THE E-MAIL TO SEND BALLOTS TO IS: ilx80s@yahoo.com

This is the complete list as of now. You can still add nominations throughout, lobby for your favorite films on the thread, and so on.

Deadline is April 30, 2005, 23:59 GMT. You can vote for up to thirty films, and the points system is as follows...

1st - 40
2nd - 36
3rd - 32
4th - 29
5th - 27
6th - 25
7th - 24
8th - 23
9th - 22
10 through 30 continue on as such, subtracting one point the lower you go, until 30th place, which gets 1 point. Easy enough.

I hope everyone will contribute a bit of a rave about their favorite film on the list, or a rave about each film on the list. Please try to do this before the end of the voting. Otherwise I just have to trawl the board archives. At the least, try to do it for some of your top ones, or ones you figure others might not write about.

And now, the list (any errors, please let me know!):

Girolamo Savonarola, Saturday, 2 April 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

"Revenge of the Ninja"? Frigging autotype. That's supposed to be Revenge of the Nerds.

Girolamo Savonarola, Saturday, 2 April 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

Where's the link to the noms thread?

Remy Ulysses Fitzgerald (x Jeremy), Saturday, 2 April 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

I can provide it, but why?

Girolamo Savonarola, Saturday, 2 April 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

I couldn't find it, I missed a lot, and I want to know who dared suggest Pixote?

Remy Ulysses Fitzgerald (x Jeremy), Saturday, 2 April 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

and now...NOMINATIONS (optional) for the ILX Top 100 Films of the 1980's!!!

Remy Ulysses Fitzgerald (x Jeremy), Saturday, 2 April 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

Guess ya did the dirty work yourself... ;)

Girolamo Savonarola, Saturday, 2 April 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

Man, this is tough. I've only managed to narrow it down to 138 films so far...

Girolamo Savonarola, Sunday, 3 April 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

I think the worst 100 movies of the 80s are in that list too.

a banana (alanbanana), Sunday, 3 April 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

I did mine impulsively. Turned out very, very, oddly.

Remy Ulysses Fitzgerald (x Jeremy), Sunday, 3 April 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

Three ballots so far...I've already started the tallying calculations, so the results should be even faster and easier this time around!

Girolamo Savonarola, Sunday, 3 April 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)

Just want to note that the following has somehow so far escaped inclusion:

Decline of the American Empire (Denys Arcand, 1986)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 3 April 2005 07:00 (twenty years ago)

Six are in so far - all of which have been tallied.

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 6 April 2005 04:09 (twenty years ago)

C'mon folks. If we all work together, we can prevent the ILX canonization of:

Abyss, The (James Cameron, 1989)
Batman (Tim Burton, 1989)
Beverly Hills Cop (Martin Brest, 1984)
Blues Brothers, The (John Landis, 1980)
Chariots of Fire (Hugh Hudson, 1981)
Cinema Paradiso (Giuseppe Tornatore, 1988)
Crocodile Dundee (Peter Faiman, 1986)
Dead Poets Society (Peter Weir, 1989)
Dirty Dancing (Emile Ardolino, 1987)
Fatal Attraction (Adrian Lyne, 1987)
Field of Dreams (Phil Alden Robinson, 1989)
Fish Called Wanda, A (Charles Crichton, 1988)
Gandhi (Richard Attenborough, 1982)
Goonies, The (Richard Donner, 1985)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Steven Spielberg, 1989)
Little Mermaid, The (Ron Clements and John Musker, 1989)
National Lampoon's Vacation (Harold Ramis, 1983)
Princess Bride, The (Rob Reiner, 1987)
Rain Man (Barry Levinson, 1988)
Scarface (Brian De Palma, 1983)
Some Kind of Wonderful (Howard Deutch, 1987)
Spaceballs (Mel Brooks, 1987)
Terms of Endearment (James L. Brooks, 1983)
Top Gun (Tony Scott, 1986)
Untouchables, The (Brian De Palma, 1987)

Number of those 25 mentioned that will likely show up on the final 100: unquestionably no less than 19.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 05:31 (twenty years ago)

Why are so many of the beloved movies of the 1980s so damned ugly-looking?! The same can not be said for almost any other decade. And no, I'm not talking about the fashions and architecture and whatnot, but that rancid, wan, skim milk cinematography.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 05:36 (twenty years ago)

What's wrong with Top Gun?

Remy (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

Everything.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 05:44 (twenty years ago)

But being directed by Tony Scott is probably its greatest crime.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 05:45 (twenty years ago)

Interestingly enough, if this were a poll of top 1980s albums, Top Gun would probably get one of my twentysomething slots.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 05:53 (twenty years ago)

1) I know an awful lot of people who deeply love the movie in spite of its datedness.
2) What movie better exemplifies the (rhetorical) coke-filled excess of an unfashionably foolish decade?

Remy (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 05:53 (twenty years ago)

Oh, Top Gun...it makes me wince, because it always makes me think of this dorky friend I had in high school who loved Top Gun and had a big crush on the class singing star (she was the lead in the school musicals for like 3 years running), and he got it in his head that it would be great at one of the musical cast parties to go up to her in front of a room full of people and do the whole "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" scene for her. He talked another friend into being his Anthony Edwards sidekick and they spent basically the whole party trailing her around, looking for an opportune moment to start their shtick. They got increasingly desperate and finally just sprang it on her when she was in the middle of talking to somebody, the whole "She has," "No she hasn't," "Yes she has!" back and forth routine, and she kind of turned and looked at them blankly like what?, and then turned away back to her conversation before they even started the song...so they sang the first verse to her totally oblivious back, and she wandered away either utterly unaware they were singing to her or doing a good job of pretending to be. They kind of sputtered their way to the second chorus and stopped, and the rest of us in the room just kind of pretended we hadn't seen anything and went back to our own conversations. So that movie always makes me feel bad, on top of being crappy.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

3) I don't think I like Top Gun any more, gypsy mothra.

Remy (x Jeremy), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 05:58 (twenty years ago)

2) What movie better exemplifies the (rhetorical) coke-filled excess of an unfashionably foolish decade?

I'm not going to start listing alternates but merely ask if you really think Top Gun fulfills this throne best.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

eric,
only one of those would be in my top ten... i have a soft spot for the princess bride

t0dd swiss, Wednesday, 6 April 2005 06:27 (twenty years ago)

I find it somewhat disturbing how many of these I've seen - a much higher number than I had seen from the 90s list. I guess it's disturbing because I realize that this is really the stuff I grew up on in all its cheezy 80s glory.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

I'm afraid my voting will also be skewed towards the puerile - since for most of these I will be going by my impressions as a young teenager.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

>since for most of these I will be going by my impressions as a young teenager.

Yeah, that's why I'm likely not voting, just to see you guys anoint John Hughes over Bill Forsyth...

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm excited for this poll, it should be tons better than the 90s one.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

I just noticed that the 2nd and 3rd of the Indiana Jones trilogy is nominated but not the first. I wish I'd nominated something (it) now.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

The beauty of the '80s poll is that you can vote for whatever you want.

(But I'm voting for Temple of Doom.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Out of Eric's list, I voted for Scarface.

a banana (alanbanana), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

I just noticed that the 2nd and 3rd of the Indiana Jones trilogy is nominated but not the first.

Look again. It's there. Under "R".

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Although I am a bit puzzled that "Revenge of The Nerds II" was nominated but not the original. Is the sequel really better?

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

Out of Eric's list, I voted for Scarface.

I actually only put that one and The Untouchables on the shitlist because they are De Palma's least interesting films of the era and, thus, the most popular. I'd much rather see 200+ points for something like Body Double or Casualties of War.

I am a bit puzzled that "Revenge of The Nerds II" was nominated but not the original. Is the sequel really better?

I think I nominated that one with tongue only half in cheek, but I'm usually indefensibly happy while watching that flick. Other people's votes for Spaceballs, National Lampoon's Vacation or Three Amigos (which was somehow not nominated) = my impending vote for Nerds II.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

If you guys read the second post in the thread, he says that "Revenge of the Ninja" should read "Revenge of the Nerds".

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

I would have voted for Lucas if it had been available to me.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

Ten ballots so far? You guys don't want this one decided by ten people, do you? Why I oughta...

"Chris, everything I say is a lie. Except that. And that. And that and that and that. And that. And that."

Girolamo Savonarola, Thursday, 14 April 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

You guys don't want this one decided by ten people, do you?

I wanted it to be decided by one person: me. Unfortunatly, it's too late for that.

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 14 April 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

sent my ballot in.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 14 April 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

I've just tallied three more. If you haven't done this yet, please get them in now and avoid the rush (thereby allowing me to release the results faster!).

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

Doobie Keebler (Charles McCain), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

Do not forget. Just get it over with, so at least you can legitimately bitch about the results. :)

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

The Last Metro didn't make it? For shame.

Ian Riese-Moraine has a grenade, that pineapple's not just a toy! (Eastern Mantr, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

You can still add nominations throughout, lobby for your favorite films on the thread, and so on.

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

Okay, I just sent mine.

Curious George (1/6 Scale Model) (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

Moreso than the 90's list, I found myself going through the nominations and thinking "I can't believe I haven't seen that movie".

I'll send out my ballot later tonight.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

Finally just sent a ballot...

Titles I had to add for lack of "nominations":

Body Double (Brian De Palma, 1984)
Casualties of War (Brian De Palma, 1989)
Elephant (Alan Clarke, 1989)
Honkytonk Man (Clint Eastwood, 1982)

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Nice adds.

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

shit, I didn't notice that Come and See wasn't nominated, so I suppose I shall add that at the last second.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

DRESSED TO KILL!!! DRESSED TO KILL!!!

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Thirty ballots have come in. We shall have the results done by the end of the day.

Girolamo Savonarola, Sunday, 1 May 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

Thirty ballots have come in.

Total?

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 1 May 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

eek

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Sunday, 1 May 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

Total. The first results should be in very very soon. (Sorry, too busy today watching Kiarostami and the amazing Songs from the Second Story.)

Girolamo Savonarola, Sunday, 1 May 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

That's a pretty small sample. I'm glad, though. Perhaps that means that Sans soleil muscled its way into the top 100.

Eric von H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 1 May 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

It's not much less than the 90's films poll ... weren't there about 40 ballots for that one?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 1 May 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)
