w/r/t Anton Scalia:

Dahlia Lithwick said it best: (PARAPHRASE) You desperately want to disagree with Scalia and then you read one of his dissents and can't help but agree with him, for the time being at least.

That's a bad bit of p-phrasing, but she's right: he's an outstanding writer, even if it's in support of juvenile execution (wtf?!) or whatever.

"That's a bad bit of p-phrasing, but she's right: he's an outstanding writer, even if it's in support of juvenile execution (wtf?!) or whatever."

Lucky for me I don't give a shit whether he can string a phrase together so I can hate him without contradiction.

She's a puss-drunk boil on the ass of popular culture, desperately in need of being savagely lanced.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 March 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to pretend you misspelled "pussy," not "pus."

Lately I really hate John Stossel again. I guess it's kind of a retro-hate.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 14 March 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

Actually I can understand the Beyonce hate totally. What I can't understand, though, is -- Jeff Foxworthy?!?! Mind you, Mr. NYC is so fully entrenched in Northeastern Urbanity that he's not at all likely to be a part of Foxworthy's target audience, but... c'mon, "You might be a redneck" jokes being hateable? I guess... I guess you have to actually have had experience with that sort of person in order for the joke to be funny. And I like his bits about NASCAR, made-up words, and his children.

(BTW, I relate a hell of a lot more to George Lopez's routine, but I still find the "You might be a redneck" thing hilarious.)

- pretty much any standup comic who has his own talk show

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 14 March 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

(Unless the hate arose from the "Blue Collar TV" show, that is. Now that program -- no. It just looks so damn wrong from the previews ALONE. But that still doesn't color my attitude about Jeff Foxworthy. After seeing his standup routine on TV for over ten years, it's not likely to.)

(xpost)

I fear Amateurist may be OTM re: "pretty much any standup comic who has his own talk show". *sniff* Poor Colin Ferguson....

Surreal Addiction (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 14 March 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

isn't that the guy who shot people on the LIE?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 14 March 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

I don't know. Maybe there was another guy by the same name who did that. I'm talking about Mr. "Late Late Show", though.

Vincent Gallo

Dan I. (Dan I.), Monday, 14 March 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

Actually, Jeff Foxworthy annoys me too. I think it's his smugness. Pretty much the only people I flat-out dislike are smug people. Nothing to do with location or subject matter, but an attitude of self-righteous complacency is guaranteed to get a rise out of me.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v489/stephenx/2005_0208_ricegraphic.jpg

Stephen X (Stephen X), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

Jeff Foxworthy -- smug? Just because he doesn't display the vast amounts of shame people from outside his socioeconomic or cultural background feel he "needs" to display? I mean, he's not saying that "redneckness" is the only way to go -- he's just saying that, if you come from that heritage, it's good to laugh at yourself and recognize that there are others out there who also don't come from a highly cultured background. In fact, Foxworthy's definition of what a "redneck" is is, "the glorious absence of intelligence and sophistication". Which isn't an indictment nor an endorsement on those who come from that; just because your Aunt Peggy lives in a doublewide and uses old Cool-Whip containers as Tupperware and your Uncle Ed likes to watch NASCAR races on TV wearing nothing but a pair of boxer shorts and a pair of black socks, and also goes to Hooters and clucks at the waitresses, doesn't mean that you yourself will repeat this sort of behavior or lifestyle. It just means you've got relatives who are rednecks and, hey, it'd be fun to laugh about that.

Surreal Addiction (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

Dee, just tell Uncle Ed to wear white socks and everything will be immensely better.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

Ha. (Actually, I'm mostly regurgitating old "You might be a redneck:" jokes just to illustrate a point.) (Really, if I were to ascribe the actions of my relatives to standup routines, I'd go with George Lopez's, as I stated earlier. But that doesn't mean I don't know people with relatives like the ones described by Jeff Foxworthy.)

The redneck stuff doesn't seem smug as much as his overall style, and has nothing really to do with his subject matter. I feel the same way about a lot (most) comedians. Seinfeld included. Mitch Hedberg excepted.

Remy (null) (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 15 March 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

the annoyingly overbearing and pushy chick in my environmental law class who i lent a book to on monday on a strict promise that she would return it the next day as i really needed it. she still hasn't given it back. i used to just be irritated by her, now it has developed into fully blown dislike.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 17 March 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

Bettman should be vivisectioned.

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Thursday, 17 March 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

this is the wrong thread, but do you really think that it's Bettman's fault?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 17 March 2005 02:28 (twenty years ago)

well, to a point. I mean, he approved extending the last labor deal past the initial expiration date. Plus, I worked for the league for a few years, and I watched him forge his wife's name on checks. Also, I blame the owners more than anyone, and he (b-man) is the most easily removed of the 31 heads... and Goodenow's an idiot, but b-man seems truly vicious/mean spirited.

Jimmy Mod Has Returned With Spices And Silks (ModJ), Thursday, 17 March 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

That I know personally only four people.

Two of which are old employers. If each one of them was hit by a bus I would not consider it a loss to humanity. Hate is a strong enough word there, I think.

The third is an old university friend, who turned out to a be total C*nt when the opportunity arose.

The fourth is a C-movie director who needs shot.

Of people I don't know:

*Brian Cass who owns Huntingdon Life Sciences
*Anyone who practices vivisection (and especially this fat girl who was waiting for me in a line in the American Embassy two years ago and thought it was funny to giggle at her studies in nueroscience when I asked her if it included boring holes into the heads of bound primates. Evil sicko)
*George Bush
*Tony Blair
*Michael Howard
*Racists

The usual shit that will bug most people here really.

Zarr, Thursday, 17 March 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

And Chris Martin.

Zarr, Thursday, 17 March 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

Jimmy Mod Has Returned With Spices And Silks (ModJ), Thursday, 17 March 2005 02:34 (twenty years ago)

Plus, I worked for the league for a few years, and I watched him forge his wife's name on checks

Well, um, I'll give you that one! And he was probably the force behind the untenable expansion. And while it's certainly the owners' fault that they've let salaries get out of hand, don't you think the players are being rather unreasonable? I haven't studied the teams' books, but the players are making NBA money in a league that's pulling in a lot less than NBA revenue.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 17 March 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

I'll concede that no problem -- I do think the bulk of the blame lies on him and on him as he relates to the owners tho. And I never forgave him for the previous lockout anyway, so as far as I'm concerned, someone has to take the fall -- I wish they'd just put Gretz in charge like they want to and get it over with...

Jimmy Mod Has Returned With Spices And Silks (ModJ), Thursday, 17 March 2005 02:39 (twenty years ago)

I dunno--listening to Gretzky and Lemieux lately sounds like they've made a pretty complete transition from player to owner...
