I liked her on Iron Chef last night, which was good because I feared that Food Network would pick someone lame for the first female iron chef.

Leon Bluth (Ex Leon), Monday, 4 April 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

me too. i think she's ten times as knowledgeable/capable as bobby flay. also, you hardly ever see an iron chef (or challenger) presenting a greek menu.

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 April 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

i thought this thread wz about lions that played the thumb piano

mark s (mark s), Monday, 4 April 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

it can be if you'd like.

jody von bulow (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 April 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

but she was rubbish last night!!! we were all screaming fix as they couldn't have their newest ironchef lose first time out. The other bloke's menu was waaaaaay better, hers was completely half arsed. Jeffrey Steingarten didn't seem to like any of her dishes and yet she still won??? hmmmm

ceebee, Monday, 4 April 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

jeffrey steingarten doesn't think any women can cook.

i thought cora's menu looked great! nothing rubbish about it.

jody von bulow (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 April 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

I've just finished reading one of his books and he certainly raves about a couple of women chefs in that so I'm not sure that's true.

That potato gelato though - pure cobblers, a good try yes but if it doesn't go right - don't serve it!

The octopus on top of the skordalia - no need at all, and the moussaka - oh jesus no (I tasted a hoisin duck ravioli a few weeks ago - there's one fusion the world does in no way need)

ceebee, Monday, 4 April 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

don't make me post the pix of squid-in-its-own-ink pizza ceebee!!

mark s (mark s), Monday, 4 April 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

mmmm, lovely.

ceebee, Monday, 4 April 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

prize-winning presentation:

The octopus on top of the skordalia - no need at all

last week i had grilled octopus and skordalia in the same course and enjoyed them thoroughly.

jody von bulow (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 April 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

and speaking as someone who's not a big fan of eggplant, i'd love to try potato moussaka.

potato gelato -- stranger things have happened. recently on iron chef one of the challengers made a veal sorbet. now THAT'S putrid.

jody von bulow (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 April 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

I know what you mean about the gelato, but they all pulled a face, none of them liked it and then when she's asked "did you try it" she fronts it and gets in. She won with her originality score, but what's the point in being original (or giving points for it) if it just doesn't work?

I'm taking this far too serious aren't I? but, I don't know, she may have been nervous and all, but she didn't seem quite so consumate or confident as the other Iron chefs. They should have got Angela Hartnett over to do it, she'd have kicked arse

ceebee, Monday, 4 April 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

both aubergine and potato were in the moussaka at the greek restaurant we went to on saturday. i'd not had it like that before, but it was very tasty and made sense. potato gelato, on the other hand, sounds kind of rank.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 4 April 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

her nmoussaka missed out the aubergine completely, but also missed out the lamb and instead used some minced duck breast and duck livers (which, you know, wouldn't be so bad, not in the slightest authentic but probably tasty) but then she jacked it up with chilli and 5 spice, which, after my recent taste of the hoi sin rav, could only be a very bad thing indeed (for me of course).

ceebee, Monday, 4 April 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

ok. that sounds suspect.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 4 April 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

It did look a little suspect but I had more respect for that than the competitor's offerings, which were basically high-end takes on the Applebee's menu.

Leon Bluth (Ex Leon), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

but i bet they tasted better, which is all that should matter.

()ops (()()ps), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Not really.

Leon Bluth (Ex Leon), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Touche.

()ops (()()ps), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

Douche.

Leon Bluth (Ex Leon), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Use of theme ingredient and originality should have much less weight in the overall rating. say, 40 for taste, 5 each for the other two. Plating should only be a factor if there is a tie.

xpost omg you're a genius!!!!

()ops (()()ps), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

tee hee

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

If originality didn't matter everyone would just make fries and mashed potatoes. Which sounds incredibly boring, but you're welcome to it.

Leon Bluth (Ex Leon), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

That assumes that fries and mashed potatos are the tastiest things that can be made with potatoes. If you want something that's novel but tastes like shit, you're welcome to it.

()ops (()()ps), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Oops dazzles again.

Personally I'd like to see the big TV chefs compete in a venue like this. Alton Brown vs Emeril, for instance, vs the 30-minute Long Island woman.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

Alton isn't a chef though.

()ops (()()ps), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

Alton Brown is not a chef, he is a cook (by his own admission.)

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

xpost! and Emeril's irritating as hell, regardless of how delicious his food is.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

So how has the American Iron Chef been measuring up to the original in general anyway?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

The Chairman Kaga type is awful, and Bobby Flay is a jerk (he yells at his assistant chefs constantly) and sometimes there are errors in the on-screen text (listening him as "Bobby Fley" ferinstance) but it's still worth watching. Alton Brown as commentator is great, and there's not as much tedious back story in the beginning.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 4 April 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

The Kaga type needs capes! Or a satin cravat.

Bobby Flay is a jackass, which makes it extremely satisfying when he loses.

Leon Bluth (Ex Leon), Monday, 4 April 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

plus, me being American not Japanese, the food all looks a lot tastier. I actually know and have tasted most of the ingredients.

()ops (()()ps), Monday, 4 April 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

I've only seen the episode with catfish as the ingredient, but I enjoyed it and a lot of stuff looked tasty.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 4 April 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

It just occurred to me that Alton Brown is the Isaac Asimov of food. A popularizer and explainer, but don't ask him to write any action. (Still, AB is my favorite famous-food-person.)

Curious George Finds the Ether Bottle (Rock Hardy), Monday, 4 April 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if Isaac Asimov could cook.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 4 April 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Rick Bayless got robbed.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 4 April 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

OTM.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 4 April 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

I think they just deducted points for his soul patch.

()ops (()()ps), Monday, 4 April 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if Isaac Asimov could cook.
He certainly could eat.
