I remember Goldsmith running against whatsisname, David Mellor, in the election, and looking completely mad as he chanted as the results were called out revealing Mellor had lost. A scary man.

He made billions in breaking up companies and getting rid of lethargic directors who sit on their arses.

just watching The Mayfair Set, had forgotten what a repulsive shit-heel Goldsmith Sr was: "And here he was - James Goldsmith - the man who had enmeshed half of America. He sat with his legs crossed, chewing a cigar as fat as a factory chimney. His surroundings were nothing if not appropriate. Real Louis XV furniture, sculptures by Benvenuto Cellini. Only the bookshelves were rather empty - apart from a lonely couple of thrillers and a Stock Exchange handbook."

That reminds me, a friend of mine, formerly with the Met, was telling me recently how he had the misfortune to work with John Aspinall and, not only was he totally vile, but when he turned to face you realized half his face was missing (cancer, not a tiger or sumthin').

there seems to be endless footage of Goldsmith proselytising his vision of untramelled capitalism in a demented boggle-eyed manner from the 80's/90's. As vile as he is I actually hate the smug centrists more than him, at least he had the honesty to say his favoured brand of capitalism was cruel, ruthless + Darwenist and shit on many people.
