KATE DO NOT READ THIS THREAD.

Maybe if we have a thread for the adoration of Christmas then people will post on it rather than sully Kate's grinchy thread. What do you like BEST about FANTASTIC CHRISTMASTIME?

Tom, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

being sneaky in being presents for your boy/girlfriend.

Samantha, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic.

dleone, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The warmth of a loving family, the memories of being the happiest little boy in the world on Christmas morning, the food, the drink, old friends getting together, the look of happiness on the face of your beloved when they discover you've got them an original Tigermilk, the snow (magari), Boxing day football, time off work, a great atmosphere at work, people not minding if you're slacking during the work days preceding Xmas, mince pies, BRANDY BUTTER, seeing my aunt and uncle and cousins, drinking port, Xmas bonus, buying presents for yourself when you should be shopping for others, a wood and coal fire roaring in the grate in my parents' lovely house... there must be more, but I'm very glad Tom started this thread. Celebrate happiness!

Mark C, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the look of happiness on the face of your beloved when they discover you've got them an original Tigermilk

Kate! Kate! Let me back on the Grinch thread!

Tom, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hehe, I have you now, my pretty...

Mark C, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

YO ho ho! ARRRRR

Nick, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

doh, I meant "buying" not "being" though I guess that has its advantages. .

Samantha, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kate! Kate! Let me back on the Grinch thread!

Screw that, can I take that copy and just burn it and save us all some time? "Tigermilk roasting on an open fire..."

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"I like Christmas and I like presents!" Summer's Half a Year Away - Kincaid

But seriously, I like the run in to DEC.25...buying presents, looking round shops. Seeing what's on the telly, moaning about lack of decent telly. Christmas lights. Meeting friends. The bleak winter days (sorry Ned!)...I just like it all really, until DEC.26, then it all feels like it's going downhill...

james, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes it does. (Have it's advantages.) That's one gift I never get tired of unwrapping.

Hank, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Christmas, but this year all of my family and friends are going out of town, leaving me completely alone on Christmas day!!!

Which thread should I be posting on, then?

Sean, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You know, Tigermilking really isn't such a bad album, Tom and Ned, I don't know WHAT you're complaining about. Certainly better than their later dreck. In fact, I think I'll go listen to it RIGHT NOW. Much better than all this Xmas tripe I'm hearing everywhere else!

kate, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to hear B&S do a Christmas album.

Sean, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, no I wouldn't.

Sean, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If you go to Glasgow on 20th you can hear them do a Christmas concert. Wow!

Madchen, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am hoping Isobel wears the arse scarf she had on Jools Holland.

Madchen, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like cookies.

Ally, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Mendoza Line did a cover of "Fox in the Snow" for the Kindercore X-mas lbum. I must say it's pretty terrible.

james, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I WANT AN ARSE SCARF, PLEASE.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And it has so many multiple uses, Dan.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR HAR!!!

How I LAUGH that your stupid Xmas thread has turned into a stupid Belle and Sebastian thread!

kate, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Belle And Sebastian have ruined Christmas for me. I hope they all get Dido albums.

Tom, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like gingerbread, Christmas trees, all kinds of sparkly little lights, caroling, having school off, and seeing my family, especially the little cousins. And getting up early Christmas morning and presents and a big cooked breakfast. and #1 Joy of Christmas:

MONKEY BREAD!

Maria, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what is monkey bread?

rainy, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Maria is quite right; monkey bread is my favorite part of Christmas.

Sean, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't believe you eat a fuckin monkey. that's so disgusting.

Ronan, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But what is it? Made of monkeys?

rainy, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

they eat banana bread = they are monkey bread

mark s, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's one of these moral things like how many bananas would you kill to save a monkeys life from being eaten isn't it?

Ronan, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cheeky Monkeys.

Hank, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm currently enjoying phase III of the Xmas experience* - phase I being the cosy-in-the-bosom-of-the-family, Morecambe & Wise on the telly loveliness described by Mark C above (good up until 14 or 15 in my case), phase II being the stuck-at-home stiflingly dull washout (until late 20s).

(* - this is enormously enhanced by Pam, whose infectious glee around this time of year has entirely cured me of my Yuletide cynicism, like a great big dose of antibiotics).

Phase III is where you and your folks reach some uneasy agreement about not actually having to see each other on the actual day (which can, in later years, be stretched to 'not at all between 23/12 and 2/1'), allowing you the freedom to turn the holiday season into one enormous slumber party with half-a-dozen parent-shirking chums.

I suspect this is short-lived and there's a phase IV, where you return to the parental home for the duration, the drabness this time expected and actually quite comforting (whereas, in 'II', the fact that it's just not like 'I' anymore is what's so depressing).

I don't really want to think about Xmas beyond 'IV'. Or beyond Rocky IV, either.

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

if b&s got dido albums wouldn't they think "didn't we already do this"?

You can get tiger bread in Asda's. It has orange and brown stripes on the crust. It tastes like... well, bread really.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 6 December 2002 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't made from cinnamon buns? When I had monkey bread it was made from cinnamon buns and it tastes fabulous.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 6 December 2002 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

N. are you trying to prove that the nature of ILx is cyclical and that we have now discussed almost "everything"?

or have you just not got any proper work to do?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 6 December 2002 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)
