WONDER SHOWZEN

Okay so remember this clip that was circulating the internet up to like 2-3 years ago called "kids show" which was like sesame street except with such as horses taking a shit and clowns vomiting on birthday cakes and the like? YES. it was awesome.
So through a stroke of huge luck because I don't have cable I happened to be at a friend's house who has MTV2 the other day and there was this show on called "Wonder Showzen" and it turns out that kids show clip was a pilot, and and I guess MTV2 finally decided to pick up the series (maybe they have these things planned out long ahead of time and they were like "hey by the year 2005 we will be able to get away with showing this on television so hold on") so now I have to figure out how I'm going to watch this show religiously and not have to get cable.
It's sort've like half captain kangaroo and half Concrete TV. yeah that's rad isn't it

Dan I. (Dan I.), Monday, 21 March 2005 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The best part is when they involve actual kids like there's this kid interviewing some adult and as the adult goes into a long involved answer to the kid's question the child is holding up a little sign to the camera saying "MORON". If I'm remembering right.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Monday, 21 March 2005 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The disturbing:funny ratio of this show is about 8:1. I still don't know what to think about the episode that ends with them eating God.

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Monday, 21 March 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

OTM. I saw that clip last night. I would have loved this stuff in high school, though. I thought MTV2 was created so they could actually show videos? Now all it is is programs too weird for MTV1, and ten shows featuring the guys from Jackass.

daria g (daria g), Monday, 21 March 2005 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I still don't know what to think about the episode that ends with them eating God.

I MUST SEE THIS NOW.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 21 March 2005 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

YES.
This show is way better than videos. I want a channel made entirely of shows like this.

Oh man, I got the first seven episodes of this on bit.torrent, and I think this might be the greatest television show ever.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 13 May 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

The puppet performing a sex change operation ON HIMSELF made me nauseous. The numbers / letters Arab / Jew gangwar / manlove (w/ the smelly hippy puppet) was more my speed. Puppet humping = awesome.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 13 May 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

The slaves! (Built the pyramids...Built America!) song in the number/ letter gang war episode was great. I am fond of the songs and Clarence, not so fond of the random blood in toilet/man chewing on own hand stuff. That said: CHOOTIES

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 13 May 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Oh! And when S and N had mad raunchy puppet sex, and N gave birth to a lowercase i, so their family portrait spells out SiN = awesome!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 May 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

so is this on tonight or what? I tuned in to MTV last Friday at 10 and 11 and was met with the usual reality show bullshit.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 13 May 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

has anyone seen the Patience episode? omg. it's really a test of patience. for about 10 minutes straight, they have that blue puppet interupting a guy trying to say "remember kids, you've got to have patience". finally they say, "we're sorry for wasting your time for the past 15 minutes. we're going to give you back those 15 minutes of your life by playing the entire episode backwards." and they do it! i was so grateful i had tivo so i could fastforward through it.

I think it's on at 9:30 EST. And it's on MTV2, not MTV.

kirsten (kirsten), Friday, 13 May 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

I know its an MTV2 production - but it DID get aired on MTV more than once at some point, because that's where I saw it. Whether or not that was part of regular programming or just a "preview" or something, I don't know...

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 13 May 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

i set my tivo to record all new episodes of it and it looks like they only have three episodes on air for a while, "Space", "Ocean" and something else.

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 13 May 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Oh, well, I don't have MTV. I just know that new episodes are on MTV2 at 9:30 Eastern on Fridays.

kirsten (kirsten), Friday, 13 May 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

Space and Ocean are both good.

9:30 cannot come soon enough.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Friday, 13 May 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

One of my favorite things about Wonder Showzen is that when the blue puppet is bugging people, the people get pissed at the PUPPET and yell at the PUPPET and try to hit the PUPPET and not the person whose hand the puppet is on.
I thought this was supposed to be a new one, though. It's not.

kirsten (kirsten), Saturday, 14 May 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

Aside from a lot of gore, cartoon and real, I love this show, just having seen this last night... this is what happens when a show fuses sugar syrup concentrate, surrealism, and shock value. Not to hip on the latter, but I can deal with the former two attributes.

I haven't seen the Patience episode, but I have seen the eating God episode. That was amazing.

The most LOLtastic thing I've seen is:

DOQQUN (donut), Monday, 15 May 2006 22:50 (nineteen years ago)

the Patience episode is maybe the best one in terms of structural WE ARE FUCKING WITH YOU genius. But some of the other episodes have better gags and sequences....

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 15 May 2006 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

Also, the best Beat Kids was when the kid went to the butcher shop. The guy who ran the butcher shop, or the actor thereof, was PERFECT. Also, the scene where the kid drinks the residual cow blood off the white styrofoam tray was brilliant if completely fucking gross. I'm sure they used diluted kool-aid for the prop, but it looked incredibly real... then again...

It's that "then again" that's the key to the show. How many of the blocked faces that Clarence has confronted are actual real people filmed for the show, or are they actors/actresses pretending to be irrate people on the street? You never know.

DOQQUN (donut), Monday, 15 May 2006 22:55 (nineteen years ago)

the Patience episode is maybe the best one in terms of structural WE ARE FUCKING WITH YOU genius.

The structural aspect is my very favorite thing about the show, which is why the "patience" episode is my favorite. The gags themselves are never quite as good as the unpredictable shock cut "did I really just see that?" result of the delivery. There's just a great sense of pacing and control to the show that I see as more cinematic than most anything else on television.

Chatman: After the show got picked up, we wanted a few more main puppets, so we could have more story lines and have a little team of characters. We found this guy who’d made puppets for Sesame Street. He had a big shock of white hair and this crazy workshop down in the Lower East Side, and he did really good work. But after 35 years of glue inhalation, his brain was gone. He got mad about a shade of color we wanted for a puppet and threw us out of the studio.

We discovered the world of puppet people is really weird. They were so offended that we were not professionally trained: “Who are going to be your puppeteers?” And we were like, “We’re going to do it ourselves. Don’t you just open your hand?”
