We've had her since Sunday. She's a sweet, sweet Great Dane who acts like a cat trapped in a racehorse's body.

We've gone through three names already. I'm hesitant to mention them here so not to influence the suggestions. Suffice to say, "Camilla" has already been thrown out.

It's hard to get close to a dog who has no name. God help us if we ever have children.

I'm trying to talk my pregnant sister-in-law to name her new baby "Cucumber Parachute." She's still up in the air about it, so you're welcome to take the name for your dog if you wish.

Otherwise, there's always the simple brilliance of "Spot".

That's not our cat. These pictures come from her animal rescue site. The cat in the picture was her foster brother.

I'm very impressed. Some of these have already made the list. I will tell what her name was before we got her:

Winnie.

And, we (including the dog) can't seem to accept that.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

What a beautiful, beautiful dog!!

Yr3k (dymaxia), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

I forgot to add - it's a tradition in my family to give our dogs 'royal' names (my grandfather was an Irish radical). So perhaps you should think of someone you'd like to see reincarnated as a dog.

Yr3k (dymaxia), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

Dubya seems like such a wrong name for that beastie, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Right. It has to be a little more oblique than that.

Peggy Sue? Michelle? Failing that, I totally agree with Margaret and Astrid, and not because they were the last names mentioned herein. (And Margaret has an added benefit -- you can call her Maggie when you're feeling affectionate toward her, and Margaret when you want to discipline her.)

Star Cauliflower (Star Cauliflower), Thursday, 10 March 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

She's gorgeous! But, I am opposed (on principle) to giving dogs people names. I support the practice of naming pets after favorite things: songs, books, food, vehicles, politics, beverages, tools, toys, games, tools, items of clothing - you get the picture.

Here are a few examples I'd consider seriously, were she mine.

Lushie (from Lush Life)
Tristero (from Jim Woodring's Frank comics)
Blackbeans (from, uh, black beans)
from here on they're pretty self explanitory -
Karmann Ghia
Bakunin
Laphraoig
Whisk
Marbles
Homburg

I'm sure you can figure out your own ideas from my example, and whatever you choose will be perfect.

Austin (Austin), Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

oops, not "Tristero" I changed my mind halfway through that - that's obviously Pynchon, and the name from Jim Woodring I wanted to cop was "Pupshaw" or "Pushpaw"

Below is a link to a comic featuring Pupshaw (shaped like a milk carton) and Pushpaw (shaped like a heart)

Bejeweled 2

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

"Sit, Bejeweled. Good Bejeweled. Have a biskie."

Austin (Austin), Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Too bad it's female, because it looks like a "Murph" or "Murphy" to me.

Well, I think Candace Bergen might have something to say about that, young man.

As you know yourself, whatever it is has to not sound totally stupid when you're giving the dog a hard time or calling repeatedly for it to come back. I was walking in a bit of a hard neighbourhood one night and this posh couple were calling their dog. They were really embarrassed too. The dog's name was Virgil. Might sound alright in America, but in Dublin it sounds effete and stupid.

I think Hildegard is good. You can call her Hildy for short.

i just came across this thread, im sure by now you have given the little girl a name, so im curious what did u decide on. I also have a female grey merle dane, due to her spots / dappled markings she was named dapples.
