have a friend in austin to stay with.

Merely a stopgap until they can get a law passed banning any live performance of music in March not sanctioned by SXSW.

Swenson also says: “It’s intended for someone who does something really egregious like disobeying our rules for pyrotechnics, starts a brawl in a club, or kills somebody. You have to really fuck up for us to do this stuff.” He continues:What people don’t understand is that we’re already talking to immigration about all these bands. Most of these bands are here because we sort of sponsored them. So if somebody did something bad enough that we had to enforce this part of the contract, we would probably be obliged to notify immigration that ‘Hey these guys are trouble,’ but we’ve never had to do that.He adds that the festival does not threaten international artists with deportation over playing unofficial shows: “Some of this about playing shows other than their showcase, which, if they come in on the kind of visa that most of them get – they’re not supposed to do that. All this stuff in there about getting deported and immigration – that’s just us telling them this could happen if you’re doing this other stuff. It’s not us saying we’re going to try and have you deported, it’s us warning them that if they violated the terms of the visa that got them here, that’s what could happen.”

seems about as impossible to boycott as it would be to police. aren't there way more unofficial shows than official? what would you boycott -- just official shows? the unofficial ones too? the entire city of Austin?

read some more stuff about this and it seems it might be a lil more complicated than i thought. reverted to giving them BoD until i make up my mind
― flopson, Friday, 3 March 2017 17:28 (eight years ago)
they're definitely using the specter of deportation to keep their international artists in line, which is pretty garbage. it doesn't feel like a heads-up, the way it's written.
― nomar, Friday, 3 March 2017 17:39 (eight years ago)
my impression is that the most egregious stuff is legacy verbiage. it's language that never should have been in there in the first place, but accusations of "collaborationism" just because the cultural context of the language has changed seems like stretching it.
now that it's been brought to their attention, of course, they absolutely better run the language past the lawyers and redo it to not be awful.

― call all destroyer, Friday, 3 March 2017 18:07 (eight years ago)
yeah I think the inhuman shittiness of US immigration (and precarity of musicians on VISAs) is the real Devil, but they definitely need to re-write that monstrous text and apologize ASAP
― flopson, Friday, 3 March 2017 18:14 (eight years ago)
their response was very bad i thought
― marcos, Friday, 3 March 2017 19:26 (eight years ago)
yeah that was about as far from an apology as you can get
― sleeve, Friday, 3 March 2017 20:25 (eight years ago)
One of the problematic things about SXSW is that they've been trying to crackdown on "Non-Sanctioned" events for years, going so far as to report certain get-togethers to the police (there's a Austin Chronicle editorial by SXSW co-founder Louis Black that I read at the time but now can't find where he defends this by saying it's less about 'protecting the brand' and more about public safety, but still...), and now they are seizing something that's more NAGL than ever to carry this out.

― sleeve, Friday, 3 March 2017 21:00 (eight years ago)
this is what they should do / should have done
Could the inclusion of this language in the contract just be a way for SXSW to avoid liability? If that was the concern, they could just as easily include a more straightforward clause where performers agree to abide by all federal, state, and local laws.
