Bitching about ties

I hate wearing ties. By extension, I hate the entire concept of "business casual" clothing. To me, there's nothing at all casual about wearing a tie. I hate them for the same reason I hate turtlenecks: too much constraint in the throatal area. All this being said, I remembered how to tie a Four in Hand knot on only the 3rd try this morning. Got the dimple and everything. Slick. Still, I can't bring myself to button the collar of my shirt.

I also hate getting small, bright, anonymous stains on white shirts. This one is orange and I'm pretty sure was caused by the pasta sauce on the free lunch I scrapped today. Maybe it's not as anonymous as I thought.

Upon further consideration: fuck stuck-up office dress codes. I'd be such a happier worker if I could just wear jeans and a tshirt.

"Business casual" /= ties

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

I know, that's what I've always thought. But then the HR dude showed up and said I had to, after three days of non-tie wearing. He also called me "sport" which I think angers me more than the actual tie-wearing.

Dan M. (OutDatWay), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

kick his teeth in. he doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

and call him "chum" as you crush his skull

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Calling people sport is less business like than not wearing a tie, IMHO. I like wearing ties. They're ornamental and they help keep me warm. It's important to get a shirt whose collar fits.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

Ties should never be optional.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Aaron A., Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

anyway casual is good, very smart is also good, in between rarely is.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

Agreed.

I love ties. We've been through this before. I love wearing them. And boys that wear them. Especially defiant ties as a way of expressing individuality in a grey pidgeon suited world.

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Friday, 4 March 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

As some of you know, I'm all about ties and gentleman's wear. However, many people I see wearing ties in clubs and bars and on the street (principally indei boyz and "fashionistas") have the lamest taste in 'em ever, as if wearing them without a suit will do. Hosers.

BARMS, Friday, 4 March 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Anything with Snoopy/Spongebob and/or "designed" by Jerry Garcia is a punchable offense.

sugarpants (sugarpants), Friday, 4 March 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

I like them! Most things that are business casual, like khakis, I dislike. Also I was unaware that anyone at all in the real world ever called anyone "sport".

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Friday, 4 March 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

I really like Liberty print ties. For men who are secure in their sexuality.

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Friday, 4 March 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

i disagree, my faovurite look is a v neck jumper, tie and cords with some plimsolls or something. but im not an indie boy or a fashionista. i just like ties. and v neck jumpers.

wearing ties with a blazer and no v neck, now thats something i dont like.

re: liberty ties. not a liberty print, but liberty did a few years ago a lovely tie with a peacock feather print running along the length. it was really nice, but they sold out by the time i scraped toegther 10000000 million pounds to buy it.

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 4 March 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Sexual security is the last reason to wear ties, no matter how decent.

My workmate and I were discussing 'em this morning after I had to remove my roxxor boxing kangaroos one 'cause I feel crap today and I aam adamant now, as I was then, that Simpsons-themed ties look like someone took a rather liberal technicolour yawn all over your tie before selling it to you. Theme and cartoon ties are for those who deserve to sleep with the chick from Wicked City.

Am, I like and rock the v-neck and tie look too, but I am railing against the lasck of effort normally associated with it. I don't do cords and I've become exceedingly efficient at not resorting to trainers to make it look "casual".

BARMS, Friday, 4 March 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

i fucking love to wear ties and suits...if i had to wear them everyday it would be a different story. But tell me you don't feel like a p-i-m-p when you get sharped up?

Chris 'The Nuts' V (Chris V), Friday, 4 March 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

I love the suit. I should be getting 2 in from Ghana tomorrow and I even went in for a waistcoat and 3/4 length coat on one of them. Bet the cut of the trousers will suck tho.

BARMS, Friday, 4 March 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

Best recent fashion statement - my neighbours' Japanese lodger wearing a white shirt with the top button undone and a chocolate brown Ralph Lauren wool tie done up on his neck so it sat directly above his shirt collar.

BARMS, Friday, 4 March 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

I agree with ambrose. the talented mr. ripley look haha

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 4 March 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

I love ties. Love wearing them, love picking out a particular one to match my mood and plan for the day, love the variety and utter frivolousness of them (that is, they are pure adornment and serve little practical purpose).

As for business casual: to some people "business casual" means "anything less than a suit." But to me "business casual" includes the following range (in descending order of formality):

• Dress clothes (suit or separate) without a tie
• Jacket and nice pants with a buttoning sport shirt
• Jacket and nice pants with a polo shirt
• Nice pants with a buttoning sport shirt
• Nice pants with a polo shirt
• Nice pants with a nice sweater

I think it's worth making a distinction between a suit and a look I'll call "nice separates." By this I mean dress pants, dress shirt, tie, and a jacket (aka blazer, aka sportcoat). It differs from a suit only in that the pants and jacket aren't made of the same fabric.

Vest-and-tie may be substituted for jacket-and-tie if you are mildly daring.

Note: I include cotton chino-ish pants (Gap khakis, Dockers) in the "nice pants" category, mostly because few people notice or care about the difference between such pants and actual formal dress pants (such as accompany a suit).

T-shirts and jeans (of any color) are not in my definition of business casual. Some people can pull off a tweed jacket plus jeans--what I call the Grad Student Look. I'd only attempt that on a Friday.

There are people who can get away with wearing a nice (non-cotton) t-shirt with an otherwise businessy outfit. Attempt only if the industry is IT or creative.

Just when I had forgotten about my distaste for ties (yes, I am wearing one again today,) I found this. Leave it to academia...

Dan M. (OutDatWay), Friday, 4 March 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

I always almost wear a tie and then take it off at the last minute cuz really, what excuse do I have to wear a tie? Only to social events, and I'd hate to show up at the bar and have everyone thinking I dressed up just to see them. I think I need to move again, so I can make a tie-wearing first impression -- and then wear them, now and then, as a matter of course, instead of getting people coming up and saying, hey, you're wearing a tie today, what's up with that.

nabiscothingy, Friday, 4 March 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

If I were a man, I'd dress mod all the time.
