latebloomer: correspondingly more exaggerated mixing is a scarifying error. (lat, Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

This seems to say more about Wisconsin than anything else. Oh and go Packers.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Poor kitties. This is appalling.

Sounds like something from The Matrix or Planet of the Apes - it's the beginning of the REVOLUTION.

"I look at them as an invasive species, plain and simple."

Hm... not sure, but I think that may be because you're a fucking moron. You still thinking about getting that GED?

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

Whoah there Ned, don't go tarring the whole state of Wisconsin because of one crazy hick firefighter in LaCrosse. This'll never happen.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

If this really is a problem, surely there has to be a better solution than allowing people to shoot them. I know of a crazy cat lady in Burlingame that goes out to feed the feral cats, then traps them so they can be spayed/fixed and innoculated then re-releases them and I think that's a good start but who thinks that a firearm fuelled cat massacre is a good thing?

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

When can I start shoot free roaming idiots? I'd like to take a blunt object to the skulls of these cat-hating sadists. Fuck them.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

er, shooting

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

xxpost People who think a cat is no different from a possum or a raccoon. People who are just a little too attached to their bird feeder. People who like to shoot things.

I'm still thinking about getting a GED, and I love cats.

Ah, you really need to see the MST3K treatment of The Giant Spider Invasion one of these days if you've not. It's colored my viewpoint of the place. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Hahahahahaha! This says way more about LACROSSE than it does anything else! In high school, we had to go down there for show choir competitions and it was like visiting the set of Northern Deliverance.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

The "invasive species" thing cracks me up. AN INVASIVE SPECIES IS NOT AN ANIMAL ON YOUR LAWN THAT YOU DON'T WANT THERE, GENIUS.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

(HAHAHAHA Ned you have to remember that any MST3K refernece to Wisconsin is going to be filtered through the show's inherent Minnesotaness and therefore not particularly fair or balanced.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

I'm guessing that the inspiration/"precedent" for this is deer hunting in Wisconsin, which is justified because of the rate deer breed etc. etc.

xpost Dan OTM!

I so want Chrissie Hynde to take her Peta army and regulate on their asses.

(Yeah, okay, so that's too cute of a picture, but still.)

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

An army of Peta Wilsons??????

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

I am a lifetime cat lover (a litter of kittens was born in my bed when I was seven though I didn't bother to wake up and notice) but I am also concerned for local and migratory bird populations, especially as they lose territory and escaped and feral cats grow in numbers. I just don't think giving Mr. Not-very-well-thought-out-scheme-violent-gun-nut carte blanche to use lethal projectile weapons on what may be a neighborhood tom on the make is likely to seriously control the feral feline population or lead to good community relations.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Well put. If there's a real problem (and I'm not convinced there is), there is such a thing as "animal control" -- give 'em some more work to do.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

HAHAHAHA Ned you have to remember that any MST3K refernece to Wisconsin is going to be filtered through the show's inherent Minnesotaness and therefore not particularly fair or balanced

Well yes, precisely. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

Clearly the only correct answer is to capture free-roaming cats and shoot them out of a cannon at Ol' Farmer Perkins' barn.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Only if we can wrassle and sodomize some hogs in between rounds.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

Dan, don't you want to use a catapult? *ducks*

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

We could launch them from a catamaran.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Fine. Fine. As long as I can opt out from the wrasslin' and sodomizin'.

If a firefighter from La Crosse gets his way, stray cats in Wisconsin could legally be blown from here to feline eternity.

Did anyone else imagine that the strays would be blasted with a firehose when reading this?

Well, I was angry until I saw that Chrissie Hynde photo and stopped and went, "Awwwwww," and, well.... Anyway -- if this is an indication of the general attitude of the citizens of LaCrosse, WI, mark that place as one of the places I NEVER want to visit. And pretty much everyone here on the thread OTM. Esp. Michael White, Jeanne, and Kenan.

(The "Grumpy Fall-frontman in wanting to shoot cats non-shockah" statement -- hilarious.)

I have only just registered that this thread wasn't called "Car Haters Suck". I didn't click on the link so I thought it was somehting about people leaving dead cats on the bonnets of cars to teach car owners a lesson. Or something.

eh, sorry. Move along.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 10 March 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Hah, the man holding a raccoon above is a friend of my family! Raccoons are not at all domesticated as a species. If you raise one from birth it might adapt, but all the common types of cats and dogs have been raised from birth for generations, had a lot of selective breeding, and are in general a lot more predictable. There are obviously border cases where people have undertrained an animal or left it in a dumb situation, but cats and dogs are a lot less likely to completely flip out. The raccoon pictured won't approach most people.

There was a news story a while back in my area about a "pet" raccoon eating some baby's face. Cats don't tend to do that sort of thing, usually. Except tigers, and they'd just eat the whole thing.

He says something like it in the early 80's Burroughs doc, so after. Jeanne made me think of it when she said that, and yes, that's exactly the joke I was trying to set up.
