I like Tiramasau .

anthony, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

You can't have your cake and eat it.

Which is true in my case because I can't stand them. Although that doesn't explain why I had ome cake in the first place.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

My mum visited the other week and brought me a homemade Dundee cake. It was gone with 18hours so I guess I like dundee cake.

Surely Tiramisu is a pudding not a cake? However tiramisu rocks the big one. Sofisticated trifle. Mind you I do a very good Delia adapted orange trifle.

Anything with fruit or nuts in really

I'm not fussy, cake is good

Ed, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Chocolate -- lots of it -- but dark or slightly bitter, and not ODing on the frosting. Mmm.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

MMm cake.

Josh, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Why the might Jaffa. And before any of the monkeys-are-apes-not-chimps pedants start telling me it's a biscuit not a cake, read the fucking packet.

Also there is no cake that cannot be saved by chocolate chips and/or big lumps of chocolate on the top.

And I'd like to know that thinking behind putting [extra] cream on cakes. It just makes them messy to eat and blocks out the flavour.

Graham, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

"the monkeys-are-apes-not-chimps pedants" = grate fuck-you phrase

mark s, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I can't eat cake now, why are you rubbing it in?

Ally, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

to get you off your diet , of course .

anthony, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh, just what I need, "Hey, ass, get even BIGGER than you already are". Argh.

I like ice cream cake.

Ally, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Food is fun. Quit denying yourself pleasure.

anthony, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

You want I should gain 30 lbs? Do you hate me that much? Anyhow, I'm perfectly happy, I ate fruit tonight and it was really good, then I had one of those cottage cheese doubles things, with the cottage cheese and then on the side there's some sort of fruit sauce? That's really goddamn good.

Ally, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

As long as you enjoy what you are doing . Hips are sexy

anthony, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ned Raggett, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I like chocolate cakes. I like chocolate cakes with chocolate chips and chocolate icing. I once made a cake for my stoner roommate's birthday that was a double chocolate cake with chocolate chips and toffee chips and swhirls of fudge and chocolate icing with chocolate chips in it, and then sprinkled ground up chocolate over the top.

It was so rich that neither of us could eat more than a cubic inch of it without collapsing. Took us a week to finish it.

I have a bit of a thing for cream horns.

Disco Dave, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

are those liek eclairs . because eclairs are Godlike but closer to petit fours .

anthony, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I love battenburg cake but I remove all the marzipan and throw that away. I think they look like camp 2-Tone food though and that's good.

Jonnie, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Same kind of thing - no chocolate though which be a barrier to many a cake buyer. Its more the idea of them that appeals - something decadent, something forbidden...

Disco Dave, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Who is your Cake dealer? I like the way it makes a second last two weeks.

Angel Cake - now there was a Sunday tea-time ritual round my house as a kid. You'd try and leave the double creamed segment til last, but rarely manage it. The Kit-Kat of the cake world.

Pete, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Cream horns don't involve choux pastry. Instead the horn is made from some kind of crunchy wafer-like substance, encrusted with sugar crystals. They're OK, but give me an eclair any day. But on a 'monkeys-are-apes-not-chimps pedant' point, I'm not sure either are cakes. They're pastries.

You know how in continental Europe it's rubbish and they drink a lot of UHT milk? Is it the same in the US? I can't remember. Anyway, that makes their cream cakes (and pastries) suck too.

Nick, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Angel Food Cake and Choclate Angel Food Cake are so good.
I still cannot call it devils food cake though

anthony, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Norwegian Apple cake, with just a smidge of lightly whipped cream spooned over while still slightly warm.

cabbage, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Norwegian apple cake is lovely. It's made like a batter rather than a conventional cake mixture. That's an interesting point in case you were wondering. Cream horns are allowed a lip of chocolate by the way and the truly decadent also have a kiss of jam atop the cream. But they are pastries, as are eclairs.

Jonnie, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I like Victoria Sponge best, the one from M & S is lovely, as it has butter cream, I hope M & S doesn't close down coz it's food section is great!

james e l, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Chocolate raspberry cheesecake is the bestest. But Bailey's Irish Cream cheesecake doesn't totally suck either.

Chocolate beats Vanilla.

Kim, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Hello! It's your Gastropornographer here. Some of the best cheesecake I have ever had comes from Veniero's in the East Village (schizo shopping is defined as Stop One, Veniero's. Stop Two, Kiehl's). I've got a massive jones for that rich chocolate cake they make with chestnut flour, so much cocoa it guarantees that I sneeze (which I don't classify as allergy, it's QUALITY CONTROL). Alas, no recipes today, because my flat does not feature an oven and compared to my other culinary skills I am shite at baking.

Note to dieters: eating a small amount of very rich cake won't fuck you up NEARLY as much as eating a shitload of, say, Hostess products or the almighty Dorito. I think Healthy Eating Lo-Fat foods are the biggest scam in the whole world and do not work. Ally, cottage cheese is Satan's smeg, yo, and it reminds you and all comers you're on a miserable diet. Just drink water when you feel the need to eat or have a banana (good for well-being as it helps with serotonin and you will be a little too happy to comfort eat).

suzy, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I like my chocalte cake to be a little bit bitter. Unswetend cocoa does that. Right on Suzy !

Menelaus Darcy, Tuesday, 25 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

it is very trad to soak the fruit in brandy, unless your from the carribean in which case its brandy and rum. If you like I can send you the recipe both my mum and I use, very good, although I have just aquired a tobagan recipe which has molasses, treacle and three kinds of sugar in, mine only had two kinds of treacle and one kind of sugar in.

I hate it when people make cakes in the shape of something else. I mean really really hate. It's a subset of the "playing with food" genre that can be best illustrated with that awful "sausage mash and peas in a smiley face" kind of thing.

my friend recently made a cake in a lobster-shaped pan. she tried to make red fondant for it, but she didn't have enough food coloring so it turned out pink. the finished cake looked like a smooth, shiny pink dong.

There is a farmers' market today outside my office - I just bought a lush lemon drizzle cake. It's sitting on my desk right now and I'm trying to save it to take home and not sneak slices off it all afternoon.

xpost my housemate once made pink mashed potato - tasted the same but could hardly bring myself to eat it, it was just wrong..

(xpost) lol

(xxpost) I mean, if you're going to bake me a cake, just make a cake shaped cake and use the time saved by not unnecessarily decorating it to bake another cake. Then I'd have two cakes instead of something that looks like a half melted traffic cone (or perhaps it's supposed to be a Dalek?)

People do disgusting things with cakes. I do not understand their thinking. They are beyond my ken.

btw, I like spice cake and carrot cake, provided they are not too sweet and are not slathered an inch deep in frosting. chocolate cake is, of course, classic in almost any variation.

https://www.theguardian.com/food/2020/sep/03/colin-the-caterpillar-at-30-how-a-supermarket-cake-stole-the-nations-heart

I didn't get one for my birthday this year (obviously because we were not in the office at the time, but it is definitely an office tradition to get one - and the birthday person gets to eat Colin's FACE om nom nom I love cakes with faces on them - eating faces is GRATE!) and I still vaguely cheated about that.

Would it be absolutely terrible if I went and bought one, and spent the entire weekend eating it by myself - is this a good idea or would I just make myself terribly sick, because no one on earth is really capable of eating that much rich cake by themselves?)

I did actually go and buy one because it was on sale, and the beastie is positively monstrous - I had forgotten how absolutely enourmous they are, and I've no idea how I'm going to consume the whole thing without my colleagues to help!

(There were micro-Colins available - and I discovered you can buy the faces without the cake? But I was suckered into buying a whole big one by the sale price.)
