I need to know!

One unprovoked culture, nation, tribe, whatever, invades another. Both are democracies.

Fascism?

This was a classic: Body Image Fascism - C or D?

Well, if we're just not going to answer the question, I'll chime in.

I think you're looking for this thread here: Make A Band Name More Reasonable

Eleventy-Twelve (Eleventy-Twelve), Saturday, 12 March 2005 05:14 (twenty years ago)

Since differing cultures have invaded one another for, oh, longer than written language has been around, then it seems to me rather anachronistic to designate all these invasions as fascistic, since fascism, as a political terminology has only existed since about 1922. The identification of one or another of the cultures as "democratic" seems to me to be irrelevant to the basic interaction of the invader with the invaded.

I could be wrong. Tell me if I am. Please.

Aimless (Aimless), Saturday, 12 March 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

If someone on an island has been making a creamy spread out of peanuts for centuries and you come along and call it "peanut butter" is that wrong?

Eleventy-Twelve (Eleventy-Twelve), Saturday, 12 March 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

... a very OLD person, obviously, on that island.

Eleventy-Twelve (Eleventy-Twelve), Saturday, 12 March 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

My point, should you wish to accept it, is that calling something by a new name whern it is as old as the hills and nearly as universal as sex, does not cast a new light upon the subject. Old wine in new bottles and all that.

oh, I'm sorry.

No, you can be a fascist and never invade another country in your life. It's more of a domestic thing where government and big business become one. I think the word you're looking for is imperialism.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Saturday, 12 March 2005 07:31 (twenty years ago)

yeah, it sounds like a criticism from those who use "ameriKKKa" who don't have their -isms down pat.

kingfish van vlasic pickles (Kingfish), Saturday, 12 March 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Of course you can be a fascist and never invade another country in your life. What, then, is fascism?

1. often Fascism
1. A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.
2. A political philosophy or movement based on or advocating such a system of government.
2. Oppressive, dictatorial control.

So back to the original question, then? It does or does not qualify as fascism?

Eleventy-Twelve (Eleventy-Twelve), Saturday, 12 March 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Those all sound like domestic issues to me.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Saturday, 12 March 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

oh no 1112's persistent questioning could possibly be revolutionary signior. we must mock him and post pictures of gerbils so that he does not inspire the masses to rise up against our cruel regime.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 12 March 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Then we are all in agreement that the answer is clearly no.

Eleventy-Twelve (Eleventy-Twelve), Saturday, 12 March 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

invading other countries does not make one facist, but facists have been known to invade other countries.

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Saturday, 12 March 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

What is the essence of fascism?

kingfish van vlasic pickles (Kingfish), Saturday, 12 March 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

total control

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Saturday, 12 March 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

total control

So, a group that falls short of total control is not being fascist.

Eleventy-Twelve (Eleventy-Twelve), Saturday, 12 March 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

I sorta don't get the question. Fascism is a form of government. Invasion is an act that all forms of government have practised. So no, an invading country is an invading country. It has no part in any political description of fascism. End of "ongoing debate."

paulhw (paulhw), Monday, 14 March 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

x-post: not being facist enough

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

I'm confused about the language here. How can one 'culture' 'invade' another? Culture is a collective product. It's not created by the invaders, it can only be manipulated by them.

Shatterproof Glass (dymaxia), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

re-read the question.

The Argunaut (sexyDancer), Monday, 14 March 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

huh?

george saunders, Monday, 14 March 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

The original question stated "culture, nation, tribe, whatever"
