C/D: Girls Who Chew Tobacco

Dunno if I'd call it a trend yet, but, at least where I live, a lot of young women are chewing tobacco. There's this group of rather butch girls on campus that I see do it quite openly, but I've seen many regular, (otherwise) fashion-conscious girls chewing in the clubs. I think it might have something to do with Vancouver's no indoor smoking bylaw, still relatively new - this may be a way of circumventing the law for really lazy people, I dunno. Either way, I find it a bit strange, because I always thought of it as a very rural, guy thing that even most guys are too scared of doing/think of as gross and outmoded. I hear LOTS of girls are starting to chew in the interior and my friends from Portland say that they're seeing it too. Are you seeing it where you live? Where did this weird subculture come from?

Mouth cancer. Dud.

kate/thank you friendly cloud (papa november), Thursday, 31 March 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't kiss them.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

ew. does that mean they also do the spitting thing like cowboys do in movies?

gem (trisk), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

Chewing tobacco is for wimps, it's all about the SNUS!

It won't be long before the return of snuff, mark my words.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

Chewing tobacc: dud no matter who does it.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

RS OTM. Growing up in a rural area, I always had the fear of the spitoons guys were carrying around, and the bus floor was covered in dark green ick. BLECH.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's disgusting no matter who does it, with all of the spitting and tobacco gunk.

Leon Bluth (Ex Leon), Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

I used to play softball against this team of huuuge girls in one of the inner-cities of glorious NJ. Anyhoo, these chicks chewed tobacco and scared the life out of short, dorky me. Disgustingness.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

growing up out in the rural west, lots of my classmates did it, including the girls. It's pretty gross. Funny to think of it going on in da club.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

Is this seriously a new trend? Where? What could drive a single young woman to use tobacco, yet alone many?

I'm not sure I believe this.

sunburned and snowblind (kenan), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

My grandmother chewed tobacco. She started after she quit smoking when she was around 65. THEN SHE DIED OF EMPHYSEMA, I mean why stop smoking when you've been smoking for 40 years.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

growing up in the MIDwest i never saw a chick do this. never have. never heard HEARD of one doing it til now. what the hell. what, the, hell.

its not WRONG but it aint right, Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

So gross.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 31 March 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

classic but i'd never kiss one.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 31 March 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

ew. bad enough when guys do it, especially when they might inadvertently spit in my soda can at parties.

(not that it's very common around here; i don't think it's quite rural enough. or i don't know the right people.)

sugarpants: kind of blurry, kind of double (sugarpants), Thursday, 31 March 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

Total classic. For those who thought smoking in bars was offensive, how's about talking to a girl only to have her lean over and hit her spitter?

So long as they use those pouches and don't have bits of stray tobacco floating around in their mouths, I don't see how kissing them can be any filthier than kissing an ordinary smoker.

Off topic, sort of: In college I stumbled across a warning from the NCAA that said female athletes, mostly softball players, were putting dip between their toes, in their armpits, and even in their vaginas in order to circumvent rules that forbid its use. That said, I think the mouth is a much less disgusting place.

scrimshaw (scrimshaw1837), Thursday, 31 March 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

"I hear LOTS of girls are starting to chew in the interior"

Best random lyric snippet ever, can I bite it?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

classic if the plug adheres to the ceiling

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

RS £aRue OTM. Really the grossest habit whomever does it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 31 March 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

I misread this thread title as "Girls Who Do Chewbacca"

Kim (Kim), Friday, 1 April 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

They probably share the same worldviews and personal habits.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Friday, 1 April 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

Now we know why wookies groan.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 April 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

they've heard your jokes!

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 1 April 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

wakka wakka

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 1 April 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

Damn you sir.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 April 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

Wow, scrimshaw, I didn't believe you about the pouch-in-vagina thing, but then I Googled it and found the S.I. Reilly article. I had no idea that girls and chew had such a weird history. What's weirder though is that the form in which I'm seeing it here is very hipster. If this scene is some attempt at gender-rolebending irony, I think it's too risky/gross a step to take, sexist as that may sound. Girls shouldn't chew!

LeCoq (LeCoq), Friday, 1 April 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I'm torn, and a little of the same mind as stence - I think that it looks, hell, IS, pretty awesome, rugged, and yeah, even sexy looking, but only in a visual way that stops being hot as soon as you see the bottle/can or smell the stuff. And I've seen one girl pack the dip waaaay too big, Popeye style, which didn't look very nice, esp considering she was very very attractive otherwise.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Friday, 1 April 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

I find watching women spit disturbing, but there's some Calamity Jane sort of attraction regardless. I think if I saw that Popeye scenario my head might explode.

As far as the trend goes, I remember hearing about women in Scandanavian countries who chewed to subvert anti-smoking laws a few years ago -- I hope it makes its way to NYC so little Brooklyn boutiques can make cute little portable spitoons, sort of like dip spit purses.

nick parish (scrimshaw1837), Friday, 1 April 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

impressive, if disgusting, only if they chew *twist* tobacco, like my dad and uncle (not my mom) used to while they puttered around in the shop and listened to University of Tennessee football games on the radio...

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...
I'm just south of Portland and I met a girl the other weekend who was having such a hard time trying to smoke this stub of a cigar that she finally just broke it open and started chewing the filler. She even offered to share.

I met a guy a week or so before that who had tobacco juice in his mustache, and it made the hairs stick together in two little clumps in a way that looked a lot like tarantula fangs.

And I've only been in Oregon a couple of months...

Kerm, Thursday, 19 April 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

This shit is absolutely disgusting. I don't care if an aborable Great Dane puppy is chewing it---nothing can transcend the chew grossitude.

Abbott, Thursday, 19 April 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

what if they introduce it in chewing gum form

ken c, Thursday, 19 April 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

They have, sort of:
