AKA "Okay, Halle can act but only on television."

o come on, she was great in b*a*p*s

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 10 March 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

i thot that the messages of hustons novels were bleached out, and a rather tepid melodrama was put in its place. i also was unconvinced by halle berry and her hysterics.

I've seen her lovely "come hither" face on bus stops and bench backs all over town. Is Oprah somehow up in the mix? I imagine so.

I read a review which bascially said that they completely ignored the issue of skin shades, and I was like, is it really from the same book?? So I skipped it.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

When they showed the previews for this on the Oscar telecast, everyone was like, "oh man, Halle Berry doing an Oprah TV movie, what happened?" but I was like "it's Their Eyes Were Watching God, dude, you can't ask for a plummier role for a black actress!"

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

I didn't watch it, though.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, they did completely remove the skin shade stuff and pitch it as a straight love story, which is disappointing, but the end result was way more enjoyable than it had any right to be given it was a sanitized miss-the-point adaptation starring Ms. Gorgeous-But-Can't-Act Berry.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I bet it was very good if you hadn't read the book. Maybe I'll rent it.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Probably the best thing for my enjoyment was that I couldn't really remember the book; in fact, most of the things I remembered actaully happend in Sula (which I read at about the same time).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Was there a dead mule in it?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Was there rabies-related death?

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Yes to rabies, no to mule.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

The whole rabies incident was FUCKING OUTSTANDING, btw.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

I thought only I confused Sula and TEWWG!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

I think Oprah is generally a force for good.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Don't tell Jonathan Franzen or whatever his name is that!

I read a review which bascially said that they completely ignored the issue of skin shades, and I was like, is it really from the same book??

I have seen exactly three movies in my life address this issue, and they were all by Spike Lee. Apparently it's still too hot a topic for most everyone.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

There are many that address it obliquely, starting with Birth of a Nation (and probably something before that). I still love the Julian Bond/Garret Morris skit on SNL.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Which reminds me, why isn't Julian Bond like the president of the world right now?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 March 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

It gets addressed on Ego Trip VH1 specials.
