Defend the Indefensible: Changing your ILX login to something completely different

Have been thinking about changing my ILX login name (and email) to something completely different and unrecognisable, so I can post and only the people who know me fairly well will be able to pick up on who it is.

Pros and cons, anyone? Is this just a bit of a twattish thing to do?

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

Hrmmmm. This is a bit of a prickly question for me.

Lots of people have done it (including myself, yeah, I admit, for a brief time).

It seems like the intent is the thing. If you're doing it to deliberately deceive someone else (i.e. you are stalking them, as has been done to me on this board in the past) then it is dud. If you are doing it to *avoid* nastiness which is directed your way, then it's a bit more understandable.

I hope I'd be able to pick you out, Caitlin, as I enjoy your posts.

Confusion Is Kate (kate), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 09:49 (twenty years ago)

of course, the *really* twattish thing to do would be to create another account *now* and use both on this thread, so then you'd never guess it was me! Mwahahah etc!

(we have 2 outwardly-visible IPs here, so it wouldn't necessarily be obvious to the mods either)

Or, if you really want to confuse people, start sharing a login name with someone! (especially if they share your first name ha ha!)

Confusion Is Kate (kate), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, one time people were saying "Yeah kate" and I was like "um, I don't see any kate!!!" like there was an invisible man in the room that only I couldn't see! (Then Momus clued me in, funnily enough)

Confusion Is Kate (kate), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

That's what I do

The Horse of Babylon (the pirate king), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

I did this for the specific reason that I didn't want an address which had all-over admin privileges. I enjoyed being Tico Tico and he served his purpose in lessening my attachment to the boards enough that I can comfortably take holidays from posting to them. (I've never succeeded in stopping lurking though.)

(Or, if you're *really* posh, have your butler post for you!)
I am sad, I laughed at this! haha.
I always get a bit confused when I see a name I don't recognise but everyone does. I change my user name quite a lot, but I always keep the same email. It's not twattish if you want to change it for change's sake, but if there are dark reasons behind it, then perhaps it is twattish!

I'm Kate & so's my wife! (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

Well, also, there's a difference between changing your fullname (which I do every week or so - login name and email stays the same) and changing your entire login.

Confusion Is Kate (kate), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

I changed my name from ipsofacto about 6 months ago to symbolise a change in myself and how I posted. To sever ties with the past.

Now if that isn't twattish sounding I dunno what is.

I need to admit: every time I read WE ARE THE KATE!!! I want to sing "We are the Kate! We are the people!"

Changing my login would mean people wouldn't get confused between me and Other Caitlin

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 10:10 (twenty years ago)

Is there another Caitlin?!

Kate's evil twin (papa november), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 10:10 (twenty years ago)

Oh yes, me too, I haven't ever actually changed my login name, just the name that ppl see!

Oh god, now you've got that stuck in my head, Caitlin! Why not become another Kate? Then we could really fulfil our Bill Drummond dreams!

Confusion Is Kate (kate), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, i figure there no big deal about changing that part considering if there's any confusion people can look off to the right to figure things out.

Kate's evil twin (papa november), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

(x-post, I've changed my settings so that the login name is displayed all the time, so I never get confused about display name changes and multiple persons with the same name any more.)

Confusion Is Kate (kate), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

There is another Caitlin. She has posted pics on the "you in your underwear" thread. I have not.

Three Kates would be a bad idea - we'd be the KKK.

See, I was thinking about changing everything *including* the login name, so that doesn't show up either.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

I only finally registered an account as Kate when someone started posting as "Kate" on the Dave Matthews band thread. So I completely condone changing your ID if someone is posting with your name on a thread you wouldn't be caught dead on!

Confusion Is Kate (kate), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

i for one, am totally against this sickening trend.

You're just jealous coz you're not a Kate.

So, whats all this then? ;-)

would you mind if I change my login to ipso fatso from now on?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

Go for it.

Actually the first time I saw that thread I had a sudden flash of anger for a second because as it happens I am fat (not to mention paranoid) and I thought it was a nasty thread someone had started about me.

Kate, plain and tall. (papa november), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

I though about changing my username to "cash flagg", but I kind of like being Pashmina.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

Pashmina sounds warm and comforting.

Kate, plain and tall. (papa november), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

I also like the fact that idiots always think you are a girl.

We Are All Full Of Kate (kate), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

I thought you were a girl Pashmina.

Hahahaha!

Kate, plain and tall. (papa november), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

Oh dear.

::a bit embarrassed::

I guess our mindmeld failed there, Kate.

(I meant, idiots like C*l*m etc.)

We Are All Full Of Kate (kate), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

No I think it's funny. To be honest I just never really gave it much thought. It's like primroses, they sound mauve or something but they're yellow.

Kate, plain and tall. (papa november), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

I always thought primroses were pink!

We Are All Full Of Kate (kate), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

Oh shit. Maybe I have that round the wrong way.

Kate, plain and tall. (papa november), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

and primrose hill is green!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

What do I know? Primroses don't even grow in Australia.

Kate, plain and tall. (papa november), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

I could very well be wrong. Hang on...

We Are All Full Of Kate (kate), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

Haha irl I actually look like erik the viking or something, well i did before i shaved my beard off.

calum's whole "silly girl pashmina, i bet you read cosmopolitan really" thing made me laugh mightily.

I picked the name b/c of that chatroom spoof that runs in the guardian, where one of the participants is called "pashmina". I thought it looked kind of cool and funny. (unlike the chatroom spoof, which is lame) I previously used to post under a minor variation on my real(ish) name "norman phay" (or many variations thereof)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

Google image search seems to indicate primroses come in a variety or colours, but yellow seems to be the most common.

Kate, plain and tall. (papa november), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty sure primroses are yellow. (x-post, gah.)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

There are pink primroses:

http://www.dupont.com/corpB420010615/environment/wetland/images/primrose.jpg

And yellow ones:

http://www.hikingswitzerland.com/Primrose%20Path.jpg

And even mauve ones!

http://www.terra.hu/haznov/kis/Primula.farinosa.alpigena.4.jpg

Wow, more than I ever knew about primroses before.

We Are All Full Of Kate (kate), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

Cornflowers are the ones that get me confused. Mention that someone has cornflower coloured eyes and I think that someone has got yellow eyes.

Alix with an I ? (alix), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

My brane tells me that cornflower = cornflour = white and powdery and thickens gravy.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:26 (twenty years ago)

Drizzle me with the gravy of your eyes...

now *there's* a chatup line!

We Are All Full Of Kate (kate), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

that chatroom spoof that runs in the guardian, where one of the participants is called "pashmina"

i thought that WAS you... i thought it was a real chatroom :(
