Grissom's kiss-off: "Maybe we were meant to change gender at will. And being born with just one sex is a mutation."

!!!

it starred my lovely lindsay crouse as a cross-sex viet vet activist illegal gender surgeon and group therapist called BENWAY!! (that's a burroughs ref except this benway is a TRAGICALLY BUNGLING PIRATE IDEALIST rather than a cynical hack a per burroughs)

benway's husband dna ends up in the mouth of the victim cz he just sucked his wife's dick and he spits when he is angry!!

everyone in the entire csi team (except grissom obv) went around like this the whole ep

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

grissom kinks em then horatio straightens em back out again

lots of people were, mark

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

Sigh. I heart Grissom.

I nearly fell off the bed laughing when they started talking about DOKTOR BENWAY - that was a great wink to Burroughs.

The "how to make a vagina" bits were one of the few bits on CSI that did actually make me squeamish. It takes a lot of forensics to ick me out, but that did it.

I was *really* hoping that Benway's husband would turn out to be a female to male cross-gender. Now that would have been the ultimate twist. But alas, no.

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

yes but she is LINDSAY CROUSE!

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 09:38 (twenty years ago)

"The Equalizer" as "Sarah McGee"

This is setting off a dim echo in the back of my brain, and I went googling to see if it's because I remember that as a particularly brilliant episode of the Equalizer -- but all I found was repetition of the IMDB listing, and all I'm left with is a phantom memory of Ewa Woowa barking out the name "Sarah McGee" all stacatto.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

it wz "how to make a vagina with a wire hanger and a toothpaste tube"!! i had so repressed that!! it was done in a storage facility in hommage to "silence of the lambs"

they had already used up that idea as a joke, kate: the black woman csi person whose name i don't know said it to sarah, who did her screwy-up-face which means "why are you still talking? go away!" and the black woman said "oh! overshare!" and walked away

in csi: miami the perp had a shelf full of forensics text books! and his wife said "they are DISGUSTING!! ..... oh! no offence!!"

(c5 had a fantastic run last night: a not-awful doc on the russian revolution w.surviving colour footage, anti-lenin but even more anti the tsar - "politically he was an idiot" said one professor - then csi ep 100, then csi: miami with CARUSO who i ph34r i adore though mileage may vary, then that donal macintyre underground doc on the fat gangster, which wz full of surprisin stuff, like the gangster in question bein UTTERLY COMFORTABLE WITH bein GAY and speaking perfect urdu!!)

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 09:58 (twenty years ago)

i saw this episode!! it was totally upsetting

also lindsay crouse was in david mamet's house of games. she is kinda boring

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

I actually fell asleep during the Russian Revolution (In Colour!) - and unfortunately missed the first five minutes of CSI.

I wasn't very impressed with CSI Miami, but then again, I rarely am.

And you missed out the BEST BIT OF THE EVENING, which was the repeat of HOT HOTT SUPER HOTTTT!!! Bonker Boris Johnson enthusing about the Turks (despite them assasinating his great grandfather). I was endlessly entertained by watching his hair do tricks. I wonder if he makes it do those things on purpose, or if it just grows that way. Sigh, swoon, phwoar, etc.

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

no!! slicki you are wrong!! EVEN IN HOUSE OF GAMES - which mamet being a MAN WITH A THEORY pitches at a strange monotone throughout - she has this excellent quizzical glow

i find her endlessly watchable: she is lowkey and chiselled and odd, and full of utterly private jokes and passions

i want to see EVERY SINGLE TV SHOW SHE HAS EVER BEEN IN, NOW!!

haha YES boris johnson!! i only saw a bit of that cz i wz makin myself supper but YES!! i totally didn't realise he had turkish ancestry, i thought "he must be doin this to big himself up as a convincing future minister of culture, interested in artefacts etc"

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

i even want to see slapshot!!!!

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:10 (twenty years ago)

sinker's "lindsay crouse" is my "penny smith."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:11 (twenty years ago)

No, I think Bonker Boris's enthusiasm for the Turks was actually quite genuine. In a "I am sure I am possibly related to Suleymaine and Tamburlane and therefore I could quite easily be a benevolent DESPOT TO RULE THE WORLD!!! I mean, Minister of Culture, oh yes" sort of way.

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

I liked what Paul Merton said about BJ: "He should be allowed to be Prime Minister! For one week!"

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

he is an odd fellow

i must admit i am fascinated by those pols who are doing a kind of LONG MARCH THROUGH THE TINY MEDIA approach to being returned in glory as tory leader: i still believe this this is portillo's plan (i know he has renounced all political ambition but feh!), but now boris also

it's like orwell except w.big brother hosting FLOG IT!

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

I thought his plan was to impregnate as many women as possible with slightly rumpled blond Tory-Voting Johnson clones for a future army to take over Britain.

I would surely volunteer for this breeding programme!

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

xposts sorry what I have to say has nothing to do with Boris Johnson.
Like Kate, it also takes a lot of forensics to ick me out, and this episode finally succeeded like no other CSI has before. And did anyone else notice that the husband/suspect in CSI Miami was the same dude who played the principal in the last season of Buffy? It has become a (-n annoying) game with me to say "that's the dude/lady who was in ________!" while watching these shows.

(I heart Grissom. I even now heart the rest of the staff, incl. Sara even though I didn't like her for so long, and my mother exclaimed, "that woman looks like a grouper!" and then made a grouper-face when she first saw the show, so that I still think of Sara's character as grouper-woman. But affectionately.)

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

God, I don't know how you people keep track of all these character actors!

It's terrible; I have trouble recognising the same character actor within the same episode unless they are re-introduced when they enter ("Now we are going to be interrogating the husband/suspect") let alone when they appear as different characters in different programs. I sometimes wonder if I have some kind of face-dyslexia.

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

Dammit! WHY didn't I remember to set the video recorder? I heart Grissom loads. David Caruso can sod off though, ginger black-shirt-wearing mopemeister.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

I used to be good at picking out the character actors in Babylon 5, though. And that was even more difficult because they were usually dressed as aliens. But then again, my housemate used to keep track of them and point them out for me.

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

sgs YES i spotted that!!

to me this project is no game, but the gradual revealing of a vast secret plot we do not yet understand!! yes i do live on my own!!

when will they pitch CSI: SUNNYDALE? if horation can blither on about how bathroom mould has unique DNA then it is time we got electron microscope close-ups of vamp dust!!

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

Mark S, you mentalist. CSI: Sunnydale is the sort of crossover madness that would send fan fict writers into a FRENZY.

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:41 (twenty years ago)

xpost Indeed! and weapons POVs. I'm a little surprised now to think that there was never a show (or maybe there was and I missed it?) about the sunnydale PD and their coping mechanisms.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

end times now!! end times now!!

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

end guardian now more like!!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe I missed this. Actually I can cos too often with CSI we make the baby dance to the theme tune and then I drift away to do something less interesting during the first ad break. Last night I was out boozing. I must ask Pam all about it...

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

the sunnydale cops appeared now and then: i think extended stuff wz all trio-related

(eg when warren killed his gf and later when willow wz on post-tara rampage and the other two were in the cells and had to be rescued from her wrath)

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

mark s and sgs should collaborate on scripting CSI: Sunnydale!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

Yes, but can they work in Boris Johnson as some kind of avenging sexx demon?

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 11:01 (twenty years ago)

i really want anthony's comment upthread to be true but really i think csi teaches middle america about kink/queer theory about as much as The Dukes Of Hazard teaches about drug-smuggling moonshiners

jones (actual), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

LOST is CSI: Bermuda Triangle
-- nickalicious (nickaliciou...), March 18th, 2005.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
am surprised nobody has mentioned this weeks' episode, 'Who Shot Sherlock?'

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 14 April 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

That's because it was cheesy. But passable. For once, Miami was slightly more interesting (radioactive chemicals injected into orange juice bottle!).

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 14 April 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

it wz v.poor is why!!

tho i did like the bit where the black kool-d00d CSI and the henry rollins CSI made a lifesize rubber mannequin out of expensive gunk and the blonde ex-lapdancer CSI wz aghast at their nerdiness as it wobbled in the jeepseat in the background

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 14 April 2005 10:37 (twenty years ago)

It was quite sweet when they told young apprentice CSI he'd passed his CSIing test though.

lock robster (robster), Thursday, 14 April 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

and the trans-sexual thing wasn't cheesy?

the accents, the gun on elastic, the amazing gelatine man = entertainment

> radioactive chemicals injected into orange juice bottle!

ha, one of my favourite bits - they zoom in to an atomic level!

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 14 April 2005 11:01 (twenty years ago)

You could see the gun on elastic coming a mile off, also that the waitress did it. They could have made a bit more effort to make it as puzzling as a real Holmes mystery.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 14 April 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

real holmes mysteries are almost never backformed by obsessive holmes fans so as to be mysteries: this wz potentially a nice idea lamely executed i think (they were too plzed w.selves as "holmes nerds")

but i liked when brass "you can drop the british accent, now, chum", and the guy said "harder than you think, old fellow, i'm BRITISH!!" except but then he worked flippin burgers!

the trans-sexual ep wz WILD by comparison: as if scripted by pat califia

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 14 April 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
they did CSI: Balamory on Dead Ringers last week.

i keep making the mistake of making something to eat and sitting down to watch it only to have it start with a shot of, say, a time lapse sequence of maggots eating a guys face and suddenly i don't fancy this rice...

the burn victim from last week was spooky. is up there with Millennium at times.

koogs (koogs), Monday, 6 June 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

the CSI: Balamony thing was funny only for the same reasons that CSI is funny.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 6 June 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

somehow I stopped watching CSI. probably because we only have the NY and Miami one and I desperately want the Las Vegas CSI BACK.

nathalie's baby (stevie nixed), Monday, 6 June 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
Channel 5 is showing a CSI episode tonight, and claiming it was 'best ever CSI'

Does anyone know what this is all about?

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 1 July 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

NFT is showing the Tarantino Ep. tonight I think.

robster (robster), Friday, 1 July 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

the tarantino ep is brilliant for taking the trademark CSI slow-motion gory moment-of-the-crime shot and stretching it out over an entire episode. otherwise it's extremely silly.

jones (actual), Friday, 1 July 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

ch5 are short of something else to show? this is just an excuse to show CSI 4 times a week rather than only 3 because it's popular. but yes, just cherrypicked repeats.

koogs (koogs), Friday, 1 July 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

it wz a poor ep also

classic cz sarah asks grissom on a date? pffft

mark s (mark s), Friday, 1 July 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

i think it was 'classic' because of the lab explosion (according to tivo episode guide). next week's is, er, i forget. oh, the Furries episode.

two "CSI: Proper"s on tuesday, maybe the season finale

koogs (koogs), Saturday, 2 July 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

the furries ep rivals the ep that caused this thread

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 2 July 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

i'm just disappointed that The Who didn't have time to do covers of all three CSI theme tunes in their set yesterday...

koogs (koogs), Sunday, 3 July 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

koogy did you see that WARRICK appeared on-stage in the canadian Live8, i think w.run dmc, and that (after further forensic investigation) we discovered that he has/had a london-based trip hop group called SMOKEY MIRRORS who apparently released some singles even

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

i crossed out "forensic investigation" so as to hilariously replace it w."googlin"

(haha or "kooglin")

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 3 July 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
So what do we think about the Tarantino ep?

I was excited at the time, but am left with a slightly disappointed feeling. I can't remember much of what happened. There was too much atmospherics, too much characterisation, not enough actual plot. And not nearly enough science. An hour's episode expanded out to two hours.

Though now I understand why they rescheduled it from last week. The thumb. Ick.

Though Stokes hallucinating his own autopsy was grate!

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 07:08 (twenty years ago)

I missed most of the first episode so i was little lost watching the 2nd one. I'm glad they didn't kill off little Nicky.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 07:16 (twenty years ago)

It felt a bit like Tarantino writing CSI fan fict rather than an actual episode.

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 07:19 (twenty years ago)

I enjoyed it, not sure why. I'll try and think of something during the course of the day.

But definitely wasn't what I was expecting.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 07:38 (twenty years ago)

I liked it overall (though had to look away/hold Mark's hand at times)... but the QT set pieces stuck out a bit much, best one I thought was the Sam Braun/Tony Curtis one. Dukes of Hazzard one was kinda too Royale w/Cheese for me. I loved the way Nick's situation was filmed/presented/interacted with over the whole thing, but there wasn't enough Sara Sidle! Also good was the fake they're-digging-him-out-he-can-hear-them-digging! bit--taunting us.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the "Ask me like your daddy" bit was creepy as fuX0r.

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:01 (twenty years ago)

it wz a trillion times lamer than the ep this thread wz started for

i. IT IS ONLY HENRY ROLLINS WE DO NOT CARE
ii. top Live8 star Warrick of trip hop's Smokin Mirrors is EVEN MORE tiresome when being mimpy than when bein "cool"
iii. fire ant action weak
iv. not explained why plexiglass cracked
v. forensic entomology detail unconvincingly localised ("yellow toad grasshoppers ONLY NEST in the backlots of burger kings mainly staffed by women")
vi. haha what if the line of clues only you can solve lead you not to yr colleague but a total CSI wipeout device!! MY PERFECT PLAN EVEN INCLUDES A SERENDIPITOUS INSECT INTRUSION I DIDN'T MYSELF THINK OF!! BWAHAHA!! YOU ARE ALL DOOMED IF AND ONLY IF SOMETHING HAPPENS I DIDN'T EXPECT!!

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:42 (twenty years ago)

Also, those had to be the strongest trousers on earth.

Are CSIs issued with special, steel reinforced belts?

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:43 (twenty years ago)

haha if it had ended w. just rollins's ripped empty trousers mournfully flapping it wd have redeemed all telly ever

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:46 (twenty years ago)

haha omg

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:49 (twenty years ago)

I did enjoy Rollins' whimpering (Good job, George Eads!) but yeah he should've at least been in traction afterwards. I agree Warrick's brattiness was annoying.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

Also i think the plexiglass cracked b/c of Nick's shooting out the light, though there did seem to be a bit of unexplained delay there.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

Warwick seemed to be acting quite out of character for much of the ep. Which annoyed me greatly. Ditto the total underuse of Sarah Sidle. Bah.

Rum, Sodomy and the LAN (kate), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 08:57 (twenty years ago)

bah why no microstructure CGI of plexiglass molecules straining and failing!!

actually i did like his dream of the autopsy ppl larfin and foolin as they cut him up --- but they shd have broken into song-and-dance a la SINGIN DETECTIVE

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 09:12 (twenty years ago)

I only saw the first two minutes. It looked a bit rubbish. Then again, I have never watched this programme. Or the X Files. Was that Henry Rollins who loomed up with the cheese wire?

Peter Stringbender (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

saw this a day after everyone else (after reading this thread, so was half expecting killer to be the real Henry Rollins, ha)

> MY PERFECT PLAN EVEN INCLUDES A SERENDIPITOUS INSECT INTRUSION I DIDN'T MYSELF THINK OF!! BWAHAHA!!

the killer didn't have much of a plan other than making one of them die whilst imprisoned. he obviously wasn't interested in the money. i think the big explosion was, er, actually, i don't know why. 'just in case'. didn't the non-insect clues narrow it down to a small enough sample to interate through?

wasn't very well explained just why those holes had traces of semtex, the whole triggering device and how, if it was a weight thing, it didn't go off when he was panicking (as anyone who's danced on bathroom scales can tell you).

didn't quite understand how he seemed to hear the people digging for him when they were actually digging up a dalmation several miles away.

not much in the way of cgi apart from the ants in part two. almost no fetishisation of the equipment (unlike QT's ER episode which was all shiny instruments)

the roy rogers thing didn't ring true, too much passion from gil. ditto the other tarantino bits. ('story' and 'direction' were by tarantino, writers were usual csi writers but i guess QT chipped in for the dialogue)

and no, NOT ENOUGH SARAH.

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:04 (twenty years ago)

eight months pass...
csi: nyc DOLLS HOSPITAL ep enters the pantheon i think

A: for this deduction -- there is METEORITE DUST in the vic's HERBAL TEA = she wz clearly poisoned by her VIOLIN VIRTUOSO neighbour
B: the bit where the girl in the caff swept up a dead rat and said brightly: "i feed them rat poison in scrambled egg!! so what would YOU like to eat?"
C: the clue to mom's sex-with-a-teen wz on the mutilated talking doll's broken recording tape
D: but mostly for the snowed-up nyc overhead shots which = pretty

I totally didn't expect this to be a thread about Lindsay Crouse. Awesome.

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 26 March 2006 17:26 (nineteen years ago)
