what is your "default food"?

the sort of food that is easily accessible, that you really enjoy eating, that you could eat a lot of, that you tend to keep around the house, but that isn't really a guilty pleasure or anything like that, not even a dessert, just a good fulfilling snack or even a meal if you're feeling unambitious.

for me it would be things like:

- apple juice
- challah bread
- carrots
- green peppers
- cheese (esp. brie and white cheddar)

i could basically survive on these.

Is couple of days old cold pizza a US delicacy? Never come across it before.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm in the UK. I actually think I prefer cold pizza to warm pizza...

I prefer cold babies to warm babies

A / F#m / Bm / D (Lynskey), Sunday, 3 April 2005 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Important distinction: room-temperature pizza is miles better than cold pizza. My rule is eat it within 30 hours of arrival or throw it out, and it's never made me sick.

tehresa (tehresa), Monday, 4 April 2005 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Mmm, peanut butter. I've decided I must always have apples around so I can have an excuse to eat peanut butter.

Maria (Maria), Monday, 4 April 2005 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

cheese + apples is probably my favourite simple snack

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 4 April 2005 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

This is biased somewhat toward my tastes as of late

cereal (in particular, Frosted Mini Wheats and Apple Cinnamon Cheerios. And no milk. I eat my cereal dry -- I pop them like peanuts)
plums
apples
swiss cheese
coco bread
plain old tap water

I could be perfectly happy with just those things + two or three steaks per week.

Hey Remy, what do you do to Tofu to make it taste decent. I have a habit of making it taste like old rubber no matter what I do.

kate/thank you friendly cloud (papa november), Monday, 4 April 2005 05:51 (twenty-one years ago)

try freezing cubed extra firm tofu then thawing it and squeezing out the excess water. it will give the tofu a nicer, meatier texture and make it much more absorbent of marinades/sauces.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 4 April 2005 09:28 (twenty-one years ago)

-rice
-broccoli
-eggs
-onions

I have actually survived on various permutations of the above for years at a time. In fact, I've perfected low budget healthy food into "Thing".

Mmmm, Thing. I think I might have it for dinner.

Sainsburys studded pasta is my default food - I invariably buy it every time I shop and it's what gets eaten when I can't be arsed to actually cook.

For snacking, anchovies and smoked mussels are my favourites. I tend to avoid snacking, and definitely avoid the obvious snacking foods like crisps or chocolate (except for recently, but it's eastertime).

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking about this thread today as I defaulted, foodwise, and here it is again. So, foods I always seem to have and eat:

Frozen shrimp (seconded, many many meals minutes away)
Frozen green beans (b/c I always need something green with dinner, and they go with shrimp)
Almond/cashew/sunflowerseed butter + honey
