complain about them

anthonyeaston, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hardly seems worthwhile since they're all going bust.

Tom, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They'd better at least last for my upcoming trips and jaunts, dammit.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like British Airways, they gave me a world traveller plus seat when it was new and they wanted to promote it! Cathay Pacific is good, because you could get noodles any time you wanted. A shame I didn't.

Bill, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My Go flight from Glasgow was an hour late last night. Luckily, I'd booked an earlier flight than usual, otherwise I would have missed to train into London and had to pay approximately £55. Ryan Air are worse though. Next time I go to Glasgow, it is by coach.

Madchen, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

£55 for a taxi, I mean

Madchen, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha ha! Coach is even worse! Oh, sorry.

Ally C, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Economy class wine in plastic cups. Getting 50 rolls of film hand checked. Getting blown up.

R.S., Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

five years pass...
Reviving because British Airways wants to charge you £240 for bringing an extra bag.

Between that and the general chaos surrounding flying through Heathrow, why would anyone fly them anymore?

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 8 February 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

On the other hand, my LAX/ZRH/FCO flight on Swiss International was terrific.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 8 February 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

i just got an email from virgin atlantic saying that the passenger tax to London is doubling from 20 to 40 pounds for economy class. ouch

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 8 February 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

i just a 700-dollar flight from LA to Milan for march from continental! i have nothing to complain about!

max (maxreax), Thursday, 8 February 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

I can usually find cheap flights on USAirways, but they ALWAYS lose my luggage.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Thursday, 8 February 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

yeah US Air is my least favorite domestic airline. worse than even AirTran.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 8 February 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

Their prop planes are terrifying. Well, all prop planes are terrifying. On their 747s, they do have a few TV screens with UBER lame trivia, which is better than Southwest, who has nothing. Oh, and if your flight gets delayed, and you've got to connect, they're really nice about getting you on another flight with whomever, whereas Southwest can say, "screw you."

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Thursday, 8 February 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

That is Uk.gov upping the tax. BA sucked up the increase for those who booked before it was announced. Virgin surcharged everyone.

BA is still my number one choice flying out of London, crazy baggage rules or no, just because they fly more places I need to get to, direct. Virgin sucks.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 8 February 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

i like BA, but since I have American Airlines miles, even though they're part of the One World Alliance, or whatever, you cant accrue miles on BA transatlantic flights.. which i think is the only reason i'd be flying BA, since inter-europe flights are so cheap on like ryanair/etc.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 8 February 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

Please don't fly the ryanair, any other budget airline, but not ryanair. The owner is a grade one arsehole. (also take the train within europe it is better)

Ed (dali), Thursday, 8 February 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

ok air berlin then.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 8 February 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

Fine by me, I have no idea who owns it as he doesn't get on the TV once a week being an arsehole.

(Seriously though, train is good, I will show you how to get it cheap)

Ed (dali), Thursday, 8 February 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

cheap is what i like. i have to go in april to europe on some Street Peeper business to like London, Paris, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Berlin, Copenhagen, Milan, Barcelona on a whirlwind trip, and am afraid of all the travel costs.... trying to work out how to get in between cities. though i might just cut half of it out and do the other half in early summer.. but transatlantic fights are so $$$ in summer - i should sign up for more credit cards to get miles.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 8 February 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

Sadly Ed, if I want to go and visit my brother, who lives besides Stansted, I have no choice but to fly Ryanair. They are the only airline that flies there from Dublin. Although next time I am taking the ferry and bringing the dogs.

Even more sadly, that shitface Michael O'Leary wants to buy Aer Lingus too, and there will be no way to get out of Ireland without giving him money.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 8 February 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

May be an idea to get a rail pass. 15 day global Eurail pass is $538. Although that doesn't cover the eurostar. why they don't do a cheaper 2nd class one I don't know. There are all kinds of options. You get cheaper prices for being non-european. http://www.raileurope.com/.

xpost, you must swim.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 8 February 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

Any tips/tricks for finding cheap airfare between Memphis and Amsterdam this September? Current best option is booking directly with Northwest, $830 or so.

Tuesdays With Morimoto (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 8 February 2007 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

Amsterdam is convention heavy in september. Could try flying to Paris and then take the train (direct from the airport)

Ed (dali), Thursday, 8 February 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

Oh shit, I'm supposed to be looking for our accommodation! What am I doing dossing around here?

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 8 February 2007 20:17 (eighteen years ago)

I can't say anything -- Americans exporting jobs to the Irish that we're not willing to do, etc...

Tuesdays With Morimoto (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 8 February 2007 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

All sorted. Back to bitching about airlines.

Actually, getting the train to Amsterdam would be cool.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 8 February 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

I fly because I don't have *time* to take the train. Also, cheap airlines be, well, cheap.

Ryanair's a bit crap, yes, due to gazillion miles between airport and actual destination. BA is great though, I've NEVER had a problem with them (ditto easyJet for teh cheapness)

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 8 February 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

easyjet flies into Amsterdam cheaply from the UK, RockHardy, you could try flying to the UK first?

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 8 February 2007 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

I do realise that being in London I am five hours closer to the european rail network than you alisa. But if you are in London, you really need a good reason not to take the train.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 8 February 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

Really good reason = it would take me like two days rather than two hours to go visit my parents, and when I only have a week off work, I'd rather spend it doing things that aren't sitting on a train. Also, it costs less. It's a lovely idea in principle, but I just can't see me putting it into practice very often, not until I can afford long holidays that cost more.

(or learn to put up with a caravan in Skeggie for the summer)

What are some airlines for U.S. domestic flights that I should avoid or that I should consider using?

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 12 May 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

(Philadelphia to Albuquerque and back, if it makes any difference.)

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 12 May 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

avoid the MD-80, it's always crashing

wanko ergo sum, Saturday, 12 May 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

OH, I thought you meant aircraft

wanko ergo sum, Saturday, 12 May 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

the route (and time) definitely makes a difference, and the aircraft may matter more than the airline (personally, I'd rather not fly on anything much smaller than a 737, ie not too much below 100 seats). is this a reputational question? personally, i'd say American is usually the safe default choice for domestic, but they also happen to be the most convenient and maybe cheapest option for most of the limited flying I do. Continental has a good reputation, and in my experience, they've seemed pleasant and service-oriented (corporate/middle American flavor).

you can probably answer your own question best by going to the airline websites and plugging in your travel dates/times and seeing what's available/evaluating what's best for you in terms of departure/arrival times, price, total travel time, connection time/distance (for a short connect) or connection location/imagined food quality/diversity (for a lenthy one), and aircraft. I don't think anyone flies direct from Philly, though Continental goes direct from Newark.

gabbneb, Saturday, 12 May 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

you want to look at American, United, Continental, Delta, US Air/America West, and Southwest

gabbneb, Saturday, 12 May 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

oh, and Northwest

gabbneb, Saturday, 12 May 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

and personally wrt US Air, I'd mostly stick to the America West ops (via Phoenix and Vegas)

gabbneb, Saturday, 12 May 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

I was looking for airline recommendations or warnings, just because now and then I hear: "Don't fly [such and such]," but I haven't really kept track. Anyway, I booked my flights with Delta. No, nobody seems to go directly from Philadelphia to Albuquerque. I don't feel like bothering with getting to Newark (no car), so I'll take the layovers instead.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 12 May 2007 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

Only imperialists complain about air travel.

admrl, Saturday, 12 May 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

You're right, I should walk instead.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 12 May 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

What are some airlines for U.S. domestic flights that I should avoid or that I should consider using?

Pretty much all the airlines have the same rough amenities at this stage, which is to say that none of them have any. The difference in service between Southwest and the olden carriers is that with American you have the chance to pick your seat ahead of boarding. You can forget getting a meal on pretty much any flight within the continential US, unless you want to pay for it. The worst airplanes, by FAR, are the 757s. They've been designed for no comfort and maximum seating capacity. A flight on Continental's or AA's is a hundred times worse than any AirTran DC9, JetBlue AB319, or Southwest 737.

Ultimately, what matters most these days is where you're flying out of and through. I'd rather fly Northwest than United west because I'd much, much rather connect in Detroit or Minnesota than the pits of hell (Atlanta and Chicago O'Hare). The Southwest "aircoach," as I like to call it, usually makes a few stops on its way to Seattle or LAX. Last time I went to Los Angeles, I stopped in Baltimore, Tulsa, and Albequerque before getting there. If you plan on a lot of travel, find out who flies most often out of your local airport and get a Frequent Flier account with them. If you get a couple upgrades out of it, then you'll see an appreciable difference in service.

I also was pretty happy with Air Berlin when I flew them last month. Piece of cake, and more comfortable than Southwest's 737s. I've heard some nasty stories about Ryanair, and I've also heard a few people excuse it because, hey, its fucking cheap.

godsonsafari, Saturday, 12 May 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, flying for like 29 pounds roundtrip from london to berlin and back you will put up with a lot.

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 13 May 2007 02:14 (eighteen years ago)

I'm reasonably happy with Continental, even considering that 90% of my flights are on the much-maligned Embraer 135/145 regional jets; I've found them pretty comfortable and safe. The no-assigned-seat thing on Southwest is a deal-breaker for me.

Godonsafari OTM above re: connecting through ATL/ORD. The NW hubs in MSP and DTW are your best bets if you must connect in the midwest.

Jeff Wright, Sunday, 13 May 2007 03:15 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, and www.flyertalk.com for all the pros/cons/ins/outs of airlines and frequent flyer programs.

Jeff Wright, Sunday, 13 May 2007 03:18 (eighteen years ago)

Flyertalk is where its at. It alerted me to the $266RT fare Continental ran from Newark to Cologne for the spring, and I was absolutely all over it. I like using NW for the reasons of connecting airports and such, plus the Skyteam Alliance working with Delta and Continental is a big plus.

I do fly Southwest when I travel to the DC area out of necessity though. It was a $128 for the exact flights I wanted round trip after tax. I can check in 24 hours before and get in boarding group A, and I'm okay with that.

(I should also note: Now that exit rows are being cordoned off and sold separately for more money, it actually makes the discount guys like Southwest look a fraction better. I really want to see what the first reports from Skybus end up being like, because their prices are CRAZY)

godsonsafari, Sunday, 13 May 2007 03:53 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, flying for like 29 pounds roundtrip from london to berlin and back you will put up with a lot.

This is all well and good until you reach the point that we have reached in Ireland, where Ryanair is the only airline you can use to fly to a whole range of destinations where before there was some choice. Now, if I want to go to Stanstead airport, I've got no option but to stand in a scrum with a bunch of people who would happily kill me to get a seat, so that I can have people try to sell me scratch cards. I hate it. It puts me off going places.

accentmonkey, Sunday, 13 May 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

the pits of hell (Atlanta and Chicago O'Hare)

Shit, I'm going to be connecting in Atlanta.

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 13 May 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

i guess an added one being that you dont have to pay the checked bag fee anymore...

phil-two, Friday, 6 June 2008 20:34 (seventeen years ago)

american used to (still does?) have this program where you could earn points at select restaurants around town if you paid with a registered card. my old local was one of those places and i'd pay my bar tab with my debit card and earn points that way. originally it was one point per dollar spent then it went up to 3 for one then 5 for one and by the time i stopped drinking there it was up to 10 points per dollar. i can all but guarantee you i got a trip to memphis out of using my debit card to pay my bar bill.

In reference to the delayed Krakow -> Glasgow flight discussed above, I sent a letter off to the Ryanair Compensations department a couple of weeks ago (I figured that for the price of a stamp it was hardly a big waste). If I ever hear back from my missive into the void I'll return here.

two months pass...

so my flight is listed as delayed by 4 hours on the Continental website - I called and they said 'it's recommended you arrive by the originally scheduled departure time, then just wait"

it's about a 2 hour drive to the airport, should I go to the airport and wait 4 hours like some shmuck or should I sit home and twiddle my thumbs and live DANGEROUSLY CLOSE to the edge?

a being that goes on two legs and is ungrateful (dyao), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 14:33 (sixteen years ago)

If they move it up without leaving you time to make the drive, when is the next flight to yr destination today? On the route I usually fly, there might only be two plans per day going there, and they could be full already. In which case, go the airport.

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 14:38 (sixteen years ago)

yeah.

Mark G, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 14:40 (sixteen years ago)

it'll be tomorrow - flying internationally to Hong Kong. my flight's about half empty though, which makes me suspicious that they're trying to cram it full at the last moment by delaying it for 4 hours.

also the reasons given is 'maintenance,' I'm just going to wonder out loud right now whether or not that means my plane will go up in flames as soon as it lifts off, just to jinx the possibility of that event actually happening

a being that goes on two legs and is ungrateful (dyao), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 14:40 (sixteen years ago)

Maintenance, my arse. You are right, CO want a full plane if they're flying to HKG.

King Boy on Parole (King Boy Pato), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 10:33 (sixteen years ago)

Do Continental have online check-in yet? If so, do that and turn up for the later scheduled time - if not, you'll have to bite the bullet just in case (because they'll make it INCREDIBLY hard for you to get on another flight/refund your money if it takes off as usual) and loudly demand food and beverage vouchers. And ask for access to the airline lounge if you're feeling bold.

King Boy on Parole (King Boy Pato), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 10:35 (sixteen years ago)

three months pass...

so this morning delta sent me an email with the subject, 'Your Itinerary Has Changed'.
they've moved my outgoing flight up 45 min, which is fine, bc it's still essentially the same flight, but my return flight now has a 2nd connection, through minneapolis, which i painstakingly avoided in my original planning so that i would not risk getting stuck in a snow storm.
what the fuck???

tehresa, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

That is some bullshit, IMO, and they should owe you a future upgrade or vouchers for that.

CONSIDER THIS: I missed my direct flight, and was NOT ALLOWED to re-route to a flight with a connection, even though it would have been a downgrade in level of service. They FORCED me to wait for a direct flight so they wouldn't have to pay airport fees for an extra passenger (<---me).

Now they're FORCIBLY downgrading your flight from the one you paid for, also to save themselves money (they probably consolidated two not-full flights) -- by no fault of your own.

I think you shd pwn them.

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 18:52 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i'm just figuring out how. there is NO reason i should be taking 3 planes to get back here. in fact, i booked my return out of charlotte to avoid that!!!!

i'm sure it's in the fine print somewhere that they can change all this but that is drastically altering my trip! last year they couldn't even get me home when they kept canceling my flights. now they want me to just hop all over the country? seriously, it would be charlotte-memphis-minneapolis-seattle. that is insane.

tehresa, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 18:55 (fifteen years ago)

i am so sick of air travel. they keep charging more and more and more and then think they can jerk you around however they please? and really, they can, because you are dependent upon them to get you wherever. ugh.

tehresa, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 18:57 (fifteen years ago)

It's way more useful to make a fuss at the airport, because they want to minimize embarrassment. You might be stuck with the extra layover, but you should be able to get some credit or return for it, I think.

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

On the other hand, call them up and say, screw you, have you SEEN this itinerary?? Maybe they can re-route.

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 19:14 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i kind of want them to fix it now before we get into crazy holiday travel zone. but my guess is they won't do anything. sigh.

tehresa, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 19:15 (fifteen years ago)

If you have the time to go to the airport before the crazy Thanksgiving stuff starts, you'll probably get more help from an agent in person than over the phone.

Jaq, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 19:21 (fifteen years ago)

It think the general general Ts&Cs of airline tickets is that they guarantee to get you from A to B is you fulfil certain requirements like turing up and checking in at the allotted time but beyond that nothing is guaranteed, not a seat not a timing, not a number of stops, not even take off.

Things are a little better in europe where they are obliged by law to compensate you in cash (not vouchers) if the deny you boarding on the the flight you booked, re route you or take off excessively late.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 19:27 (fifteen years ago)

Er, they're not going to give you any compensation. Not in a billion years. As ED said, they are guaranteeing to get you from A to B - unfortunately, it doesn't matter how many flights you are now forced to take getting from A to B.

Anyway, I've seen worse from DL.

The Velvet Underground & Nico Rosberg (King Boy Pato), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 21:42 (fifteen years ago)

they canceled my original connection, i'm guessing, and now have me rerouted on the last flights of the day, which will totally screw me if there are any delays. there are more workable options available w/in their flights schedule so i think i'm going to call and demand they give me one of those.

tehresa, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 21:45 (fifteen years ago)

One consolation with DL is that, in my experience, you always make the last flight connections because the connecting flight is always later than the one you are coming off. COming back to pittsburgh on the last DL from atlanta I have never had it be less than 3 hours late leaving ATL, even in good weather.

I realise that this is scant consolation and don't envy your cross country trek next week.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 22:02 (fifteen years ago)

tehresa, Saturday, 21 November 2009 23:35 (fifteen years ago)

this worked out amazingly. i think i was originally leaving from CLT because it was cheaper, but since CLT is less than 100 miles from GSP i could get my changed flight out of GSP, through ATL with direct flight from ATL to SEA :D :D :D so i'm probably getting a more expensive but more efficient trip now than i was originally when i would have driven to CLT and had a layover in memphis! and they said there is no charge because the change is due to their schedule changes. ask and you shall receive :)

Airlines advice: My folks are flying round trip California to London. There are similarly priced tickets on United and Continental, with nearly identical itineraries (via Dulles in D.C.).

Which airline would you go with?

Becky Facelift, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 00:02 (fifteen years ago)

the last Continental flight I took was pretty cool - each seat had a built-in LCD screen monitor on the headrest, and you could choose from about a hundred movies to watch. also they had regular power sockets so you didn't need to buy an expensive empower converter.

going non-native (dyao), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 00:16 (fifteen years ago)

i'd choose continental as well. i mean, ppl are gonna have bad stories abt every airline. me, i've had good luck with continental from the west coast to europe-surprising lot of empty seats on my flights

I had a terrible flight with Continental so I have 2x $200 vouchers to use.. but for every flight I look up on kayak etc, Continental are more than $200 dearer than the cheaper airlines! This seems... wrong?
