Comic Relief in the 05: COLDPLAY WATCH

I count one use of Coldplay so far. I haven't really been paying attention, so far. Let us see how much they use the songs of Coldplay to highlight the plights of all the poor Africans and also the money that goes to help those poor people in the UK which everyone always forgets about!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

Am I terrible because I always turn over when they are doing the plight-highlighting? I know why they are doing this, I watch the news, I read the papers...you'll still get some of my money without tugging my heartstrings.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

Pwhoar, Dermot O'Leary, swoon, perve, drool etc...

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

(who is not Coldplay)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Doesn't everyone switch over then?

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

I just watched that one there. It wasn't Coldplay though, it was McFly for about the third time already...

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:24 (twenty years ago)

McFly?! They do not give the sense of sorrow that is necessary!

Coldplay should have released their new single sooner.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

Ah, but, you see, McFly have done the official Comic Relief single, as they will sell by the bucketload, more so than Coldplay.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

It's not switching over during the plight-highlighting that shocks me, it's switching back to watch the unfunny shite inbetween.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Less heartstring-tugging, more Dermot, plzkthanxbye

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

I keep hoping that the inclusion of people like Simon Pegg, Mackenzie Crook etc in sketches may make them funny. It hasn't, really.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

Right, that Peter Kay clip totally redeemed the whole night. Shaun & Bez!

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I just saw Peter Kay and it was good. He's my son's hero.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Geoffrey from Rainbow look gaunt? However, Shaun & Bez! Brian May & Roger Taylor! Ken & Deirdre Barlow! Bernie Clifton and an ostrich! Tony Christie! Best thing ever*!!!

* context being "as opposed to Lenny Henry, Rowan Atkinson and My sodding Family".

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and Jools f*&@ing Holland.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

Well I'm not going back near the TV tonight in case I see Lenny Henry.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

Wow, those Little Britain sketches were hysterical*

*(rubbish)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

Haha, wait till they get to the Trisha one!

BBC, with this Vicar of Dibley special, you are truly spoiling us.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

And now I can hear the non-stop roller coaster of savage satire that is The Vicar of Dibley.

There is far too much comedy being made nowadays.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

Ah, ailsa beat me to it. Isn't this a bit late for Dibley's key audience of old people?

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Oh, hell's tits, I just looked at the TV listing guide. Lenny Henry is doing a sketch as Condoleezza Rice. Whoo, and indeed, hoo.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

But the Vicar of Dibley is the second best British sitcom EVER, as proven by science (where "science" = sad gits who vote in BBC2 polls)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

Look how high To the Manor Born got in that poll and despair.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

I'm doing enough despairing as it is, thank you, watching the Vicar of Dibley meets the Antiques Roadshow. Top modern comedy for the discerning viewer.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

Look, they are even making Simon Amstell crap. Why are they spoofing Vicky Pollard? I don't even understand. THIS ISN'T FUNNY!

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Is this person off some telly programme or something? Or does someone just think it's funny?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

I've given up and switched over to The Simpsons, personally.

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

Oh, OK, I understand. I know no-one who suffered the Catherine Tate thing, and now I know why.

Now it's Rowan Atkinson v Rachel Stevens. I'm not sure Jim Broadbent as a depressed Batman is going to redeem this either.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

I am an old curmudgeon. They don't make telly like they used to! It were much funnier in my day, etc etc.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

Comic Relief's always been pish. Celeb Charity makes good things bad. I'm playing Panzer General and sulking.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Children In Need's usually better, you get newsreaders dressed up as cavemen and stuff, which is always good for a laugh. And less Lenny Henry.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

Haha, Comic Relief University Challenge has just ended with Stephen Fry talking about p0rn film titles.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

And McFly are on AGAIN.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

They're really letting me down with the amount of Coldplay going on here. I just don't feel any of these plights are worthwhile without it! Sell me it, comic relief!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, we've got some Damien Rice. Will that do?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

And Keane are coming up soon. Alan Partridge wasn't even funny, are they doing it all this pishily on purpose?

Erk! It's Bono!

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

Ohmigod! Dennis off EastEnders! They are wheeling out all my rubbish and obvious girlie crushes tonight.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:53 (twenty years ago)

It was good that Dave Allen died and they had lots of comedians in one place to interview for the news. Great money saving job, BBC.

Ally C (Ally C), Friday, 11 March 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

Eric Clapton does not constitute Comic Relief! GET OFF MY TELLY! (yes I know I can turn it over, but I'm still pathetically hoping something good will be on, also Dennis off EastEnders!)

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 12 March 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

OK, they've just repeated the Peter Kay clip and it still pisses all over everything else that has been on for the last six hours, dear god, I need a life...

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 12 March 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

Oh, God, they've just dragged out Will McDonald, another of my sad crushes of the past.

AND THEY ARE PLAYING LEGAL MAN (or possibly the theme tune from Eurotrash, I have the sound down now) = this show is being designed for me and I still think it's shit.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 12 March 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

I think it was the Eurotrash theme, but I'm not entirely sure - I had the sound down too by that point.

(I remember going to The Egg in Edinburgh a few years ago, and having fits of laughter when the DJ played those two tracks back-to-back. It was certainly funnier than 95% of Comic Relief this year.)
