Who is the sexiest woman over the age of 45?

And if you illustrate your post with a pic, the pic must be of that woman over the age of 45.

30 century man, Monday, 14 March 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

my mum.

scg, Monday, 14 March 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

actually. no. she is the most beautiful though.

scg, Monday, 14 March 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

All my celebrity crushes are over 45, and in most cases over 50. I've mentioned them plenty of times before so won't bother doing so again here.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 14 March 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

Catherine Deneuve? She must be over 50 in the pic below:

carol voorderman.

scg, Monday, 14 March 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

actually, the girl who sits in the dictionary corner and looks awkward and uncomfortable is probably the most beautiful girl on television. she's not over 45 though.

scg, Monday, 14 March 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

Saw The Inn Of The Sixth Happiness on TV the other afternoon, and my God was Ingrid Bergman gorgeous, even past her peak (especially when she's running through these Welsh hills pretending to be Chinese mountains in immaculate Yves Klein blue and her hair gets all ruffled up), but I looked the details up and she was only 43 when she made that. Terrible film, though.

Oddly enough, yes.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 14 March 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

There seems to be an age cut-off point beyond which women aren't "allowed" to be portrayed as sexual. They become mothers or something else. But each decade the cut-off point gets older and older. It's amazing to think that Mrs Robinson as the "older woman" in The Graduate was only supposed to be 35, which would be a young woman these days. You can find women in the 40-45 who are still portrayed/portray themselves as "sexy" (Madonna, Elizabeth Hurley, Sex & The City women), but after 45, not so much. That seems to be the new sexual cut-off point for women. (Of course for men it doesn't apply at all.)

Don't fancy her one bit.

Marianne Faithfull, though...(cut to shot of demolished chimney played in reverse)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 14 March 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

Surely Mrs Robinson wasn't supposed to be 35 - she had a 19-y-o daughter. Possible, I guess. Anne Bancroft *was* 35 in that role, tho - and Dustin H was 29.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 14 March 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

Nigella seconded. She can creme my brulee anyday. But she can't be over 45, can she?

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 14 March 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

Well the 90s sexualised the thritysomething woman, but I don't think the noughties have done it yet for the fortysomething woman. We do seem to have lost the paradigm of the sexy older woman that films like The Graduate played on. Because the sexiness of the 30something woman in the 90s was basically 30something woman trying her hardest to look like and have the lifestyle of 20something woman. You look at Ally McBeal and she could be 35 or she could be 25. There's no sense of her maturity adding to or changing her sex appeal.

NickB (NickB), Monday, 14 March 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

I mean that when she was married to John Diamond she was a "not-at-all-like-my-dad" leftie, even though she was seeing/shagging Saatchi even as JD was on his deathbed, and now she's married Saatchi, moved from Hammersmith to Belgravia and is a Tory shitehawk.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 14 March 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

Fair do's, don't really know that much about her past. Her father's child I guess and maybe the lefty phase was just an aberration.

has nigella actually said anything tory? she's the daughter of one and she's nobbing one, but other than that?

Well the 90s sexualised the thritysomething woman

Right: before then women in their thirties were um post-sexual? pre-sexual? i think that's a pretty bold claim.

N_RQ, Monday, 14 March 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

It's not a bold claim. I was talking about cultural representations of women. It can't have escaped your notice that no one much was talking about 30something woman as a 'type' in the 80s, and then in the 90s we had Bridget Jones, Ally McBeal, Sex & The City and any number of movies about 30something women, usually with a sexual/romantic focus.

Probably, but there was a tipping point in the 90s when the sexy single 30something woman became a cultural type and therefore particular focus for TV programmes, chicklit novels, films etc. Presumably to do with demography - until fairly recently women in their thirties tended to be settled down with children, but because women are now putting it off until later bla bla bla...

I saw Kim Cattrall yesterday in Union Square in front of an art gallery. I saw her from about two feet away, her cheeks looked a little reddish and her hair looked dry, but she looked pretty good nonetheless.

I'll revive this thread in November with Meg Ryan.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 21 April 2006 08:01 (nineteen years ago)

Judy Dench is indeed lovely, but would men still want to jump into bed with her? Lovely perhaps, but not really sexy, not any more at least. I think this where the age/gender apartheid really kicks in. Women over 45 can look sexy, but generally because they actually look 10 years younger than they are. A woman who genuinely looks middle-aged isn't really sexy, not in our culture anyway. But the same doesn't seem to be true for men. As long as he's kept reasonably trim and still has most of his hair, a middle-aged man can actually look his age - ie a bit craggy and weatherbeaten - and still be very sexy. I don't think that's true - or in any case it's far less true - for women.

joanna b., Friday, 21 April 2006 08:17 (nineteen years ago)

Until Meg turns 45 I'm choosing Michelle Pfeiffer.

TS: Mick Ralphs vs. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 21 April 2006 08:41 (nineteen years ago)

It's true that in general women's sex appeal drops off a little earlier than for men. But swings and roundabouts: it also kicks in a few years earlier. Consider the sexual misery of most 16 year old boys, pimply and gangly and unattractive just as their hormones are raging the hardest...
