whereabouts are you staying?

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 09:19 (eighteen years ago)

in a hostel - no idea which, my mates booked it.

the next grozart, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 11:53 (eighteen years ago)

me and grozart are going, we are staying in gothic point hostel.
we will win.

klankton, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 13:41 (eighteen years ago)

ok Klankton that's four metro stops from us and seven from the festival site (the forum) but don't worry the stops are quite close together.

I am v sceptical; I googled to make sure that really is the hostel name...it sounds a bit...well, spooky....

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 13:56 (eighteen years ago)

I am going with about 10 other people, we are sharing two apartments somewhere in Eixample. Totes looking fwd to it.

braveclub, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 13:58 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, I've been to Gothic Point a couple of times, is a good hostel, not too many ghouls despite the name.

klankton, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder if Antony and Iggy and They Might be Giants all did a big finale of "I Shall Be Released" or "All Along The Watchtower".

Would seriously like to make this my one festival/one holiday this year

DJ Mencap, Monday, 3 March 2008 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

Polvo AND Eric's Trip! Oh 1994 why couldn't you wait until I could actually go to festivals before happening again ;;;;

(Also some other great and actually NEW bands, seeing as how I am usually suspicious of the whole reunion thing, but, sigh, don't think there's any way I could make this)

a passing spacecadet, Monday, 3 March 2008 11:39 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

What can I expect from it? How many stages are there, what's the festival site like etc?

Chris in Belfast, Thursday, 27 March 2008 13:29 (seventeen years ago)

I should really buy my flights for this before they get woah expensive. i have no idea about accomodation either. camping does one think?

Upt0eleven, Thursday, 27 March 2008 14:44 (seventeen years ago)

Do you really want to sleep in a tent, in Spain, in May, is the question? It'll be fucking boiling by about 9am.

Matt DC, Thursday, 27 March 2008 14:46 (seventeen years ago)

you could use this. I did: http://www.ownersdirect.co.uk/

Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 27 March 2008 14:47 (seventeen years ago)

i would point out that there is no campsite at the festival site.

Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 27 March 2008 14:47 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i know, it's not especially appealing but it's cheap i think that's what my friends are doing.

Upt0eleven, Thursday, 27 March 2008 14:50 (seventeen years ago)

There's 4 or 5 stages I think (it's a couple of years since I've been) - and one of them's a big indoor room, all seated (about 3000 people - you can buy tickets for shows in here for a euro or two, or risk queuing), maybe a 'dance tent' thing as well. The site is quite amazing (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_Universal_Forum_of_Cultures) loads o weird structures and stuff. And it's by the sea, but not that you could actually go to the sea while you were there. Weird token system for buying food and drink. Spirt measures much more generous than beer.

I'm well excited about this year's festival.

Bocken Social Scene, Thursday, 27 March 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)

Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 12:31 (seventeen years ago)

we're staying in an apartment near barceloneta. not sure how much i'll wanna stay on site thru the night tho (it's 5 til 5 each night right?).

blueski, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 13:14 (seventeen years ago)

We're staying near Wah-Wah records, according to my friend who has been before. I AM EXCITED.

emil.y, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 13:49 (seventeen years ago)

I'm already bored of making primaveratimetablelookoutforclashes.xls, but I can't see any major disasters. Ellen Alien or El Guincho in the early hours of Saturday maybe, but I expect I'll have fallen asleep by then anyway.

Bocken Social Scene, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 13:54 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, the timetable is up now? Excellent opportunity for procrastinating. I've been pretty excited about seeing El Guincho, so I think Ellen Allien will have to be missed. Bah.

emil.y, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 13:56 (seventeen years ago)

Alien will probably be on for longer, I saw El Guincho a couple of times last month and it was a fairly short set. Was hoping he'd be on later than 3:15 'cos it'd be great with the sun coming up.

Bocken Social Scene, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 14:03 (seventeen years ago)

Way to make the timetable almost unreadable, Primavera website people. I will have to draw up my own .xls when I get home. Did notice that Doctor Octagon clashes with Public Enemy, waaaah.

emil.y, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 14:06 (seventeen years ago)

it always is, Emily especially when you print it.

I wish I was going again :-C ....

Grandpont Genie, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)

also, take note of which payment service, Paypal or one of the others, you used to purchase your ticket as you will have to go to a different Portakabin to collect your pass for the festival depending on which one you used. It is a good idea if you have time to go earlier in the day before the festival opens to do this, as they always take ages over it.

Grandpont Genie, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 14:14 (seventeen years ago)

I'm going! I'm going! MF'ing Animal Collective MF'ers!

the next grozart, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

It's a bit shoddy, bands are on longer than I'd expect them to be, the formatting's really boring, and I couldn't be arsed doing anythign to the non-Forum gigs, but it should be easier to decipher than the proper one. Do some work, Emily. http://www.iwantwintergreen.com/Primavera2008.xls

Bocken Social Scene, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 15:04 (seventeen years ago)

I shouldn't really be procrastinating much more. Only 8 days left!

I can't believe Tindersticks clash with DJ Assault ;_;

emil.y, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:50 (seventeen years ago)

We're having trouble finding a hostel that will accomodate us all! Any suggestions (think there are about 8 of us going and we'd rather not be scattered about!)

the next grozart, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 23:54 (seventeen years ago)

So, how did everybody enjoy it? I had a great time, my first foreign (and non-camping) festival and I'll definitely be back. The weather turned out pretty great too, aside from the horrific monsoon at 5am on Sunday morning walking back to the hostel.

Highlights -

Devo
Bon Iver
Portishead
Les Savy Fav
Mission of Burma (if only for closing with This Is Not A Photograph, Max Ernst and Academy Fight song)

Disappointments -

Public Enemy (only 2/ of the album they were supposed to play in full!)
Apparat (35 mins late and seemed a bit half-assed)
No Age (enjoyable but I think I'd built it up too much)
Shellac (my fault - I stood too close and ended up with a sore neck. good show but I should've sat on the steps with my friends)
Missing Why?, British Sea Power and Deerhunter due to clashes.

Chris in Belfast, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 15:18 (seventeen years ago)

That should read 2/3 of It Takes A Nation of Millions, sorry.

Chris in Belfast, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 15:19 (seventeen years ago)

ha ha yes, we got in the cab just before that started and then only had to run for about 10 seconds in it in the end

blueski, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 17:02 (seventeen years ago)

i got caught out in that fucking rain for the full length of it. not fun!

dog latin, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

Oh and aside from having a hideous PROPER fight with my best mate while watching Dinosaur Jr, it was fantastic!

Really enjoyed Boris - absolutely breathtaking;
Devo were a million times better than I thought they'd be;
El Guincho provided the rave;
Dr Octagan brought teh funnies;
Animal Collective, well that was straight after the fight I had so I was a bit shaken but Fireworks snapped me out of it;
Public Enemy got a bit boring after about 7 tracks
Explosions In The Sky were a bit dull and twinkly and people kept telling us to shut up
The Sonics were just fine.

dog latin, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 20:10 (seventeen years ago)

Loved:

Public Enemy (Terrordome+Fight The Power to finish made up for only 1/2 of ITANOMTHUB)
Devo (As much energy as PE, and an amazing set)
Six Organs of Admittance (Chasny, Ambrogio, Neilson - all on top form)
The Silver Jews (and I'm not even a fan on record)
Atlas Sound (Beautiful music, lovely atmosphere, funny guy)

But the crowner was the El Guincho --> Holy Fuck closer on the Friday. El Guincho was amazing, and Holy Fuck ended up with a massive stage invasion at 6am.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3171/2552464057_49cd0a487b.jpg

Oh, and I met one of Fuck Buttons' mother during their set. She was very proud. Weird!

Mister Craig, Friday, 6 June 2008 06:34 (seventeen years ago)

Not to mention Dirty Projectors, Shellac, Animal Collective, who were all amazing. All my prior worries ended up being unfounded - beer tokens worked fine, quick service most of the time, queues were short for most things, and prices were okay for a festival. Toilets were in abundance and the place is just beautiful.

Mister Craig, Friday, 6 June 2008 06:37 (seventeen years ago)

it's definitely the best festival i've ever been to. much better than paying £120 to roll around in my own dirt. el guincho was absolutely amazing i must admit!

the next grozart, Friday, 6 June 2008 08:00 (seventeen years ago)

didn't catch El Guincho :(

Why? was the musical highlight of my weekend while Shellac came out with probably the best live performance I've ever witnessed.

Upt0eleven, Friday, 6 June 2008 08:25 (seventeen years ago)

Devo! Devo! Devo! Having been sceptical about the proliferation of old men in old bands these days I turned into a gibbering fangirl as soon as I saw these guys. They just did not let up.

Aside from that, hell yes to El Guincho. I'd been bigging him up for ages and fortunately he did not disappoint. I was completely dead on my little dancing feet by Holy Fuck but still somehow managed to ride the surge all the way up to the stage. Aaagh.

Also need to give props to Mount Eerie and the Notwist for being a lovely way to open the festival, David Thomas Broughton for hiding behind a tree, Mandy for giving birth to Ben Fuck Buttons, and pretty much everything else for being the best festival EVAHHH.

emil.y, Friday, 6 June 2008 12:12 (seventeen years ago)

I thought the fact they looked like a bunch of aging factory workers totally aided their schtick.

the next grozart, Friday, 6 June 2008 13:31 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, me too in the end, but I hadn't really thought about that aspect beforehand. Devo are a pretty different prospect to most of the *yawn* reforming acts about these days.

That's an really high hit rate - o shi do I ever need money and quickly

big fatass Paul Ross (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 14:26 (seventeen years ago)

What's the betting on Ghostface doing Supreme Clientele in full?

Number None, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 14:43 (seventeen years ago)

There's 4 or 5 stages I think (it's a couple of years since I've been) - and one of them's a big indoor room, all seated (about 3000 people - you can buy tickets for shows in here for a euro or two, or risk queuing)

Is this system still the case? And would this lead to missing out on acts?

barnaby, Thursday, 19 February 2009 22:33 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think I actually went to the indoor Auditorium last year, so I'm not sure what the deal was with queuing or having advance 'tickets'. I guess it's possible that you'd have to miss a bit of someone else to queue to get in, especially if you were walking from either of the furthest away stages, but a lot would depend on the timings - this timetable (http://www.iwantwintergreen.com/Primavera2008.xls) I knocked up last year might give you an idea, but bear in mind I made the sets much longer than they'd ever be (Times New Viking for an hour?). One thing about the Auditorium is the sets finish before midnight, whereas the outdoor stages are on 'til to 2am at the earliest. Last year only 10 acts were indoors, and of them Portishead did a set outdoors as well - MBV are doing this this year too.

I'm gutted that barring miracles I'm not going to be able to afford this.

chord simple (j.o.n.a), Friday, 20 February 2009 09:34 (seventeen years ago)

can you get day tickets for this, the site itself only offers full weekend passes. the 09 line up looks very tempting

vain_bowers, Friday, 20 February 2009 11:16 (seventeen years ago)

Have been able to in the past, I guess you have to wait until they announce the days bands are playing. Also I think on Wednesday when all these names came out they said this is only 60odd% of the bands, with more to come.

chord simple (j.o.n.a), Friday, 20 February 2009 11:50 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not going to be able to afford it this year either, so I'm thinking do a 'one year Primavera, the next year ATP' alternating system from now on. Shame, as ATP tickets are much more expensive than Primavera ones, but when you add in flights and apartment and cost of living it is just not doable.

I only saw one act at the Auditorium last year (Young Marble Giants), and didn't really enjoy the atmosphere. Advance tickets were pretty mandatory if you wanted to get in anywhere near the start of the set; you couldn't take beer indoors; no photography allowed, if I remember correctly; it's seated, which is rubbish at gigs anyway; a bunch of other little irksome things that don't come to mind straight away.

emil.y, Friday, 20 February 2009 11:52 (seventeen years ago)
