why tv news must be KILLED!!!!

We have CNN on in the office, and for FIVE HOURS tonight, they staked out some godforsaken two-lane patch of asphalt in West Virginia in anticipation of Martha fucking Stewart being released from prison after her epic weeks of internment. FIVE HOURS! On a day when, like, people got killed in Iraq, Bush made pronouncements about Iran, Greenspan testified to Congress, the Kansas attorney general continued his effort to get abortion records for possible criminal prosecutions of doctors, etc. etc. etc., but no, our supposedly "better" cable news network spends FIVE HOURS filming a bumfuck country road while bobbly heads in the studio talk about what Martha fucking Stewart needs to do to "move forward" from all this. Rarrrrrrrgh. And THEN, after the fucking car drives down the stupid little road -- look, OMG, it's a CAR! -- we cut to a static shot of the EMPTY FUCKING TARMAC at Greenbrier Valley Airport while we breathlessly await the arrival of the CAR that will bring Martha to the PLANE. For 20 minutes or more, a whole TV screen full of EMPTY FUCKING TARMAC, with a little inset bobbly head lady in the corner talking on and on and ON AND ON about Martha this and Martha that and learning humility and coming out stronger than before and howwillpeoplereacttoher andomgwhatabouthertvdealsandmagazines andandandOMYGODWILLYOUPLEASEPLEASEPLEASESHUTTHEFUCKUP!!!!

Oh, and one of the people opining on all this was Henry fucking Blodgett, tech-bubble stock pimp extraordinaire, maybe there because he could sympathize with Martha's plight -- you know, being exposed as a shameless greedhead in front of the whole fucking world. Can we stage a Battle Royale or something with all of these people?

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 4 March 2005 07:32 (twenty-one years ago)

did they not talk about anything else at all during those five hours??

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Friday, 4 March 2005 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Welcome to my world.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 4 March 2005 07:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i sit under a foot away from TWO televisions, one tuned to CNN, the other to MSNBC, and they both have been Martha crazy all fucking night. WHO. GIVES. A. FUCK?

If you do care, go drink sulfuric acid.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 4 March 2005 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW, this is what Yahoo news has deemed important at this hour!

• Martha Stewart is freed from prison
• Bombs kill six Iraqi policemen, wound 15
• Fossett breaks nonstop solo flight record
• Sister of Jackson's accuser testifies
• Program helps reduce teens' risky driving
• No evidence that echinacea treats colds
• Latest Travolta film makes hybrid cars 'cool'

A rich sociopath is freed after a rough few months from a white-collar prison, a rich jerk buys another world record, and a film company tries to rearrange chairs on the deck of a closeted A-lister's shitty career (buys publicity) by implying his terrible sequel to a ten-years-past film is environmentally conscientious and therefore newsworthy!

Fuck this country!

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Friday, 4 March 2005 07:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course the problem is not "tv news" but "24hr tv news".
Or worse, more than one 24hr tv news netwerks "competing".

peepee (peepee), Friday, 4 March 2005 07:58 (twenty-one years ago)

holy fuck, Henry Blodgett! I haven't heard *that* name in about 4 years...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 4 March 2005 08:00 (twenty-one years ago)

This may be part of his rehabilitation. Garrrrrrrr!

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 4 March 2005 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

TV crews waiting for hours in anticipation of Mandela's release: entirely right and proper.
TV crews waiting for hours in anticipation of Martha Stewart's release: wrongest thing since Wilson Philips.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 4 March 2005 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, apart from when I'm in office (when we usually at least have the volume down, thank god) I really don't watch much TV news of any kind. And things like this make me realize that if I did, I would feel a LOT fucking worse about this country on a day to day basis.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 4 March 2005 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

wrongest thing since Wilson Philips.

Bahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 4 March 2005 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

On a day when, like, people got killed in Iraq, Bush made pronouncements about Iran, Greenspan testified to Congress, the Kansas attorney general continued his effort to get abortion records for possible criminal prosecutions of doctors, etc. etc. etc.,

Oh and things that didn't involve the U.S. at all happened too, how dare they?

Paul Kelly (kelly), Friday, 4 March 2005 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, this is American CNN. I'm impressed when they can tell me the weather in Poughkeepsie. Don't ask them to find Belgium or something.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 4 March 2005 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

(I'm actually kind of impressed they found West Virginia.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 4 March 2005 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

But it should cover world events too shouldn't it?
I never watch any TV news now, I just read a few papers on the net. When I get the chance to watch 24 hour news channels they are repetitive and dull, the BBC i'd include in this too. Do we need 24 hour news?

Paul Kelly (kelly), Friday, 4 March 2005 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

FYI, the Martha-fest is still in full swing. CNN is showing the same People Magazine bio of her they showed last night. And apparently she walked a dog today, and visited her horses. More updates tk.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Saturday, 5 March 2005 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

IT'S STILL GOING!!!!!

Seriously, WHY THE FUCK DO PEOPLE CARE? I mean, honestly. Even if you're a fan. Why are they still talking about it? What do they expect her to do? Rob a convenience store?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 5 March 2005 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Marketplace on public radio was making fun of it today. They kept interrupting the broadcast with updates: "We have unconfirmed reports that Martha Stewart has been served a latte by her assistant."

sigh.....

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Saturday, 5 March 2005 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, yeah, I heard that -- good stuff.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 5 March 2005 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

There are callers calling into Larry King Live right now, expressing deep concern over Martha's probation officer, and whether or not he'll be prejudiced against her. People suck.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 5 March 2005 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

You had to like the "sell the news" move in her shitty stock today. Man is that thing ever a mega squeeze.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 5 March 2005 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

what does MSNBC stand for?

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 5 March 2005 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, on MSNBC right now, fuckin' Scarborough is discussing how the "Secular Hollywood Elite" are trying to stamp out faith (and if that's true, I'm fuckin' all for it).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 5 March 2005 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

you don't know?

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 5 March 2005 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

martha stewart news broadcasted continuously huh huh huh

Aaron A., Saturday, 5 March 2005 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Scarborough is discussing how the "Secular Hollywood Elite" are trying to stamp out faith

Well, the failure of "Harold and Kumar" to get even ONE lousy Oscar has shaken my belief in the beneficence of the Creator.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Saturday, 5 March 2005 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

tonight CBS leads w/ Giffords' rehab, NBC and ABC w/ winter cold. So at 6:31, it's back to world music on WFMU.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 22 January 2011 23:34 (fifteen years ago)

Morbs, just accept it that Gifffords' recovery, such as it is, now qualifies as (oh, the irony) the "feel good story of 2011" so far.

If, like Reagan after he was shot, she appeared at a hospital window and waved at and smiled to reporters, no other news could squeeze itself into the tiny interstices between the non-stop looping of that video, accompanied by overly coiffed news readers effusing for several days at the miracle.

This is just how it is.

Aimless, Sunday, 23 January 2011 01:33 (fifteen years ago)

one year passes...

I don't agree with the thread title, but it's relevant.

When some meth head Deliverance dude says "I bet I can do this!", you might want to back up a few steps.

(Of course, that news team being from Memphis, they likely could have returned fire.)
