Toffs style footie nostalgia C/D, S/D

Sort of a spin-off from the World Cup draw thread. A couple of months ago I saw a great photo of a Westerveld blunder which had some great details of the crowd behind the goal. The thing I noticed was that maybe 8 out of 10 people were wearing classic round neck Liverpool shirts from the 60s, early 70s. So, is this thing big in England? Personally, I have sworn to never wear an Ajax shirt with the insulting modern version of the logo. Has this thing happened to your team? Is this nostalgia a good thing? And of course feel free to list your favorite retro shirts. I have the early 70s Ajax long sleeve, the St.Etienne 70s shirt and the Borussia Mönchengladbach shirt from ’74.

And maybe as an aside: are footie shirts getting better again? Simple design? Return of the round neck? See for instance the Italian national team, AS Roma, Man U.

The round neck Liverpool shirt is nice, yes, but I still have a soft spot for the late 70s v-neck (as modelled by the young Edna, with robot chum, here: http://www.nodata.org/honey/sinister/minipeople/RoboTrous.html). Mystifyingly, Liverpool seem to have two home shirts this season: one for Europe (a quite nice updating of the v-neck) and one for the Premiership (ghastly collar and white piping affair). I am very much in favour of those lycra numbers by Kappa that Italy (and Wales) sport these days. But, of course, these are fine for whippet-thin Romans, but maybe not so fine for beer belly armchair fans. Hm.

Wearing my Hungary shirt with Puskas #10 on it right now.

When are kit designers going to bring back the lace-up placket? All those centennial shirts coming out of Italy and Spain, and they all look like slightly more minimalist versions of current designs.

My flatmate just came back with a snide copy of the Liverpool Euro kit (4 pounds - Chang Mai) and it is nice, red with white v-neck and yellow badge. The best kit that Toffs do has to be the one worn by Sylvester Stallone in Escape to victory, white with vertical red and blue stripes down one side - lovely.

I've got a couple of the philosophy football t-shirts too, which are quite nice, one Shankly one and one with a quote from Gramsci.

The old Ajax kit is a pearler though, as is the Dukla Prague away kit from, years ago.

I proudly wear my Paolo Rossi 1982 Italy top - well, I do when I've run out of other clothes. Forza azzurri!

"as modelled by the young Edna, with robot chum, here:"

I fear we may be due an entry from the Pinefox, musing on the almost unbearable poignancy of this image. And he'd be right, of course. You seem to be saying: "Do I like robots? I like chunky digital watches, certainly - but is this going too far? What would Steve Heighway do in this situation?".

I used to have a V-neck early-80s St Etienne shirt - but that was in the early 80s.

Yeah, Edna I have last year's AS Roma shirt, which basically is unwearable if you pay too many visits to the pub. ;)

Benjamin, that Puskas shirt. Is it the red one or the white one with the vertical green-with-red band. Both very nice, although I have a slight preference for the white one.

Italy shirts always look lovely, except maybe the, 94 version. Actually those are high up my wish-list Italy long sleeve from late 60s/70s, next to what in Holland maybe ammounts to the ultimate punk- gesture: the green away shirt from West Germany (with Netzer or Bonhoff on the back).

Aargh Michael you lucky sod! Platini/Rep era St.Etienne shirt. I hate you. :)

As for centennial shirts, already awaiting the coming of the new year when the rumoured all-white Real Madrid shirt will go on sale, with 8 stars around the shield.

ahem, you'll notice the aftermath of a terrible obsession I had just a year ago with retro-footie.

One that I'd like but would feel odd wearing would be one of the earliest Chesterfield shirts, plain white, with a collar and a dirty great Union Jack plastered on the front. Unfortunately it would probably look uber-right wing these days but it would be a nice thing to have.

How many replica shirts do people have? I think I have too many: Chesterfield (home 97 circa cup semi final and home 88) Liverpool (away 91, home 81 with Hitachi on front, new euro home one) Slavia Prague (home 96) Perth Glory (home 00) Barca (centenary home unfortunately with Figo on the back) England (home 00)

I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting....

Tottenham (Pony Yellow away, Dark Blue adidas away, light blue adidas away), Vietnam National shirt, Guadalajara Home shirt. Those are the ones that fit me although I do have some Spurs and Scotland shirts that no longer do.Also Hearts away shirt from the late 80's when it was made by Bukta.

Wimbledon FC home 1994/5, Wimbledon FC home 1998/9, Bologna FC home 1995/6 Bologna FC away 1994/5, AC Venezia Home 1996/7, AC Venezia away 1997/8, Italy home 1982.

I no longer own any footy shirts, but in my early teens I had a round- neck plain yellow/blue 70s EFC away kit, 79-80 EFC home kit (blue socks - ugh; with the tacky stuck-on badge lovingly replaced with an embroidered one by my Mum), 82-83 Aston Villa away kit (white, claret pin-stripes and the aforementioned St Etienne top.

The EFC home kit was nicked from my locker at school. I've waited 20 years for my revenge and, thanks to Friends Reunited, I've narrowed it down to three main suspects.

would buy one of the palace retro shirt (of which there are suprisingly many, early 60's, late 70's ones (the best with the diagonal red/blue stripe on white) etc etc), but they're all about 35/40 quid! im not going to pay that for a top. i mean....i'd sooner buy a cotton retro one than a modern one....tho.

ambrose, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I own a Toffs 70s Newcastle shirt, long-sleaved, 100% cotton, 100% classic. Dutch 70s shirt too. A golden age before nylon and crap adverts.

So - that's Edna on the left, then?

Poignant.
