Dead man. Not of great interest. Sent everyone a terrible video before the 1997 election. Obituary here.

Nick, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Where's mine then?

mark s, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

His vid was just long enough to fit an episode of 'Larry Sanders' on. V useful.

Sorry - everyone except residents of Hackney, Mark. He wasn't a complete mug.

The Referendum Party: the most stupid rich man's plaything of all time?

Nick, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Its weird - his son Zac is some major eco-warrior. Guilty little rich boy?

Wil, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

JG's brother = big-time eco agitator also; poss.of the human-cull-now brigade, i don't know

I have a friend who actually voted for the Referendum Party in 1997. She normally votes Tory, so she probably helped Blair get in, hur hur.

Mark - yeah, I think there's a shading between Goldsmith family eco-interest and old Jimmy's monstrous friend Aspinall, part of the whole scene beautifully explained in BBC2's The Mayfair Set a couple of years ago. That's really what you need Anthony, but how you would go about getting it I don't know.

Aspinall = private zoo = "My tiger ate a keeper? Less prole scum huzzah!!"

Goldsmith was a crony of Lord Lucan. I heard it suggested that he had been one of the people hiding LL, and his death was likely to smoke him out. No such luck.

I remember Goldsmith running against whatsisname, David Mellor, in the election, and looking completely mad as he chanted as the results were called out revealing Mellor had lost. A scary man.

Referendum Party vote helped Lib Dems to overturn Tories in bastard William "Computer? Countryside? Burn the fucker!" Rees Mogg's home constituency Somerton & Frome = CLASSIC.

That video he sent everyone - it said on the cover "If you care about Britain, please post this video through your neighbour's postbox after you have finished watching it." I recorded over it with 15 minutes of Police Academy and meant to post it in our neighbour's house the day after, but never did. This would have been a really funny ancedote if I had learnt to get off my arse and do stuff back then.

three weeks pass...
Good boy Jimmy was a great man. He made billions in breaking up companies and getting rid of lethargic directors who sit on their arses. What's wrong with that? He turned eco-friendly later on. He had a soul and a heart, and was a more interesting fellow than the rest of the fogeys occupying seats of power.

fourteen years pass...

just watching The Mayfair Set, had forgotten what a repulsive shit-heel Goldsmith Sr was: "And here he was - James Goldsmith - the man who had enmeshed half of America. He sat with his legs crossed, chewing a cigar as fat as a factory chimney. His surroundings were nothing if not appropriate. Real Louis XV furniture, sculptures by Benvenuto Cellini. Only the bookshelves were rather empty - apart from a lonely couple of thrillers and a Stock Exchange handbook."

That reminds me, a friend of mine, formerly with the Met, was telling me recently how he had the misfortune to work with John Aspinall and, not only was he totally vile, but when he turned to face you realized half his face was missing (cancer, not a tiger or sumthin').

Eats like Elvis, shits like De Niro (Tom D.), Friday, 23 December 2016 22:09 (eight years ago)

there seems to be endless footage of Goldsmith proselytising his vision of untramelled capitalism in a demented boggle-eyed manner from the 80's/90's. As vile as he is I actually hate the smug centrists more than him, at least he had the honesty to say his favoured brand of capitalism was cruel, ruthless + Darwenist and shit on many people.
