Wrong board?

Great band though. I had a great time dancing to Yeah last night in a club in Belfast. Would be fantastic live I'm sure.

When James gets really into he starts sounding a bit like like Ian Astbury, it's kind of hilarious.

Does anyone else think he sounds a bit like 90's-era Bono on "Tribulations"?

What we want? Sex with T.V. stars! What you want? Ian Riese-Moraine! (Eastern Ma, Sunday, 3 April 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 3 April 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

I actually stayed downstairs for the first three songs. David Byrne was down there for awhile. That's not why I stayed though. I just didn't feel like getting into the crowd up there for some reason.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 3 April 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

phil afterwards I went up to 28th and had cold pizza and Guinness, that was the place to be, believe me.

I'll just say they both sound a bit like Shaun Ryder to maintain my sanity.

I noticed today that JAMS MURPHZEY co-produced Six Finger Satellite's "Law of Ruins." Interesting.

nine years pass...

this dude's music is, for some reason, very strongly tied to its time. listening to "sound of silver" especially is unbearably nostalgic for me, possibly because the lyrics deal with nostalgia. but i miss so many people i used to see often in the late 2000s

some of em

Treeship, Monday, 11 August 2014 12:04 (eleven years ago)

I agree that this music seems so inexorably tied to a period in time. I loved all three of those albums (well, the first one more for the bonus tracks) and haven't had any desire to go back and relisten to them.

Well, Shut Up And Play The Hits, which could more accurately be called Shut Up And Play The Complete Works, is one of the best live albums I've ever heard, and in some cases improves on the originals--or so it seems; anyway, it's true communion in an electric bongo chalice. Don't know how the vinyl sounds, but the DVD is fine.

seven years pass...

Anyone going to the Brooklyn Steel shows this month? I'm surprised how many people I know have, including several who left Brooklyn in the past 5 or 6 years, so the whole thing does have that nostalgic "revisiting my wild years living in Brooklyn" aura to it. I'm debating whether to go - I saw them a few years ago, but that was an awful experience and would rather not diminish my memories of their earlier shows even further.

Today, Amazon Music announced The LCD Soundsystem Holiday Special, an innovative virtual event streaming December 22, featuring the band on the heels of their sold-out 20-show residency in Brooklyn. Comedian, actor, and writer Eric Wareheim (Tim & Eric) will direct and star in the special, which also features a star-studded cast including Macaulay Culkin, Christine Ko, and Aparna Nancherla portraying the band in a ‘90s-inspired sitcom titled All My Friends. Amazon Music invites fans around the world to watch on the Amazon Music channel on Twitch and Prime Video beginning at 6 p.m. PST/9 p.m. EST on December 22.

Named for the 2007 LCD anthem, the All My Friends sitcom is set inside a fictional home shared by all of the members of LCD Soundsystem, with Eric Wareheim playing the band’s fearless leader, James Murphy. The cast also includes actors Christine Ko as Nancy Whang (vocals and keyboards), Macaulay Culkin as Pat Mahoney (drums), Tony Cavalero as Nick Millhiser (synth), Cory Loykasek as Al Doyle (guitar and synth), Aparna Nancherla as Abby Echiverri (synth), Jon Daly as Tyler Pope (bass), Rex Lee as Brian Graf (LCD Soundsystem’s manager), Luenell as the band’s tour manager, and Eric’s puppet as Korey Richey (synth). After the sitcom opens the show, the real LCD Soundsystem will take the stage to perform a career-spanning set-capped off with a special rendition of the band’s 2015 single, “Christmas Will Break Your Heart,” performed live for the first time ever.

“I’ve already conquered film, James has conquered music, but we have yet to conquer the sitcom—the HIGHEST form of art,” said Eric Wareheim. “We’ve been working on this project for 15 years, and for this show we’re unveiling a uniquely emotional perspective of the sitcom universe for the holidays—provided by one of the greatest bands of all time and my dear friends, LCD Soundsystem. I can’t believe Amazon Music is letting us do this.”

"I am similarly stunned that someone let us do this,” said James Murphy. “At least we finally get to use our Korey puppet.”

This is worth a read:

I thought it made some good points, and thought it made some other points, too, though it mostly made me feel old (figuratively and literally, being more or less an entire public school education older than Larry), and maybe my age is what elicited either or both of those aforementioned qualitative takeaways.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 January 2022 21:38 (four years ago)

yeah a lot of that is spot on - I always suspected LCD's extreme popularity with critics was for that reason, not only "that could be us" but "if it was this is exactly what we'd do, too" - borrow from a bunch of good stuff & write about "the scene" in a zillion different ways. obviously things have changed in that regard and yeah that's a better explanation of why people seemed so hostile to American Dream despite the fact that if I'm really trying to be objective it's really more or less on par with the two albums from them everyone loves.

the reporting on the cancellation of the residency is dumb, the band have no good options there, and James Murphy has always struck me as the sort of guy who is image conscious but socially awkward and willing to just go out and say "whatever, you tell me what to do" which is exactly how you bungle things like this.
