Salt on Fruit

Sea salt is the best.

Not just watermelon, either, but it's nice on fruit salad.

I buy mangos sometimes in the "latin quarter" of Oakland (Fruitvale) and they put salt, chili-powder, and lime juice in the ziplock bag and then shake'n'bake it. Very zesty.

Salt on fruit is tops.

Magoes take all kinds of spices. You can damn near make a mango taste like meat.

Mango only pawn... in game of life.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 3 March 2005 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Jackfruit/durian falls into this category. The Hare Krishnas call it the meat of the trees.

I had a fruit salad STARTER at a Thai restaurant the other day. It was spicy melon, starfruit, etc.

apples, lemons, limes, yum.

I used to argue with an ex about what to put on grapefruit, salt or sugar. I favored sugar.

Durian fruit is the dogshit of the trees.

I've had that salt and chili powder mango thing (I've never had it baked though, are you kidding?) It's great.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 March 2005 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

No, it wasn't baked, but they shook it up in the plastic bag like the old 70's Shake'n'Bake thing, that's all I was referring to.

Also, cucumbers are great with the salt + chili + lime combo.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a special salt for fruit i've seen in asian markets. i tried to google it but was unsuccessful.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

One thing though: the mango they sell on the street is often pretty unripe, I think they prefer it that way. I like them when they're so soft they fall off the skin...

I went out with a Hawaiian girl for awhile, and she had this dish where she would marinate ripe strips of mango in soy sauce, in the fridge. It was pretty kick-axe, as the rockers say.

Kids here love mexican candies which are almost all hot. They take those Lucas salts (limon-lime and chile) and pour them into their hands to lick. They also like corn, mango and watermelon lollipops that are then dipped in chili powder.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

don't forget saladitos!

I dunno about salt on fruit. But pepper on pineapple=yum

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Pepper on cantaloupe is delicious with a splash of balsamic vinegar.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 3 March 2005 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

durian fruit, gag, ick! it's banned from a lot of hotels in thailand because of the stink. i was told it is delicious if you can make it past the smell, which i cannot.

ai lien (kold_krush), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I've ever deliberately put condiments on fruit (unless you count salt on tomatoes).

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Saladitos are the bomb. I like the more moist kind compared to the ultra-dried up ones. They also make a chili saladito which is BRUTAL, and I've seen licorice ones too.

On mango related confections, has anyone tried those long chili mango sticks that look like a shish-kabob and have weird big inedible SEEDS in them?... strange but good.

andy --, Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

salt on cantaloupe is u&k

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Black pepper on strawberries is a good combo.

I can't eat tomatoes without a sprinkling salt.

C J (C J), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

An oldtimers' way to eat apples around here is to pour out a little pile of salt, peel the apple and dip the wedges into the salt pile. I do that myself occasionally (best with Granny Smiths). Salt on tomatoes is great, but my family gives me hell because I also grind a little fresh black pepper on them.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

A bare sprinkle of salt followed by a heftier dose of sugar on grapefruit. Yum. And absolutely salt on tomatoes, but no pepper. Salt on cantaloupes and watermelons. Pepper, maybe, on cantaloupes.

Dang. Now I'm hungry for melon. ::sigh::

Hey Jude, Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I skip salt and go straight for the PROSCIUTTO!

I agree, these are ace. You can get them at most Mexican groceries, and sometimes as regular ol' stores with "international" sections.

sugarpants (sugarpants), Friday, 4 March 2005 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to love saladitos. Growing up in Southern CA I used to eat them constantly. My taste buds have gradually wussed out on me now, so that if I put one in my mouth I shiver involuntarily.

Salt is good on fresh lemons and tomatoes though.

I hardly ever eat fruit. I am going to die.
