i use iTunes to listen to music and recently it's started just skipping. Like when i move my mouse around and theres a moments pause while the computer processes - well whenever that happens it just starts skipping. Is this the soundcard? Or iTunes? or something altogether different. I have 20gb memory left on my PC so i doubt it's anything to do with that.

Fuinnily enough, my ipod itself has just started skipping. Advice appreciated.

your hard drive space probably isn't as important as your amount of ram. make sure you have enough - i'd say at least 512 if you are on win xp or osx

Normally I would agree with that, but I have 1.75GB of ram and still occasional skips. But I usually have the CPU Portal widget open onscreen (even though Jon has informed me that Konfabulator is shit), and the skips come with spikes in system activity.

this happened to us as well. but usually it was because the comp had been on too long and i just needed to restart it to solve the problem.

Can iTunes be tweaked to get CPU priority like WinAmp can? That'd help, though of course itd slow other things down.

i can't remember how much ram i have but its 512 or over. I'll try restarting. I haven't restarted in a while!

i know for more serious music apps they recommend setting performance to favor background services over applications - might help with itunes

If you have too much running at one time, you could run into issues. You might want to defrag, if you haven't recently. It happens on my system too with other players, but usually only when I have a boatload of things running at the same time.
