This old idea is finally happening. And it looks like it will start off as a gimmicky guided tour in virtual reality land.
However, I can see this being the future of laser tag, and fucking fun at that.

Laser projectile beams (like star wars).
Cool environments, obviously. Maybe try that steam gimmick.
Also, design your own character.
