High School (My Dreams Have Been Crushed!)

Well, I got into the schools I wanted, but I can't go to the one I want. The school that I don't want to got to but applied anyway is giving me a scholarship that would pay for half of my tuition, plus an extra thousand dollars just because I went to their sister school. I've never felt so bad about getting free money before! Can any of you make me feel better about this? Did you not get to go to the high school of your dreams? I'm going to an all girl's one, so if any of you did, can you tell me any stories that might make it seem ok?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 13 March 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

I didn't get into the high school I wanted but I think it wound up being better for me in the end. I wanted to get into this school that all my genius friends were going to, but I wound up being a big fish in a small pond at my neighborhood school, which wasn't a bad thing at all.

Anyway, you'll get a good education wherever you go as long as you work hard and regard your teachers with a healthy balance of respect and skepticism.

Well, from what my mom says and how I feel about that school, it seems like that will be my case too.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 13 March 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Being a big fish in a small pond is good. It'll set you up for years of confidence in your abilities and you'll be able to build on that. If things go well you'll be like the Andy Johnson of Oakland.

(If not, then the Darren Huckerby or Shaun Goater)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 13 March 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

My mom wants me to be on the tennis team. Geez man! I wanted to join a club but the school I have to go to doesn't have any I want to join. I was going to do journalism, but I don't want to be a journalist any more. I want to be a novelist or a musician. I'll probably have to be both to get a decent amount of money though, unless I become famouse doing one of those.

I have a bit more confidence as a musician now. On Friday I played my guitar in Literature and English class and all my friends loved my songs. My English teacher was surprised when I told him I haven't had any lessons yet.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 13 March 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and that's another reason why I wanted to go to the other school. They have a music program!!!!!!

GOD DAMNIT!!!!!

Aja (aja), Sunday, 13 March 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Being a big fish in high school led to having a big shock at my relative mediocrity in college, but I really don't think that matters. Both of those evaluations depend on other people, in both cases I was the same. Anyway, probably you will find people and things to do there that you weren't planning on doing at the beginning, that happened to me in both high school and college. Not having a music program sucks, though, I hope you can find a substitute for that.

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

You choose your high school? Bizarre.

But I guess I'm spoiled, since we have good public schools around here. I've never thought about places where people opt to apply to private schools.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

The closed this to a music program is Chior and I don't know if I'll join that. I wanted to join it at the other school. I just don't want to be singing with all girls. I perfer male voices to female. Often times I make my voice deeper when I sing for because I don't really like the sound of my natual sining voice. I will however sing in my natural voice for a musical my school is putting on because I have to hit this high not and I only can if I use my natural voice. Pluse they said I sang it perfectly with my natural voice, but it makes me feel like I'm a singer like Madonna, Cher, or Alicia Keys or something. It just feels weird because my voice fits the types of music I pretty much hate instead of the stuff I listen to so much. It's like Fredie Murcury singing to Fugazi or something. I guess my voice only really fits Queen and Bowie out of what I listen to. Well, maybe Bettie Serverret, but that's a little too high for me. Well, so is Queen, but for some reason I can sing "Killer Queen" pretty well.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

Often times I make my voice deeper when I sing for because

whoops. "For" should be taken out of there.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

Aja, be grateful that you have the opportunity to get a quality of education many of your peers don't and make the best of whichever school you end up at. Most kids must do this (make the best) with far worse options than you appear to have.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Well yeah, but I'm tempted to let my GPA drop so they don't renew my scholarship for my sophomore year. My GPA has to be at least 3.5. Right now it's 4.0. I'm sure I'll learn something, but it doesn't seem like I'd learn as much as if I go to the other school. This is kind of happening at my school right now. It's all too easy and so it's become boring. I don't even care about what's going on in some of my classes any more.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

What benefit would you have from losing your scholarship? If your mom has to pay more for you to get your high school education now doesn't that mean you'd have less for college?

maybe if you're saving money by going here where you have a scholarship maybe you can persuade her to spring for some music lessons outside of school.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

I know. It's good to have the extra money for things, like the music, but I haven't had a single lesson and I've got three good songs, and some that I'm still working on. When my class heard me play, they didn't really believe I haven't had lessons. I know that can only take me so far, but if worse comes to worst, I can always ask Clint Conley, Roger Miller, Peter Prescot, or Chris Browka for help. Chris and Clint are probably the most relyable though.

I just feel like I'll be able to actually get accepted to the College I want to go to if I go to the other high school. I feel like I'm saving money and throwing away my future.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

If you do well at your high school and make efforts to do things you're interested in regardless of whether your school has established programs (you may have to be creative and find your own ways), I can't imagine you'd throw away your future. I went to public school (for free!) and now go to college with a ridiculous number of kids from boarding schools, so somehow it evened out in the end.

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm just pissed. I just hope I don't get pregnat. I don't get it. It's an all girls school, but they are known for having quite a few girls get pregnat. Maybe it's because they make them drop out or someting.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Aja, dreams take a lot of work, compromise and improvisation. You have to steer them constantly, like a car - and if you hit a detour in the road, get out the map and figure out how to get there another way. OTOH, the absolutely guaranteed way to never get your dreams is to give up on them.

I find it hard to believe your dream was simply to spend time in a particular school building - that isn't how dreams work. If your dream was to learn a lot about what you enjoy, to make friends who enjoy the same things and make the most of yourself, then your dream is definitely not crushed. That can happen anywhere. This was just a tiny detour. Happens all the time. Keeps you on your toes.

(BTW, getting pregnant or not shouldn't be left up to hoping about it. You can decide.)

Aimless (Aimless), Sunday, 13 March 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Skip School. Run away to Spain. Catch a train to Denmark. Meet a Russian Monk. Hike to Tibet. Eat some tea leaves. Steal a yak. Ride thorugh the Great Gobi. Visit a wise man. Share some green tea with someone you don't know. Steal a canoe. Ride down the Yellow River. Find your way to the Mekong River. Wade through some rice paddies. Catch some frogs. Lose your Russian Monk. Eat some more tea leaves. Catch a steamboat to Bangkok. Fly to Singapore. Eat at Newton Circus. Fly to Osaka. Have some tea with Shonen Knife. Catch the Shinkasen to Hiroshima. Feel Sad. Feel better. The world is a great place to see.

Listen young lady... I understand it is hard to get away from your feeling but you need to see why you feel certain ways and see if they are justified.
There is a lot of hard work involved to place you in the school you don't want to go to... if you really don't want to go there then it can be arranged. I think it might be best because you will learn some valuable life lessons that a REALLY, REALLY expensive school you are whining about not going to will never be able to teach you. When your biggest complaint in life these days is that you may have missed Richard Butler swag his skinny ass at Slim's then I think you are doing pretty well, especially since your parents are at their wit's end working some very long hours in very out of the way places to put food on the table, music in your ear and give you a place to wash your butt.
Not everything is in the books or the programs. Your best teacher is life itself. Maybe you need to feel the sting true hardship brings to one's soul.

I just feel like I'll be able to actually get accepted to the College I want to go to if I go to the other high school. I feel like I'm saving money and throwing away my future.
I got into the college you want to go to through public school. The "learning" I didn't get from them I got myself. Maybe you don't have a true hunger to get your dreams. If that is so, then neither the school you want to go to nor the school you are scheduled to go to are going to really help you. The problem is with you and therefore me. I can't change the way you feel but I do have some influence as to what school you attend. Like I said, if you really don't want to go to the school you are going to then I won't support your presence there because it is too much money to waste. The consequence you pay as a young woman is the San Francisco public school system.... and, to tell you the truth, it may not be that bad for you since it may be the best thing for you since your complaints these days are very silly.
The last thing I want tell you is this. If you don't want your dad to respond to your silliness in a public forum then don't put it out in a public forum. I shall see you when I get back to the States.

Roman (Roman), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

My biggest problem is that I may miss Richard Butler swag his skinny ass at Slim's???

First of all, how'd you know I saw Richard Butler shake his skinny ass literally two feet away from me, and in my face??

Second, do you know why I almost missed that? I got in huge fight with my mom and then I began cutting myself. Don't worry I don't plan on ever doing it again. It hurts too much, especially when your mom says, "Don't do that. You'll ruin the knife."

Besides, my biggest problem now is getting over this twisted and fractured knee I got today.
