the death of ILE

is it dying a slow death? i think so. look at the recent postings and the slim body of answers to them. a ghastly pallor if i've ever seen one.

ILM on the other hand is alove and well. indiephilia=case in point.

maybe this is because music is more important than everything else.

grim r., Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no, it's because of what has happened in Dunedin.

rainy, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Merely pre-Xmas blues. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

People are far too concerned with a. destroying ile b. the death of ile. Who the hell cares either way? Life goes on...

Nicole, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Red Rover, Red Rover, I call...

Kim, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what happened in dunedin?

unknown or illegal user, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I second Duanes question. what happened and why was I not privy to it?

Menelaus Darcy, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you probably were. it was probably your fucking fault.

unknown or illegal user, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

whatever it was.

unknown or illegal user, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bah. This happens all the time, it's merely a slow day.

DG, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe this kind of post, far from lucid, is killing ILE. I think a forum stays healthy if it is open and everyone understands what's going on.

But then "killing" is perhaps an inappropriate term. "Wounding" is better' because with a clear explanation (of what happened in Dunedin, for example) we can all see what's happening, allowing ILE to "heal" again.

MarkH, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

endless talk of supposed imminent death of something=proof said thing is alive and well

gareth, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ILE has always been entirely closed (i.e. you can't get to it from anywhere much) and I for one have barely ever been able to work out what's going on.

Tom, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

surely, you can access via google=most open site in world

gareth, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

endless talk of supposed imminent death of something=proof said thing is alive and well

Gareth, I take it this works for the NME and Poptones too, yeah? :)

Andrew Williams, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but of course!!

gareth, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

even if it was only the 6 or 7 of us, oh well. you never answered my question on there Andrew.

gareth, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's because I've been away. That and the Dunedin thing.

Nick, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

how was Dunedin, Nick?

gareth, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Ovah-head the stars are going OUT!!"

9 million names of blah, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you never answered my question on there Andrew.

It has been on my mind, but it seemed a bit pointless dragging it on. I just thought it was a bit odd that you seemed to be taking such delight in people losing their jobs, it seemed really out of character. Anyway, I think you're a cool guy, and I usually agree with what you say 99% of the time... apart from when you slag off Oasis, natch... :)

Andrew Williams, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

agreed re: the dragging it out, good call. it wasn't really joy at any jobs lost, more the raising of the subject as a way of stifling discussion (not by you i know!), and i didn't want that to happen

gareth, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Duane what the fuck are you talking about you putrid scrunched panty liner? this is schismatic behaviour I tell you! Any trouble resulting from my behaviour is always deliberate. you insult my art. I am going to introduce you to a world of pain little man

Menelaus Darcy, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what happened in dunedin = everyone took their exams and became sane again surely

how did you do menelaus?

mark s, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh I might as well share it with you all :)

I failed a paper for the first time ever, I feel so bohemian now. That was Pols 301 and the lectures were boring so I did nothing for it. Oh well, never mind.

However I did well in my dissertation and my other English paper - A's for both. Hoorah!

Menelaus Darcy, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hurrah! You can have your thunder back as a prize.

Nick, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"introduce me to a world of pain" - I believe we've already met.

unknown or illegal user, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's because the people on ILM are more interesting.

Ally, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aren't they the same people as are here? I don't go to ILM often b/c I don't like talking about music. Listening, yes. Typing about it online, not really.

I can't give long thoughtful posts here b/c I've been too busy lately. bleh. I still enjoy ILE though.

Samantha, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Have you been posting there recently Ally? Oh, that must be why...

Sarah, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Top reasons ILE is not dead -

Christmas present thread. Crying thread. Ellie's Adam Smith fanfic. Scary pop culture. 'Problem page' threads. ILE Office. Can we be friends? Shops and bands. Brown on brown. All good stuff I reckon.

Tom, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anyone read Alley Oop this week? Why is it all about Houdini? That new Bender guy drawing it sure is lousy.

1 1 2 3 5, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No need for reasons, I think it's clearly quite alive.

Ronan, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't it like mailing lists: it has moments when it's quiet and then suddenly it is really active. Worrying won't cure the *problem*.

helen fordsdale, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sad note: I had an ILE dream last night. Don't remember any details just know a dream-thread was involve and remember in particular reading posts from Anthony and Ned.

Samantha, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

of course ILE began to die when the working class writers, who had struggled to express their art, and to elucidate about the true nature of crisps, began to appeal to a middle class suburban audience. The original players of the ILE scene were torn, on how to deal with this new form of critical acceptance and the resultant financial rewards that some of them began to achieve. What had held them together in the ghetto now proved not be as succesful a social glue. Those that achieved commercial success, and regularly topped the statscock, found they couldn't draw the same inspiration as their material condition had altered, and they began to lose the respect of their peers, who could no longer see them as 'one of us'. The posters who didn't achieve such success became embittered and many had to travel to Europe to escape the harsh conditions.

Many contemporary critical observers argue that the early years of the ILE collective, before the drug problems became unwieldy, represent a high point of artistic endeavour, one that may never be reached, with the possible exception of Countryside. The final nail in the aesthetic and credibility coffin for many ILE posters proved to be the disastrous Jools Holland appearance, where the groovy piano man mistakenly called a key player Stuart Maconie

the historian, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

remember in particular reading posts from Anthony and Ned

I'm infesting your memory! I'm taking over your HEAD!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Its a bit late to vote for Gareth as best post, isn't it?

Will, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes it is. Any fool should know not to release important things in this period.

Nick, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Woah! ILE is nit dying! There are like 30 new questions everyday when I log on! And, the difference between here and ILM is that ILM threads can become really involved and it's hard to just jump in. So, ILE is not dying and if it does, that would be a shame.

james, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I DID IT!!!! it was me.

di, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

must you take all the credit mene?

di, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Duane I haven't even got started with you, I'm going to make you scream like a little girl at a britney spears concert

Menelaus Darcy, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh all right then Di, you can have all the credit. All that Dunedin angst was getting tedious anyway :)

Menelaus Darcy, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I had my first IL* dream on the weekend. It was surprising, which is all I am gonna tell ya.

Kim, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i escaped dunedin angst but theres nothing else to do in Kaitaia so i'm on the internerd. yeah my exams went well thanks for asking.

hamish, BSc, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But Rainy's right, though, that was the main reason

maryann, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

of course a number of cultural commentators argue that some of the leading lights of the ile collective, began to feel that they were held back by the very nature of the collective, and that they could not express their individuality as they were held back by the weaker and less talented members. at this point it was inevitable that these leading lights began to demand a higher percentage of the royalties than in the relatively egalitarian set up that they had put in place in the early days.

many of the lesser members believed this was unfair, even though their solos were weaker and of shorter duration, but at the same time, they realised that they needed the sheer force of personality of the more talented members if they were going to be able to partake fully in the rewards of their endeavour.

the tensions that began to dog the ilx massive at this point seemed almost unresolvable as the strongest members pulled in differeing directions, eager to take the collective to ever higher planes in order to realise their vision, and some became frustrated by the limitations of the lower and more mundane players. many wondered how the collective could survive the artistic clashes of this period. fortunately the introduction of a really large Kate Thornton robot pulled the players in the same direction. "that Abba record, it would get even your nerdy uncle on the dancefloor" it would utter, and the ilx players became transfixed by the single flashing light and the television voice, and harmony was restored.

the historian, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well that depends which Abba record you're talking about.

Pedantic Person, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
