Personals Ads: Classic or Dud?

Okay, so I was reading the personals on a certain website, which I do for entertainment at times, and lo! I found ads by not one but *two* people I know quite well. I know it's them, but they are probably too embarrassed to tell me. I thought it rather sweet, actually - they're both dandy charming fellas.

I'm leery of this sort of thing myself, since I've had some just plain bad experiences with online friendships that turned real-life. But I'm curious - what do you think of these things? Have you ever taken out a personal or answered one? Would you?

I apologize if this has been asked already: I couldn't find it in the archives.

I've never felt the desire to answer a personal ad. It's hard to gauge someone based on their vital statistics - what is this, D&D or real life? A charisma of 18? Hubba hubba! Is that a +2 sword in my pants? Maybe...

Placing a personal ad, personally = dud. I'm not the type of person that could consolidate my better qualities into a few inches of newsprint. I'd prefer to leave my meetings with people up to pure chance (and getting an inkling of what makes them tick).

I've had much more luck w/ online relationships, in terms of friendship / not getting annoyed. The first one (back in the days of green-screen mainframe terminals) was a bugger - it involved this college student from Minneapolis that had issues w/ other online men she dealt with; oh boy - but since then, I've met quite the bevy of interesting, intelligent, "normal" people.

It's fascinating how people choose to represent themselves and what they're looking for. Most of them make me want to run away screaming. They also make me very grateful that I found someone and don't need that crap.

If I stumble across something like makeout club I usually put something up for a giggle. But nothing serious.

Oh, sure, that's why. I'm not being at all sarcastic, why would I be? I never am, not Ally.

Absolutely.

Oh, I'm turning into Nick. This thread has been done before.

Now for my next trick, I'll be posing with some Swedish semi-diposable office chairs and an imaginary table.
