So why exactly is there a "short bus"?

I mean really now, why? What's the rationale? It seems a little cruel and unusual for certain schoolkids.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

well, there are less retards out there. a full bus would be uneconomical.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

but why don't they ride on the regular schoolbus with everyone else, they go to the same school!

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

Haha! Short bus kids! Aww, fuck me, I used to have a great time making fun of the short bus kids. Actually, there were three kids on the short bus in our town, and all had Downs Syndrome: Michael Monahan, Michael Monahan (#2) and the sister of Michael Monahan (#2), Lindsay Monahan who didn't have Downs Syndrome but was otherwise not-quite there. I got bored one day in forth or fifth grade and counted all of the Michael / and or Lindsay Monahans in the phone book, because I thought that anybody that name was retarded. Turns out I was wrong, which is good because there were like fifty names in my town.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

Foucault could totally do a book about the short bus.

djdee (djdee2005), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

Fuck any French skeleton writing about short busses.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

It's cool, Mark. We all make mistakes. And there's nothing to get mad about. And please put a penny in the swear-jar, Ned.

Death is no obstacle for the French.

mothers ruin

etc

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

I mean see back in my school days the question was always, "How stupid/crazy do you have to be to get on the short bus?" But why does it exist?? Kids with learning disabilities need to have that four-wheeled albatross around their necks for some reason, am I right??

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

uh, cause its wheelchair accessible and has seatbelts?

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

no cripples ever rode the short bus in my town and why the hell do they get seatbelts?

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

as compensation for having to ride on the short bus!

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:39 (twenty years ago)

look, it makes perfect sense alright?

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

no, really. the "special" kids would also be subject to ridicule on the regular bus. the short bus protects them.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

the kids at our school who ride the short bus are physically and developmentally disabled - meaning they really can't be left alone. I've always assumed the smaller capacity bus made it easier to supervise them.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

short bus = protects them from other kids

seatbelts = protects them from themselves

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

ladies and gentlemen, cutty: going to hell so you don't have to

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:48 (twenty years ago)

that's about right.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:48 (twenty years ago)

more relevant question: is the short bus strictly an american phenomenon?

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

yes, in britain it's a wee lorry

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:50 (twenty years ago)

Let's turn this into a contentious debate on mainstreaming.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:54 (twenty years ago)

i hate it when they betray their underground roots and sellout to join the mainstream.

djdee (djdee2005), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

Wait, we're talking about grime MCs, right?

djdee (djdee2005), Friday, 11 March 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

Let's turn this into a contentious debate on mainstreaming.

Let's not. I had a legally blind student at the beginning of this year, who didn't even have a pair of glasses, in one of my regular classes. I was given no support or materials for him. I bought him a magnifying glass so he could at least see the book and had to drive him home myself from after-school tutoring since that's the only way I could present the material to him (writing his assignments on huge chart tablets; reading work aloud and then transcribing his answers). It was bullshit. and he wasn't even bad off enough to ride the short bus.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Friday, 11 March 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

Short Bus would be a great MC name.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 11 March 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

Hmm. Having not experienced a short bus first-hand (that is, not seeing one IRL), I always just assumed that those particular buses were going much faster, and as such, the length of the bus was approaching zero.

So they're actually smaller when stationary too?

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 11 March 2005 03:17 (twenty years ago)

we don't have short buses in australia. we have blue buses, or minibuses.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 11 March 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

TART CART!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 11 March 2005 03:31 (twenty years ago)

so the short buses are the indie rock of student transportation, whilst the long buses are Britney singles?

actually one student DID "graduate" from the short bus to the long bus after a few years. No one really noticed, but from what I understand the short bus kids thought he got "too cool" for them. A total sellout.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Friday, 11 March 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

Long busses are for the really well-hung kids.

Remy (null) (x Jeremy), Friday, 11 March 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

ive never heard of these short buses

i dont think we have them in a england

if we do,i thnk we shouold call them michael monahan buses. it would be a fitting tribute

charltonlido (gareth), Friday, 11 March 2005 06:07 (twenty years ago)

Short People got no reason
Short People got no reason
Short People got no reason
To live

They got little hands
Little eyes
They walk around
Tellin' great big lies
They got little noses
And tiny little teeth
They wear platform shoes
On their nasty little feet

Well, I don't want no Short People
Don't want no Short People
Don't want no Short People
`Round here

Short People are just the same
As you and I
(A Fool Such As I)
All men are brothers
Until the day they die
(It's A Wonderful World)

Short People got nobody
Short People got nobody
Short People got nobody
To love

They got little baby legs
That stand so low
You got to pick 'em up
Just to say hello
They got little cars
That go beep, beep, beep
They got little voices
Goin' peep, peep, peep
They got grubby little fingers
And dirty little minds
They're gonna get you every time
Well, I don't want no Short People
Don't want no Short People
Don't want no Short People
'Round here

eman (eman), Friday, 11 March 2005 06:43 (twenty years ago)

amen.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Friday, 11 March 2005 06:44 (twenty years ago)

a quickie google search on the phrase "tart cart" reveals that this quaint un-PC term for a "short bus" is apparently peculiar to new jersey.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 11 March 2005 06:49 (twenty years ago)

Are the short bus girls known for putting out in New Jersey? What a weird place.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Friday, 11 March 2005 06:50 (twenty years ago)

it WOULD explain some things wr2 new jersey, dontcha think?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 11 March 2005 06:53 (twenty years ago)
