ok, i know thats not hugely helpful. but what the hell is this song? it is hugely irritating and rubbish, and it seems to be a favourite of people who are about to perpetrate, or have the intention of, violence.

football crowds sing it. crowds of lads in lollipop shirts sing it on Saturday nights before having a ruckus. the group of lads that nobody knew that appeared at our party 2 weeks ago and attempted to kick the door in were singing it while swigging from cans in a masculine fashion.

its the 'contorted with anger face and flying fists' song. what the hell is it?

'Where do you go - my lovely'? - a Spanish boy band with a Flamenco angle. I find its appropriation and adoption by thugs mighty strange.

Will, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no, its not that. is it? no, its something else, i'm sure

gareth, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't it "Hey Baby" by the execrable DJ Otzi?

Mark C, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...which, incidentally, was the soundtrack of a stag weekend I went on in Nottingham a couple of weeks ago. Never heard it on the Friday - by Sunday it was the tune I'd heard most in my life, ever.

Mark C, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

couple of MONTHS ago. Oops.

Mark C, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, it might well be. i've not really heard that properly. the bit in the lyrics where i put "blah blah blah", might be something like "where are your big hands from?"

gareth, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is DJ Otzi. I first heard it before the start of Moulin 'Rubbish' Rouge panning all over the auditorium and I thought it must be some piece of jollification by Baz Luhrmann to get us all 'in the mood' for his 'spectacular'.

Tom, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is indeed DJ Otzi, unfortunately Liverpool have started singing it (much to my shame) featuring the words

john arne Riise

I wanna know etc etc

how you scored that goal.

a crap chant not in Liverpool tradition.

chris, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

not to derail gareth's thread, but...

who does that r&b single currently in rotation which goes:

"he was a six foot playa blah blah blah blah blah blah, the kinda guy who made you wonder blah blah blah blah blah blah. cuz i do, wonder if you feel the same way i do, so come on ladies, if you think you can roll, iced out, blah blah."

jess, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess, that is the mighty, Sterling-championed "I Do" by Toya, and it's certainly a single-of-da-year, though it took me a week or so to warm to it.

The supa-plush "I Do Part II" is equally as fab, especially when she swipes from Dre and Snoop: "Arista is the label that PAYS me/Got the beats that'll drive y'all CRAZ-y!"

Further Ötzi info

mark s, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Seen in print only, it could very nearly be mistaken for "Reverend Black Grape"! (I wanna know! I wanna knooooooooooaaaaa! student discos ad infinitesinum).

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah. I haven't listened to that album enuf. When the single comes on the radio and she hits the "hips/dip/lips/fingertips/back/react" part I swoon like crazy tho. Only conteda for matching vocal rubato is the "back pop/can't stop" bit from Eve's "Let Me Blow 'ya Mind"

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The song is rubbish. The people who sing it are even worse. My friend hates it except when I sing it.

Ally C, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am most disappointed to learn that the Sterling-championed Toya is not the same as Toyah. Sigh.

Rebecca, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Umm... thanks Gareth. Now I have this stuck in my head: "How do I know / If he really loves me / something something thing / But I'm to shy (can't speak)...

If he loves me / ooh If he loves me not

etc.

RS, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and, right on cue, Arsenal tube station last night, i came out just as the football crowd were leaving and coming down the tube tunnel. and..."woah-o-oaho, i wanna know"

gareth, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Who else confuses DJ Otzi with PARTYING HARD Andrew WK?

I know I do!
