This is an article about BEING A MINORITY at Bob Jones University.

absolutego (ex machina), Sunday, 3 April 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

Bob Jon3s hated Catholics.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 3 April 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

Exactly.

absolutego (ex machina), Sunday, 3 April 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

He said it was cult.

The university’s position is that Christian behavior shows love and respect to all students, and that is enough. “We are one body in Christ,” says Dean of Students Jim Berg. “We want to accentuate our common bonds rather than reinforce distinctions.”

A Nairn (moretap), Sunday, 3 April 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

yes, interracial dating surely undermines Christ's love for humanity.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 3 April 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

the subtext to that policy, stence, is the same as the implications to "all men are created equal" in the declaration of independence. i.e. that non-white folkx != "men" or "humans"

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 3 April 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

of course!

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 3 April 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

i don't think it's a coherent ideology really, just an intensely conservative combination of evangelical christianity + old-fashioned igrained bigotry. which seems to be eroding just a little bit in recent years.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Sunday, 3 April 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

"we have a pr problem" /= "eroding"

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 3 April 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

well, it's a start. it's not like they're gonna reverse the policy.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

i mean, good things have been done for stupider reasons than trying to improve p.r.

Bob Jones is in Greenville, SC, where I live.

I know a lot of people who've gone there. It's every bit as loony and and conservative as you'd imagine, though the actual quality of the education and resources the school has is supposedly pretty high.

My film class teacher went there because they were said to have a good film program. He had just moved to South Carolina (this was the late 80's) and applied at the advice of friends and family without knowing much about what Bob Jones was like. Of course after he started going there he realized he'd made a mistake but by then he was too deep into the program to transfer anywhere without having to start school completely from scratch.

Anyway, a few years later he's teaching my class (at an arts high school where students from the Greenville County School System can attend eletive courses in various arts programs) and writes a letter to their student newspaper disputing their complaints about some local concert. He was sent a letter requesting that he never set foot on campus again. And he graduated from there!

everybody feel sorry for me becuase i grew up in greenville, sc, and bju/christian coalition owns the entire town and has a say in pretty much anything that goes on there.

they have a sort of decent music department, and in high school i had to go there a lot for piano competitions, so i used to wear short skirts to freak them out.

pretty much every student teacher we ever had was from bob jones, and they were all kind of scary. the one for the band at my high school got arrested for sleeping with one of the girls in my class! also, the demerit system is completely silly. if a man pisses off a girl, and she hits him, he gets fifty demerits (i think you get kicked out after 150 or something).

tehresa (tehresa), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

T3hresa from the noise board hails from Greenville as well. *OMG XPOST*

What did he say about the concert?

absolutego (ex machina), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

omg latebloomer! did you go to fine arts?!

tehresa (tehresa), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

yeah! you did too?

latebloomer: AKA Sir Teddy Ruxpin, Former Scientologist (latebloomer), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

yes! 1998-2000. i did voice/music theory/music history.

when did you go there?

tehresa (tehresa), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

CREEPOUT TIME

absolutego (ex machina), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

i went 1998-2001! Film/Video production.

'What did he say about the concert?

-- absolutego (j()nathan.william$@geeMaleDotCom), April 3rd, 2005.'

i dont remember, it was like an Elton John concert or something. it was the year they finished building a big arena called the Bi-Lo Center. Bob Jones III was protesting all the horrible decadent acts playing there, citing an Elton John concert as an example. Welcome to teh Bible Belt!

latebloomer: AKA Sir Teddy Ruxpin, Former Scientologist (latebloomer), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

woah dude did you know eric rivera and his associates? crazy!!

i worked in high school with a guy that went to the bob jones hs in the 80s. he was in charge of the slides for some winnie the pooh play and slipped in slides of metal bands. his file is now on their red list (or maybe it was black list, something really silly) and he is also banned from stepping foot on their property ever again!

tehresa (tehresa), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Did anyone ever have one of those bibles where every direct quotation from Jesus/YHWH was written in RED TEXT?

absolutego (ex machina), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

its a small, small, bible-thumping world.

latebloomer: AKA Sir Teddy Ruxpin, Former Scientologist (latebloomer), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

Hahahaha, the college my wife went to looked down on BJU because it was so liberal. (Fucking heathens allow its women to WEAR PANTS INSTEAD OF DRESSES — IN PUBLIC!)

Curious George Finds the Ether Bottle (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

i never saw a bob jones woman wearing pants...

tehresa (tehresa), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

Oops, maybe I'm thinking of Oral Roberts U.

Curious George Finds the Ether Bottle (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

ooh i had a roommate whose friend from hs went there... that place sounds equally creepy!

tehresa (tehresa), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

why do the christian colleges have vaguely dirty names?

BJ University?
ORAL Roberts?

tehresa (tehresa), Sunday, 3 April 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

ask freud

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Sunday, 3 April 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

what if WOLF EYES or THE BOREDOMS were to play in greenville, sc?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 3 April 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

BJU would not know about it!

greenville could use some noise shows!

latebloomer: AKA Sir Teddy Ruxpin, Former Scientologist (latebloomer), Sunday, 3 April 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

sounds like the town could've deserved a visit from GG allin when he was still alive.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 3 April 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

where is it around there that always gets the metal shows? spartanburg? some friends of mine are always going to sc to see metal, i almost went to see king diamond with them.

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 3 April 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

yeah spartanburg has ground zero, which gets a lot of metal and hardcore shows.

the death metal band Nile is from Greenville too, i believe.

latebloomer: AKA Sir Teddy Ruxpin, Former Scientologist (latebloomer), Sunday, 3 April 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

Of course there's plenty of Christian rock venues hahaha but BJU is against even that.

latebloomer: AKA Sir Teddy Ruxpin, Former Scientologist (latebloomer), Sunday, 3 April 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

Snickers bars. “Like Ruth,” he says, “black on the outside, nutty on the inside.”

Oh. My. God.

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Sunday, 3 April 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

Of course there's plenty of Christian rock venues hahaha but BJU is against even that.

even STRYPER?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 3 April 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

yes, even stryper are servants of the devil!

latebloomer: AKA Sir Teddy Ruxpin, Former Scientologist (latebloomer), Sunday, 3 April 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

or well-meaning but misguided tools of the dark lord.

latebloomer: AKA Sir Teddy Ruxpin, Former Scientologist (latebloomer), Sunday, 3 April 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

tehresa (tehresa), Monday, 4 April 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

YEAH I KNOW:-(

latebloomer: AKA Sir Teddy Ruxpin, Former Scientologist (latebloomer), Monday, 4 April 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

I lived in greenville in an apartment ACROSS THE STREET FROM BJ for the 1993-1994 school year (I was in high school at Southside). I went on their campus a few times for a couple events, one of which I think was a Forensics tournament. I remember we were given a list of rules ahead of time. One was that we had to wear skirts down to our ankles. If there was a slit, we had to safety pin it shut.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 4 April 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

I can only imagine the girls who graduated from BJ University.

MY FAVOURITE LIGHTER IS CHEESEBURGER (trigonalmayhem), Monday, 4 April 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

sarah, was that southside high school or southside christian?
i'm guessing high school from the mention of a forensics tournament.
i went there for one year!

tehresa (tehresa), Monday, 4 April 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

Not that year, I'm guessing? Southside High School. I was in the craaaaaazy IB program.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 4 April 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

one of my crazy cousins-by-marriage went there for a year (at the urging of her scary, wild-eyed, bearded father), but she was too much of smartass and got put on some kind of probation. one story she told me involved getting demerits for being seen going into a showing of warlock.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 4 April 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

that Julian Sands i tell ya what, he leads the youngins astray

latebloomer: strawman knockdowner (latebloomer), Monday, 4 April 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

my year was 1996-1997, then i said peace to ib so i could go to school at reeeeferside.

my sister went to shs starting in 1994, i think... probably one year later than you, but i know people older than her that you probably knew!

tehresa (tehresa), Monday, 4 April 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

The problem with BJU and other overly traditionalists is that, like Confucianism looking back to the time of the Zho, they think that the culture of a hundred years ago is ideal Christian culture. This is why unbiblical things like rules against interracial dating slip through. The motive of trying to find how culture fits with Christianity is legitamate, but they're looking in a totally wrong direction and trying to force Christianity into an old culture.

Their traditionalism so often ignores the whole "God created ... and saw that it was good." and the Cultural Mandate of subduing the earth. Noise music is totally part of cultivation and of the good Creation!

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 7 April 2005 03:53 (twenty years ago)

now i know how the riot grrrls felt.
