the best show in the history of shows

Aqua Teen Hunger Force has no letter l.
Family guy does though.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 4 April 2005 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Simpsons" also has no "l", but "Arrested Development" does.

I'm bored with lesbians. I ever turned over Fingersmith 15 minutes in to watch Midsomer Muders. I mean, the chick with the Strokes hair was pretty hot, but other than that it was Melrose Place without Pool Boys. Blah.

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Monday, 4 April 2005 07:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, + lesbians...

scout (scout), Monday, 4 April 2005 07:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Lesbians annoy me. Not real lesbians - fair play to them. Just TV lesbians and rock lesbians. It's like they know me SOOO well, that just by getting hot girlz and lezzing them up they can make me like a programme/dig the music/buy their product. The problem is that it works, and it's a cynical manipulation of my labido, and I hate it.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 4 April 2005 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate it, for the same reasons! No, wait, the opposite reasons!

No, wait, when it's HOTT BOY SLASH ACTION (see Teh Libertines) it doesn't annoy me at all, in fact it is HOTTTTTT!!!

Wait, I am so confused.

Yeah, that's the chick with the Strokes hair. Me and my (female hetero) mate both had the major clit-on for her. Embarrassed and ashamed! It is not her, it is her indierock hair.

She's the girl that "boys who look like a girl" always look like.

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Monday, 4 April 2005 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeh, I approve of the one of the right. Floppy indie hair always looks good - I'm not sure how boyish she looks, mind.

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Monday, 4 April 2005 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Oooh no, short hair not quite so good - it makes her look like an old woman trying to look younger, as opposed to her looking like a young woman.

P.S. I've never seen this show before, so any judgements I make are purely superficial.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 4 April 2005 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

The mainstream media has not (yet) exploited boy-on-boy action [1] to the degree it uses girl-on-girl fantasy. Men: You have been conditioned, in the best Pavlovian manner, to drool at the idea of lesbianism.

[1] Although the Lord of the Rings movies and Smallville are clearly pointing in this direction.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 4 April 2005 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Who conidioned us?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 4 April 2005 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

It uses it in music, it does not use it in television, unfortunately. :-(

Ironic, considering what a *market* there is for this, considering by the bulk of TV fan fict.

Though I suppose lesbianism is seen as something "slightly naughty" and spicy, but not really challenging. A woman will sit through a lesbian scene and roll her eyes. How would a straight man react to a boyslash scene? (And I'm not talking about overtly gay-pitched programmes like Queer As Folk, etc.)

Masonic Cathedral (kate), Monday, 4 April 2005 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess we'll find out when that gay western comes out. (Later this year?)

Curious George Finds the Ether Bottle (Rock Hardy), Monday, 4 April 2005 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone watching this just for sex scenes must be pretty bored. I like how Melrose Placey it's gotten this season. That creepy hidden camera roommate guy of Shane and Jenny's, the creepy Wake Up, I'm Fat lady's creepy movie producer that's quasi-chickenhawking Shane, Tina's creepy lawyer that tried to fuck her and Tina's creepy rich bitch lover, etc. Dana finally breaking up with her creepy fiancee and finding out she was cheating on her with Melissa Rivers (ew! haha). This is the best soap opera shit I ever saw.

Speaking of hidden camera roommate guy, I like how every male character gets shitcanned/vilified by way of exhibiting extreme assholism within a few episodes. Like the marine biologist manatee guy who looked like Conor Oberst.

Hatred of new theme song thirded. That's that band Bettie that was on one of the episodes this season, and they stink. Even that fucking Murmurs song would be better.
Thing is, the closing music is always awesome and perfect for what is happening and something almost always already in my record collection. Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, Lucinda Williams....Iron and Wine "Naked As We Came" when Shane cut Jenny's hair! My mouth fell open when the song started.

@@r0n h. z@nd3r$ (AaronHz), Friday, 8 April 2005 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

That's funny, if I think about it I find them to be significantly less so IRL. That's a really fucking stupid thing to think about though, and makes all kinds of assumptions that shouldn't be made.

@@r0n h. z@nd3r$ (AaronHz), Friday, 8 April 2005 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's the deal with the Bettie shit. The show's creator broke up with her gf and started dating one of the chicks in Bettie. All the Bettie shit in the new season is a direct result of this. How annoying and assinine -- "oooh, I want to put my new gf in all my episodes!" The band is terrible.

Their PR team sucks. I've only seen the 2nd seas. but Shane reminds me an OBSCENE amount of a guy I know from New York. It's like they modeled her whole schtick on this guy -- haircut, swagger, toothy grin, dress sense, all. Of course I think she's scorching.

how did i miss this thread?

i am completely fucking addicted to this show. i completely fucking love it! and i completely fucking hate it! we're on season two in nz, i'm relieved its getting better. like the characters actually have personalities now! except shane. i'm sorry but i don't get the shane thing, she bugs the fuck out of me. yeah yeah she's hot, i can't deny this, but her butchness is so forced, its like, god, can't you just BE butch instead of trying oh so hard to act it? what i don't get about her character is how all the girls she pulls think she's so fucking great. and its like but c'mon she is a hairdresser!!! and she never does or says anything remotely interesting that'd make me come back for more. all style (and yes what a style it is) but no substance. for this reason i am LOVING camryn manheim's character, finally someone in the show whose whole purpose is to be a bitch to shane. that gives me a bigger boner than shane herself.

yes the betty theme has to go, this is agreed. but season one's fetusmusic theme was equally appalling, in its own special way.

and everyone on that fucking show needs to eat a tonne of something. anything! dear god, how can i find these women sexy when they ALL look like they would break the fuck apart at the mere sight of a vibrator??? fuck man, i don't have anything against skinny women, but do ALL of them (bar pam grier) have to be that skinny? yeah yeah i know, tv industry standards of acceptable femininity etc. and i totally feel EVERYONE'S jenny hatred. die you whinging crying self-pitying little wannabe pixie. your writing makes carrie bradshaw look like a genius.

fuck now what do i like about this show? well um its the only show on tv about lesbians. and over the months that i've made myself watch this shit for the sole fact that it is about lesbians, i have developed a fondness for some of the characters, particularly dana. i'm really bummed that kit's transgender friend is no longer on the show, now there was a storyline with potential.

It's pretty rough. Jenny is obsessing over how to get revenge on DAWN WEINER FROM WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE because she gave her shitty book a bad review in some lesbian hipster mag. Phase 1: Throw temper tantrum in magazine's office Phase 2: Scream her name at her window in the middle of the night in full on black and white Streetcar homage. Phase 3: Get Max to cyber stalk the Dawn Weiner's gf so she can track her down and seduce her. Jenny is such a fucking baby it's not even cute anymore.

I am kind of looking forward to Max telling new gf (and boss' daughter) "BTW I HAVE NO PENIS" next week, though.

I guess tonight's the end? Still don't have Showtime. But we watched through Season 5. I liked the return to more humor, but man, some clumsy plotting choices in Seasons 4 and 5, and I feel like they lost track of Shane's character in 5, which feels like a general low point. The season began with the first out-and-out dud of an episode, and did away with the opening/teaser conceit of the previous four seasons. I didn't quite buy Kit's violent breakdown, or find the women-in-prison jokes funny, or enjoy watching the first season re-dramatized again as a bad Hollywood movie. But it can still be so good. And then there's Max, who has made the show worthwhile even is he's on the margins.

After a wildly uneven Season 5, Season 6 began with some nice twists and hotness, but went rapidly downhill with what felt like a bunch of amateur guest directors making one ill-advised choice after another, the tone going utterly haywire--the worst moments being the "comedic" music. The second-to-last episode seemed to have a real director, and showed how good the show could be. The last episode was just crazy-bad, like anger-inducing bad. What a cheat!
