Did your parents used to drink hard liquor and smoke in restaurants?

Black Angus Steakhouse when I was seven years old:

The restaurant was dark and the leather smooth. Both my parents would order a highball before dinner, and usually one after dinner, and have a smoke at the table! Now I know that still happens every night in Nevada, but in California, that world is pretty much over.

I would have this extensive family gatherings at restaurants just like that, and I had/have relatives I remember as always smoking and as always being really old, even when they were probably just in their thirties or forties when I was younger. Most of them were cousins of my parents, and they all smoked like chimneys. Many of them died of lung cancer too soon. And they all drank hard liquor.

No smoking, plenty of boozing and a little wine for the kids too if appropriate.

andy --, Friday, 4 March 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think there are legal limits on where jews can go in this country.

As white trash, I can say that I am definitely on this side of the "Black Angus Steakhouse" cultural divide. And yes, there was whiskey and cigarettes consumed with the meat. Still is.

I used to think "Crump" was Welsh for "a Pall Mall and two fingers of Canadian Club."

When I was kid, I was so into the Camel "Where A Man Belongs" campaign that I collected them in a scrapbook (my uncle gave me the idea). But if Camel thought they were creating a future customer, boy were they wrong. I smoke, but I DON'T SMAOKE CAMELS! Ha!

'used to'?

luna (luna.c), Friday, 4 March 2005 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Luna OTM. The last time I was out with my folks my Dad had I think 3 or 4 glasses of Jim Beam on the rocks. That may have been to soothe his nerves since he hates driving in the city.

Neither one smokes though, at least not for 20+ years.

Everytime I think of places like this, I think of Lileks' Gobbler site.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 4 March 2005 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

My Mom and stepfather are primarly wine and beer drinkers, with the occcasional foray into the sweet liqeurs on my Mom's end (Grand Marnier, Amaretto) which I used to steal from the liquor cabinet when I was a teenage girldrinkdrunk. My stepfather used to smoke cigarettes and quit. My Dad is totally straight edge.

Sara Sherr, Friday, 4 March 2005 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost Holy my god. Somehow I missed that part of Lilek's site. (The now removed section abut bad meat once nearly made me wet myself, tho.)

Behold these works, ye mortals, and despair!

The depressing photographs make up for the right-wing screeds.
