They are all boring and they suck. Thank you.

Dan I., Friday, 1 April 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Finnish movies are AMAZING!

Airtube (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

The country of Finran is displeased.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

haha dan the film fest hasn't even STARTED yet!

f--gg (gcannon), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Iranian movies are GREAT!

Airtube (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

I do not want to watch the coming of age story of a boy with a glass eye. I do not want to watch the coming of age story of a shy girl who lives among the pines. I do not wish to watch coming of age stories of any kind. Do not make them. Stop making all movies unless they interest me.

Dan I., Friday, 1 April 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

KURASMAKI film (the other one) starring HENRY THOMAS playing a ROCK MUSICIAN. that's a strong buy, dan i.

f--gg (gcannon), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

That Finnsh coming-of-age movie about the narcoleptic firebug prostitute with Tourette's was good, though.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

India too. Listen up India: if you want to show us ultra hot womens shaking it you have to let us see their naughty bits. that's the deal. To not even allow kissings on the lips is just cock teasery.

Dan I., Friday, 1 April 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

Mika? He is...not a good filmmaker.

Airtube (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

Dear south america: we've already seen that one about political upheaval. seen it lots of times.

Dan I., Friday, 1 April 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

All of Scandinavia: please stop being influenced by anything American. You get it wrong every time and it's embarrassing.

Dan I., Friday, 1 April 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

So Dan are there any foreign films YOU like?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

how do you think holidays are at the Kurasmaki household?

f--gg (gcannon), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

We need more: African films made SOUTH of the equator, Japanese films (even MORE than the lots we already have), French experimentalism, American movies made by poor people who live in cities (but do not involve coming of age in any way).

Dan I., Friday, 1 April 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Period pieces not based on grebt works of fiction.

Dan I., Friday, 1 April 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

no more Japanese films plz

Airtube (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

I think I could use LESS French films (esp. "experimental" ones.) And frankly I think there are enough Takeshi Miike and Ringu knock-offs coming out right now. You actually want more?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

dear Hollywood: You suck

oh wait

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

See, what did I say about African films below the equator! This one looks awesome

Dan I., Friday, 1 April 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

More American movies made by poor people who DON'T live in cities, please. Like Phil Chambliss!

Airtube (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

How come Iranians can make all the movies they want about their precious little boys growing up, but I can't get a violence-filled narrative of some west african civil war or something.

Dan I., Friday, 1 April 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

More movies about dancing but not folk dancing.

Dan I., Friday, 1 April 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Which film fest is this about?

Minneapolis starts today and already I'm having major scheduling conflicts?

Do I see the new Despleschin or the second scary-looking McDull HK animation thing? (Answer: Kings and Queen.)

Do I try to catch lots of Jacquot films or only the newest one/two? (Answer: Depends on how the first one/two go.)

Why am I wasting screening time on stuff -- like Kung Fu Hustle and 3-Iron -- that I know is already going to receive "proper" distribution in Minneapolis within a month? (Answer: Free pass, beeotch.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

More movies about marxists as long as a love story is not involved.

Dan I., Friday, 1 April 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

maybe there needs to be an afghan jackass where they run around in a minefield for half an hour?

f--gg (gcannon), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

Is this not the most odd mix of boasting and defensiveness ever penned?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

OMG you just described the perfect movie f--gg!!!!

Dan I., Friday, 1 April 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

KURASMAKI film (the other one) starring HENRY THOMAS playing a ROCK MUSICIAN. that's a strong buy, dan i.

Got an awful review in this morning's paper, but I probably trust the StarTrib's FF coverage about as much as I trust Variety at Cannes.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

More movies with rude puppets please.

Dan I., Friday, 1 April 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

i didn't even know there was an ASSAYAS movie. i should check that out.

i'm excited for the Iraqi films, and the one about dandies in the SA townships.

f--gg (gcannon), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

This year's slate is (choose one: "disappointingly" or "intriguingly") devoid, mostly, of the roll call of Film Comment Critics' Poll "Best Undistributed Films" candidates. Aside from The World and Clean... that's it. Where's The Holy Girl, Cafe Lumiere or that movie about the French courthouse, et al?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

Am I the only one who is getting hives from the thought of actually having to enter fucking Block E to see some of this shit?!

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Iranian movie:

http://mnfilmarts.org/m-spiff/2005/images/screenshots/World%20Cinema/fifth_reaction.jpg

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

Looks like Dr. Seuss.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

haha i kind of like block E. comfier seats that the oak street, and better candy.

f--gg (gcannon), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

maybe we oughta fap one of these?? i'm going to the opening gala 2nite.

f--gg (gcannon), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

I work tonight, but that sounds cool for some impending screenings.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

ok, lemme dig out my calendar, i had a few marked.

(thread repurposing is my favorite thing abt ilx)

f--gg (gcannon), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha that picture!

Airtube (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

http://mnfilmarts.org/m-spiff/2005/images/screenshots/World%20Cinema/fifth_reaction.jpg
The 5000 Amputated Fingers of Dr. T.

Dan I., Friday, 1 April 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

At this point, screenings I fully intend to attend (I'll be seeing more than these; this list is just the locked-down ones, mostly because I'll be meeting people there):

Saturday, April 02
Armwrestler from Solitude - 2:45pm (Block E)
Kung Fu Hustle - 7:15pm (Riverview)
5 x 2 - 9:30pm (Riverview)

Sunday, April 03
Kings and Queen - 7:10pm (Oak Street)

Monday, April 04
hmmm... can't decide between:
McDull, Prince de la Bun - 7:30pm (Block E)
Land of Plenty - 7:30pm (Riverview)

er... beyond that I haven't even had time to look and choose. I won't be missing The World, but haven't decided which screening works better for me.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

I was a bit disappointed in The World compared to his last two films.

Assayas' Clean is OK; Nick Nolte gives a really sweet, restrained performance.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm waiting for the Iranian musical comedy revival.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 1 April 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

Now that's wholesome entertainment for the whole family.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 1 April 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

Busby Burkha!

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 1 April 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

Chador Strouse's compositions and arrangements are 100 % halal.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 1 April 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

Okay, so um...Makhmalbaf(s), Kiarostami, Kaurismaki...anyone else you want to go for? It's not like we're really drowning in them (yet).

Now South Korea, that's a whole nother story.

Girolamo Savonarola, Saturday, 2 April 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

Okay, no more movies about kids growing up from any country then! They all end up being indistinguishable from My Girl; it's just a huge plot cop-out. You can have your little protaganist wander around wide-eyed while unjust things happen to and around them instead of anything interesting and everyone is forced to pretend they like it cause the kid is cute a life going from idyllic to stark and traumatic is an evergreen idea, right? NO.

Dan I., Saturday, 2 April 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

"swenkas" was good. also schmaltzy (had this kinda offputting narration by a "storyteller" type character who is in the frame with the doc's subjects). and the contest shots are too few, short, and far between. but i liked it.

g e o f f (gcannon), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

I need to get back into the swing of it tomorrow night. What to see, what to see? 3 Iron?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 03:24 (twenty years ago)

Eric what do you know about SADE?? there's no description, but it's one of the Jacquot pictures (who i don't know a thing about).

g e o f f (gcannon), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

3-Iron looks like the kind of movie dan i. would be toootally in love with!

but the movies on either side of it look pretty great, so I think i'll be down there.

i'm definitely going to "alias kurban said" tomorrow at the bell. so far i'm batting 1.000 on documentaries, but the features have been spotty even from the big names...

g e o f f (gcannon), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

ok i didn't know "sade" was five yrs old. reviews look mixed.

g e o f f (gcannon), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

I just got scheduled for a 4:30 morning shift tomorrow! :(

Looks like I'll have to wrap up my evening after 3 Iron instead of staying for the one after.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

My Saturday will be:

White Diamond -- Bell, 5pm
The World -- Oak Street, 6:45pm
7th Heaven -- Oak Street, 9:45pm

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 9 April 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

iran has produced some great movies!

what are good finnish movies, adam?

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 9 April 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Just kidding about White Diamond. It'll be more convenient for me to go on Tuesday.

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 9 April 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

Clean tonight at Oak Street. FAP? I'll also be seeing stuff tomorrow, but as to exactly what, I'm open for discussion.

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Monday, 11 April 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

"Sade" was fun in a restrainedly pervy, well-short-of-Gaspar Noe(thank Christ) way. Daniel Auteuil does disdain and contempt very nicely.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

I think A Tout de Suite (the "new one" in the retrospective) was the least strong of the 3 Jacquot films I watched, with A Single Girl and Seventh Heaven being the other two.

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

i'll be at clean! it's probably the only thing i'll see today, i may have to restrain myself from here on in (i've seen 14 so far! shit!!), and i may even be out of town for the weekend.

i'm excited: clean is sort of the tiebreaker for me; i hearted irma vep a lot, but demonlover was just stupid. (yes i know he's made other films.)

g e o f f (gcannon), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

dan i will be happy to hear that the one finn film i've seen (upswing) kind of sucked.

g e o f f (gcannon), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

still batting 1.000 on docs!

alias kurban said was a lot of fun but apparently pretty flawed; author of competing book on same subject was on campus, coincidentally, and have us the real deal.

anytown USA: embarrassing, i recommend.

the ister; 3 1/2 hours! heidegger! the danube! best movie ever!!

g e o f f (gcannon), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

I was briefly considering attending the finger-point Iranian movie after Clean, but talked my friend Jess into joining me at Clean tonight. Hopefully, she'll be up for a quick drink afterwards. If not... well, then I apologize for throwing FAP out and retracting. There's always Tuesday.

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Monday, 11 April 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

I'm shamefully sitting at something like 10 or 11. I should really consider seeing, like, four tomorrow at Lagoon just to make my (free) gold pass worth the effort.

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Monday, 11 April 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

I just only now realized that Collier saying that Clean was "kind of a mess" was a punchline. Ha ha!

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 06:56 (twenty years ago)

haha i didn't pick that up either! wotta card.

a rider named death was very pretty, but all the political films i've seen have been largely free of politics—which i guess is the point of this one (it's abt anti-czarist terrorists a century ago). didn't really dramatize its ideas very well, but my golly, some very good looking russians in it.

one night husband: um, if a movie gets billed as drawing on ozu and lynch, does that mean i can't complain if it's boring and doesn't make much sense?

g e o f f (gcannon), Friday, 15 April 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

er "the point of this one" being the dude doesn't give a fig abt socialism or whatever, just killing. pretty standard.

g e o f f (gcannon), Friday, 15 April 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

eleven months pass...
There may be no danger of Finnish and Iranian films screening in Minneapolis this April.

http://screenlabs.blogspot.com/2006/03/shifting-soil-under-oak.html

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 17 March 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

the ister; 3 1/2 hours! heidegger! the danube! best movie ever!!

Just saw this on DVD a month ago. Very good, though not as... um, filmic as my favorite essay films.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 17 March 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway, official word from mnfilmarts claims "there must be a festival," but there may only be half as many films.

http://mnfilmarts.org/m-spiff/2005/breakingnews.php

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
Hmm... looks like I'm not the only one who has skipped out on every last film at this year's fest.

(I have an excuse, though. I'm protesting them for rejecting my friend's short film.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 28 April 2006 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

Or: I'm the only ILXor left in Minneapolis.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 28 April 2006 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

For real.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 28 April 2006 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

last year one of the organizers hooked me up with a pass. no such luck this year, but i think a friend of mine has some tickets he wants to get rid of.

long story short i haven't seen shit.

and the ister popped into my head today, for some reason. wierd.

geoff (gcannon), Friday, 28 April 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

dear finland plz stop making so many tuomases

-++-+--+, Friday, 28 April 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

Another excuse: I promised to pledge $75 to the Oak Street should it be proven to me that MN Film Arts intend to not turn it into a Chipotle expansion. Coincidentally, that's the same amount that MN Film Arts was asking for a 10 film pass.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 28 April 2006 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

dear finland plz stop making so many tuomases

When they made him, they broke the mould.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 28 April 2006 22:22 (nineteen years ago)

eleven months pass...
*sigh*

Eric H., Wednesday, 18 April 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)

Has this started already?

John Justen, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

It starts in radically stripped down form Thursday evening. It runs for I think one single week and with about 70 films in the mix instead of over twice that number.

Eric H., Thursday, 19 April 2007 01:08 (eighteen years ago)

Rumor is there will be another "anniversary" festival in the fall, but I'll believe that when I see it. More likely there will be a groundbreaking ceremony for the Chipotle expansion on the site of what will be formerly known as the Oak Street Cinema.

Eric H., Thursday, 19 April 2007 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

It's the SF Festival at the end of the month. I grabbed tickets to see Colossal Youth quick-fast.

admrl, Thursday, 19 April 2007 03:14 (eighteen years ago)

It's the SF Festival at the end of the month. I grabbed tickets to see Colossal Youth quick-fast.

Good move.

C0L1N B..., Thursday, 19 April 2007 03:22 (eighteen years ago)

Memo to all other cities with film festivals in the U.S.: yours isn't the lamest anymore.

Eric H., Thursday, 19 April 2007 04:30 (eighteen years ago)

have a coffee before Colossal Youth.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 19 April 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

Memo to all other cities with film festivals in the U.S.: yours isn't the lamest anymore.

If Tribeca were NYC's only festival this would be incorrect.

C0L1N B..., Thursday, 19 April 2007 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

have a coffee before Colossal Youth.

I have a STEEL MIND and STEEL BALLS when it comes to slow-moving films. How does it compare to his other films in this respect? I saw Ossos a while back.

I'm also going for Opera Jawa and The Yacoubian Building - anyone seen these? Can't be bothered with the new Hal Hartley or Michael Glawogger or Guy Maddin. What about Bamako? That sounds interesting.

admrl, Thursday, 19 April 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't seen any other Costas, so I can't compare them, but Colossal Youth isn't just slow-moving, it doesn't really move forward at all if you're talking strictly about narrative.

I assume the Maddin they're screening is Brand Upon the Brain!. It's really worth seeing if they're doing live foley/score/voiceover. Otherwise, have no regrets about skipping it.

C0L1N B..., Thursday, 19 April 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

That is good to hear about Colossal Youth, I'm so darn tired of conventional narrative at this juncture. Also I'm going to Lisbon next month (although I gather it's not a part of Lisbon a tourist would wander into).

I know a lot of people on ILX like Guy Maddin, but I'm not really a fan. It is Brand Upon The Brain!.

admrl, Thursday, 19 April 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

It's stylistically very similar to Cowards Bend the Knee, but then I've pretty much loved everything he's done since The Heart of the World.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 19 April 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
http://www.mspfilmfest.org/2007/content/view/367/1/

Haha... MSP audience most hated the two movies I most strongly considered seeing.

Eric H., Friday, 4 May 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

is that a validation? I didn't like Climates.

Looking fwd to Sarah Polley being a good director, somehow.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 4 May 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

two months pass...

Did anyone catch new Aki Kaurismäki "Lights In The Dusk"?

admrl, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

also known as Laitakaupungin valot. I love the finnish language!

admrl, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 20:42 (seventeen years ago)

Apparently this is the last part of Aki's "loser trilogy". Ummm, surely that's ironic!

admrl, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

I found "Lights In The Dusk" his least interesting in awhile. Not bad tho.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 20:44 (seventeen years ago)

I knew you would have seen it! Do you miss anything?

admrl, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 20:44 (seventeen years ago)
