RIP Dave Allen

One of my Dad's favourite comedians. Haven't seen him on TV for years, but he was a big part of childhood weekend evenings round the telly with my folks. :(

I was worried this was about dave gruber allen!

RIP, dave allen

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 11 March 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

What the... ?!?!?! I don't really give a monkeys about most of the RIPpers but this one I care about - what a guy!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 11 March 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

"May your God go with you". I don't know whether my parents got more prudish as they got older, or Allen just got smuttier but I do remember his late '80s (early '90s?) comeback series was a subject of great living room discomfort. A stand-up comic who never stood up.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 11 March 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

Alternative comedy? Pah!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 11 March 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

I think he got smuttier. I wouldn't have been allowed to watch his earlier stuff if it had been smutty, but there was a definite progression in his later shows towards child-and-parent-embarrassment levels hitherto unknown.

I was going to title this thread "Goodnight and may your God go with you", you know.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Well, that really sucks.

My favourite nine-fingered Irish boozehound comic

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 11 March 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

Mine two. I am saddened by this. My mum and Dad went to see him in 1972 and my mum still talks fondly of thinking at one stage that my dad might actually die of laughter.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 11 March 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

How sad. RIP.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Friday, 11 March 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

:(

lock robster (robster), Friday, 11 March 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Damn, one of my faves gone. Used to love watching him on TV as a kid.
One of the greats.

RIP Dave.

Andy Jay, Friday, 11 March 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Sad news this. I remember being quite taken with his laid-back, rather louche style - the bar stool, the tumbler of whiskey, the dapper suit from which he was forever brushing away imaginary flecks of I-don't-know-what. A style quite apart from his more eager-to-please, 'eh missus!' music hall style comic contemporaries.
I don't know if I ever really got his jokes when I was a youngster - I just laughed along with dad - but I did like the cut of his jib.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

... don't forget the fags too, he was usually brushing away cigarette ash as I remember it

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

A real shame. The last thing of his I remember seeing was his series for ITV back in 1993, which was great. Was hoping he'd make a comeback of some kind. RIP.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

Dave Allen was great. I wuv him.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

For about five years I thought Dave had already passed away back in the mid 90s. I don't mean for this to sound distasteful, perhaps he would appreciate the ironing? I was a fan, his 90s ITV comeback show was quite the hit with us in the playground. He was the first person I saw on TV missing a full thumb.

Sven Bastard (blueski), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

The Django Reinhardt of comedy, indeed.

Used to see him quite regularly walking around Kensington when I worked there. Saw him twice on stage - once at the Queen's Theatre in Glasgow with my dad in the early '70s, and once at the Aldywch with Laura in the early '90s, and he was fantastic on both occasions. RIP, for sure.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

1992 or 1993, I forget which, but his was one of the series that Carlton launched its taking over of the Thames franchise with. I have no idea if it went out elsewhere in the country.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 11 March 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Carlton:

I never saw this series.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 11 March 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Damn, never even heard of this guy! I like the sound of him, though. I like people who are annoyed by certain follies when growing up and then *stay* annoyed at them rather than just replicating them.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 March 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Weird to read.

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 11 March 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

they used to run his series on a PBS station here, I loved it when I was a teenager. I wondered what had ever happened to him. Too bad.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

He was a good friend of my ex-wife's dad. I loved him most of the time as a comic, especially the sitting down and rambling stuff and some of the Pope sketches.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Oh dear. I loved him; he ws really funny. PJ MIller and I listened to a documentary about him only a few weeks ago.

KeithW (kmw), Friday, 11 March 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

Oh no. I loved him lots.

RIP Dave.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

Aww. I haven't seen him for years, but I used to watch him a lot when I was in middle and high school. The local PBS station ran him back to back with Monty Python. He was funny. I remember the whole controvery over his "fucking clock" joke, and his rationale for it, which was something like, "When you retire after 50 years on the job and all you get on your way out the door is a clock, it's not a clock, it's a fucking clock." (I looked for the actual quote on that, but couldn't find it. Help?)

Anyway, may his god go with him.
