Paris: Where to Stay?

My wife and I are going to Paris for a few days in April. We normally would stay in a friend's apt in the 7th which we love love love but it is occupado-- so we're resorting to a hotel and probably in a more bustling area. Anyone have fairly inexpensive hotel suggestions in Paris? The arrondisements closest to the Seine are naturally appealing, 1-9, I suppose.

Thanks for any ideas.

Rue des mauvais garçons

Best plan is to show up at any station and ask there, and they will sort you out a cheap hotel on the spot. It really works.

We stayed at this place a couple of years ago, and it's fairly comfortable and reasonably priced. Not posh but homely, in a nice quiet residential area with a great street market underneath the raised metro railbed. Quite close to the river and Eiffel Tower.

why not the Paris Hilton? They serve good club sandwiches

I was very pleased with the 2* Hotel Chopin on the Passage Jouffroy. Little, cosy, a bit old-fashioned and very friendly indeed, down a very cute little arcade off the Boulevard Haussman. And not too expensive.

i found a lot of good deals here http://www.bookings.org/

i remember seeing a hotel by the Parthenon in the 6th that looked cute and affordable.

when I go (for the first time since being very small), I want to stay (I think) on Rue Jacob in St. Germain-des-Pres

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Blvd Saint-Michel near the Seine on the left bank is tourist hell and you can't get a decent meal to save your life in that part of town, I would advise not to stay there. Seriously, you simply cannot find a good sandwich there unless you walk all the way over to the rue Mouffetard. Left bank off Blvd Saint-Germain is better but many of the posh boutiques are in this area and everything is very expensive.

I always tell people to go near the Canal Saint-Martin in the lower part of the 10e, or right around Place de la Republique (great location near the crossing of several Metro lines!), there is a fabulous internet cafe called Web Bar just off it (3e arrondissement, 32 rue de la Picardie). I know there's a small hotel right next to the Web Bar there, but I can't recall the name! Also, the Marais is lovely, also posh and expensive but in a different way (more gay, less bourgeois-rich-expat-American) than Saint-Germain, and the Centre Pompidou is very close.

the Ile St-Louis is ideal, yes?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 02:54 (twenty years ago)

I liked the area around the Gare du Nord. (Maybe slightly west of it.)

youn, Wednesday, 8 March 2006 11:58 (twenty years ago)

what's nice about that area? i want to be in the center of things.

let's try teuristo again - the Marais just off the Rue de Rivoli near Hotel de Ville is ideal, yes?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 16:45 (twenty years ago)

That's where I almost lived when I was there!

I think it is pretty good - my school was close to there, also good food.

Adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 17:37 (twenty years ago)

I'm thinking of moving back!

Adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 17:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeh, if you can afford it, the Marais is gorgeous and central-ish enough and full of interesting stuff.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

What are good places for vegetarians to eat in Paris?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 17:52 (twenty years ago)

american restaurants?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 17:56 (twenty years ago)

my favorite cafe in the marais - http://www.frankenstein.com/cpf.php?page_id=loir_dans

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 17:56 (twenty years ago)

and a good bar - http://marais.evous.fr/annuaire/cafe/LaPerle/laperle.htm

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 17:59 (twenty years ago)

clarification: good eats for vegetarians who eat seafood

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 18:03 (twenty years ago)

aha, "no-face-atarianism" ... you can order fish at almost any restaurant, so you ought to be alright.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 18:07 (twenty years ago)

that page about "le loir dans la théière" gets it just a bit wrong.. a loir is a dormouse

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 18:09 (twenty years ago)

Thanks. So does anyone share the opinion (?) that Ile St-Louis is not a good idea?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 20:24 (twenty years ago)

I don't see what's wrong with it.

Adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 20:26 (twenty years ago)

Marais is better though.

I'm so jealous of you, and I don't mean that in a nice way.

Adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 20:26 (twenty years ago)

let's try teuristo again - the Marais just off the Rue de Rivoli near Hotel de Ville is ideal, yes?

i lived on rue de rosiers in the marais - on that corner where the jew bombing was. a few blocks north of rue de rivoli / metro st paul. it was really nice! really really nice! easy access to gay bars too, if you're into that.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 20:29 (twenty years ago)

you love Jews!

Adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 20:34 (twenty years ago)

yes, i was hoping being at the crossroads of gay paris and jewish paris, i'd find a mashup of gay jews, but i only saw hasids and leather daddies - not much in between. pretty good felafel though

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 20:36 (twenty years ago)

that's always a help.

I'm sure one day you'll find your perfect jew. I'll keep my eyes peeled for you.

Adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 20:38 (twenty years ago)

I'll get the word around. you know, we talk.

Adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 20:38 (twenty years ago)

tell them all about me. thanks

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 20:42 (twenty years ago)

i dunno, the ile st-louis is kind of sleepy and, i think, expensive to stay in (i might be wrong about that). i mean, it's beautiful, and quiet, but there's not a whole lot there.

amateurist0, Wednesday, 8 March 2006 20:47 (twenty years ago)

i mean, hell, if i could LIVE there.... but yeah i'd stay in the marais. gare du nord...not so much. some parts around there are sort of run down.

amateurist0, Wednesday, 8 March 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

but really the parisian ilxors would know way better than me, so i'll shut up.

amateurist0, Wednesday, 8 March 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

I love where my friends G&F live, in the 9th Arr bit of Rue des Martyrs. You walk down through the Bourse etc though it is a bit sleepy. Good for Montmartre. I always like the garment-districty bit of cities.

The best thing to do is rent a flat rather than go for a hotel, there are tons of sites that have pics of the appartements in question.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 20:57 (twenty years ago)

well, yeah, the Ile is sleepy, but the Marais and Bastille are next door, and St Germain isn't very far, no? and if I stay there, I'll pay less than I will in the Marais, which I'm now leaning towards. and also sleepy v noisy - the other places I'm looking at seem to be on top of cafes.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 21:09 (twenty years ago)

I stayed in a hotel one square away from Place Des Vosges. It wasn't exactly palatial, but a good price. I can't remember the name, though!

Adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 21:18 (twenty years ago)

the square with the korean restaurant?

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Hotel de la Place des Vosges?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 21:26 (twenty years ago)

I think so.
Maybe!

Adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 21:29 (twenty years ago)

Stay near the ground floor - some of the cheaper hotels in Paris are fire-traps and they haven't yet invented the fire-escape.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 22:01 (twenty years ago)

what abt the Rue Jacob?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 9 March 2006 01:24 (twenty years ago)

so, Hotel de Ville v. St Germain des Pres v. Ile St Louis. which will be the best to be around at night? which is the most Parisian? which is the most convenient?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 9 March 2006 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Is ILE is sleepy the 2006 Wizard is hungry?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 9 March 2006 17:44 (twenty years ago)

Nothing wrong with Ile Saint Louis as a place to stay. Sure, there's nothing much going on there, but it's pretty and quiet and you're ten minutes' walk from the Marais, the left bank, etc etc.

jz, Thursday, 9 March 2006 17:54 (twenty years ago)

"which is most parisian" = political pandora's box even BEFORE you get into belleville

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 9 March 2006 19:04 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

anyone have up-to-date advice, or enthusiastic reinforcement, of anything above? I'm looking at catching the train over from London and staying Tues-Weds night next week. Very cheap is very good.
