I need to work on my HIPS BUTTOCKS THIGHS! My exercise bike (with the ski-like handle action) is busticated; should I purchase a new sort of bike like that, or just go with one of those gliding Stairmaster type of things?

David Raposa, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

or we could just grift some rich dowager to pay for the blasted liposuction.

jess, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Take up a sport. Indoor 5 a-side football is fun.

james, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, no, see, social events are out of the question - my oh-so-hectic schedule prevents such things. And liposuction is, too - Jess, if you get any money for grift, that $$$ is going straight into some pointless music venture, damn it.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Go for a run

Madchen, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I find Stairmaster more gratifying and less boring than a stationary bike, but that's because I have lots of anger to burn through. If you put loud music on, you can kind of dance and wave your arms in the air while you're climbing. I think it's a better workout, too - I seem to burn more calories on it.

Kerry, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was able to burn a good number of calories on me bike (about 400- 450 in 40+ minutes of biking & pumping), but I'm just afraid that sitting on my tush doesn't actually do anything for lessening my tush. Hence, either one of those Stairmaster things OR the Tony Little Freestyle Gazelle. HIPS BUTTOCKS THIGHS!

For anger management, I recommend Madden 2002 - goddamn, I cuss at the screen like a low-rent Jim Mora.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If going out to exercise is too much on your schedule, how do you fit in staying in to exercise? It takes about the same amount of time.

Ally, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Stairmaster is definitely better for the butt, but rowing machines are really good for that - the only aerobic thing that really gives you a burn in that area.

I've been biking to work lately, and now I suddenly have this huge bulge on only one of my thighs. I look like I had an implant - like one of those Star Trek foreheads or something.

Kerry, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally, it's MUCH easier (& convenient) for me to go home, get into my skanky sweat clothes, hop downstairs for 30-45 minutes, work my mojo, and be done with it. Otherwise, I'd have to plan on bringing an extra set of clothes, drive to the exercise place, change there, work my mojo, leave, and blah blah. It's not that big a deal, no - there's an exercise place about 2 minutes from my crib - but I like to keep things simple (tho that would have me getting out of the house more than once a week, but whatever).

And while this might shock, I was being a bit facetious re: my oh-so- hectic schedule. Yes, stunning.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyway there's nothing that actually will spot reduce any area of your body, you just need to find something you like and it'll tone up everything.

Ally, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

EXERCISE IS FUTILE. EAT SUGARY FOODS AND BE HAPPY. YOU WILL THANK ME ONE DAY.

MIKE HANLE Y, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I must take "going out to exercise" the wrong way. I thought it meant "going home, putting on your sweats, running around the block for half a hour or whatever, and ending up back at home."

Intentional exercise is boring. Dancing and floor sliding and biking to get places are muchly preferable.

Maria, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dancing is the only excercise I get. My friend Stephen told me when I rang him on saturday night I started screaming something about how I was going to shake my ass like I shook it when they played Daft Punks Intergalactic remix in the Kitchen in a dream I had. It is fun though, dancing.

Ronan, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Stairmaster is so 1993.

RS, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to learn how to do the bootilicious jelly dance. You could try that too

Menelaus Darcy, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I AM looking to work on my entire body - it's just that the ass- region is the portion that looks as if it needs the most work. There's plenty of fat all over the place, though - I'm hoping that regular, serious exercise will work on that stuff, too.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why not sweat to the oldies with Richard Simmons? I Luv him to bits. :) Gale

Gale Deslongchamps, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Since it's being such a mild winter here I usually just go out for a jog along the lake. Better scenery that way.

turner, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am hungover. The thought of exercise does not appeal.

Will, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You have stumbled across the future of exercise, in the shape of the BUSTICATOR.

'Sexercise' is one of my favourite words.

Nick, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My gym is advertising a master class (?) in what they call Rhythm Jazz Dance (I think that was it) which apparently teaches 'all the moves from pop videos' and 'moves you wouldn't be ashamed to show off in a club'. They recommend it if you like Destiny's Child. DC have (well, had) magnificent hips, buttocks and thighs, I may give it a whirl.

Emma, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The S plan Nick?

Menelaus Darcy, Thursday, 6 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If there's anywhere with reasonably smooth paths near you, in-line skating is v. good for legs and butt. Not so strenuous that you end up a big puddle of sweat either. If it's in the gym though I'd go for a round of weights, leg presses etc on the universal and then twenty to forty minutes on the treadmill.

Kim, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But not very good for bones ie I fall down on the pavement and they all break.

Nic, Sunday, 9 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually I only ever fell once, and I'm definitely not known to be the most co-ordinated person of all time. Having good skates and a good, flat surface makes all the difference though. It's a miserable activity otherwise.

six years pass...

so the nf has decided he wants to get him an exercise bike... i have tried to talk him into getting a real bike but not too hard - this is undoubtedly A Good Thing and A Big Step Forward and i don't want to dissuade him. so he asked me to do some research and find one. i guess his thinking is that since i ride my bike everywhere i will know what to look for in an exercise bike but this couldn't be further from the truth - i ride my bike and run in the park partly because i think running machines and exercise bikes are dumb when you can get the real thing and it will be cheaper/free/better/more fun/you can achieve two things at once etc etc. so i really don't know what i'm looking for. something that doesn't cost a million pounds would be good, he's far from skint but not made of money either - i was thinking around £150-200? closer to the £200 mark might mean he would actually use it more... this one below is £100 but is it crap?

http://www.edirectory.co.uk/pf/880/mia/d/cintura+rapide+programmable+magnetic+exercise+bike+9999+next+day+delivery/pid/5778718

some of the ones i've seen have weight restrictions on them and he won't tell me what he weighs :/

brands to avoid/go for? features recommended? places to avoid buying them from? good places for advice? any help at all would be welcome... we are in london uk.

Get the easiest one to dust, far too dull for me, then again I do laps in the pool..

I would spend the money on a years gym/pool membership for him.

Jarlrmai, Saturday, 1 March 2008 18:18 (seventeen years ago)

neufriend?

well yeah that's what i think, hence trying a bit to persuade him to get a real bike. i think the idea is he can watch football or films or, er, his blackberry, while he's on a stationary one.

I would spend the money on a years gym/pool membership for him.

would never, ever, ever get used. not even once. partly there is no way he'll do any of this in public (this is part of the reason for not-a-real-bike), and also he genuinely doesn't have time. the other thing about the exercise bike is he can use it at 1am or whatever. also it's his money not mine.

neufriend?

um yeah.

emsk, Sunday, 2 March 2008 10:34 (seventeen years ago)

I did pushups today. it's been a couple of weeks.

tremendoid, Sunday, 2 March 2008 10:43 (seventeen years ago)

1 am exercise is wrong and depending on your flat/house, noisy :)

I would look for something cheap/free maybe second hand look at borrowing one for a bit, sorry to be negative but I feel home gym equipment will end up gathering dust given other distractions at home unless you have a rigid will of iron.

Jarlrmai, Sunday, 2 March 2008 14:22 (seventeen years ago)

buying home gym equipment means you have to MAINTAIN home gym equipment ugh.

Autumn Almanac, Sunday, 2 March 2008 23:15 (seventeen years ago)

is exercise bike noisy? real bike is nearly silent, except when going over bumpy bits, which i'm hoping would not be a problem with exercise bike.

yeah maybe i'll ask on freecycle...

emsk, Sunday, 2 March 2008 23:43 (seventeen years ago)

re noise it depends on the resistance method and the surface the bike is on.

They can "rumble" quite a bit if on a hard floor.

Jarlrmai, Monday, 3 March 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

I’ve never been convinced stationary bikes give you any real gain, at least compared to rowing on a rowing machine or running on a treadmill.

Mr. Goodman, Monday, 3 March 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

Crosstrainer is more interesting than an exercycle. But then again, exercyles are easier to read while you're no them. You kind of have to concentrate on crosstrainer or else you fall off.

I got mine for free, as you know - so I'd reccomend freecycle etc. Perhaps because it was free I use it more.

They can be quite noisy, but best if you just wear headphones.

The trick to keeping doing it is little and often - I do ten minutes without fail as soon as I wake up, so I'm too sleepy to complain about having to do it. And by the time I'm done riding, I'm AWAKE.

Masonic Boom, Monday, 3 March 2008 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, and sorry, but stationary bikes do not actually make you any better at riding real ones. I did years on exercycles and still cannot bicycle. They do nothing for your balance. (Weirdly, the crosstrainer is good for balance.)

Masonic Boom, Monday, 3 March 2008 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

I just couldn't exercise at home I have to go the pool and "be" somewhere else. Or have a purpose like cycling to work.
