'Essential Thruths and Basic Skills'

The Tory Education policy, teaching 'Essential Thruths and Basic Skills'. This scares me more than teaching creationism as and 'alternative theory'. OK somethings are basically true, 2+2=4; but what about history, literature, science even, surely something are a matter of enquiry and debate or at the very least to be demonstrable by empirical proff, which I don't think is what the tories are getting at.

Conservative education the world over just = someone running "basics" drills and responding to all questions with "never mind about that." Inquiry breeds hedonistic individuality and moral relativism.

I'll use it as a song title.

sounds like how we teach except our "basic skills" are determined on a state level. We have "Essential Knowledge and Skills" and we must teach only those things, in a prescribed order.

At least this means they clearly intend to remove religion completely from schools, so there is some consolation.

That sounds a bit optimistic, Martin. I wouldn't be surprised if "Essential Truths", as far as the Tories are concerned, includes "R. E." classes which are purely about Christianity.

"Essential Truths and Basic Skills" sounds like:

A. A techno full-length that might be quite good but won't live up to the title.
B. A turntablist record that would be no different from any other turntablist record, e.g. exciting or amusing at first but aggressively mediocre after 2-6 listens.
C. A rap album that would be absolutely boring, horrid, and awful in every way.
D. A tongue-in-cheek roman à clef by a "clever" twentysomething who has had no particularly remarkable experiences yet and probably never will.
E. A beginner's guide to the martial arts techniques most likely to help you survive in the aftermath of an apocalyptic catastrophe, presented as a comic book.
