A Fiji magistrate has sentenced a Victorian tourist and a Fijian man to two years' jail for what the judge called a "shameful" and "disgusting" homosexual act.

Gay activists have condemned the decision.

Retired university lecturer Thomas Maxwell McCoskar, 55, of Victoria [Australia], and Dhirendra Nandan, 23, had pleaded guilty to having sex in Nadi over Easter and asked the court for leniency, the Fiji Times reported.

Gay sex is illegal in Fiji and carries a maximum jail term of 14 years.

Magistrate Syed Muhktar Shah said in Suva on Tuesday McCoskar and Nandan were guilty of "something so disgusting that it would make any person vomit".

The magistrate said McCoskar's actions bordered on pedophilia. "If you wanted to have fun, you should have stayed in Australia instead of trying to come to Fiji and exploit our young boys," he said.

Jailing the pair for what had been a consensual act between adults violated human rights, Australia's Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby said.

A consular official was visiting McCoskar, a Foreign Affairs Department spokeswoman said.

The department's travel warnings does not mention that homosexuality is a crime in Fiji, but reminds travellers they are subject to local laws.

Sex tourism versus postcolonial pride.

there's a surprising lack of editorial colour for a Hun piece

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 7 April 2005 03:41 (twenty years ago)

Well with the guy himself saying it makes him vomit, I guess they felt they didn't need it!

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 7 April 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

I mean I can see why places like Fiji want to crack down on the trade in older civil servants doing their young boy sex tours - when it is CHILDREN - but this is just wrong.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 7 April 2005 03:46 (twenty years ago)

If 23 is too young, what's old enough? 40?

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 7 April 2005 03:54 (twenty years ago)

the dirty old man rule says 34 and a half.

The Tongan military and English missionaries were other prominent invaders of the mid-1800s. The missionaries sought to convert the tribal chiefs, but they had notable failures - the Reverend Thomas Baker was eaten in 1867 and his shoe is exhibited in the Fiji Museum.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 7 April 2005 04:29 (twenty years ago)

Homosexuality is totally accepted in the Cook Islands, and has been for thousands of years. I'm surprised it's not in other polynsesian locales

I get this mental cartoon image of 500 natives eating this bloke whole, burping and spitting out a shoe.

Homosexuality is totally accepted in the Cook Islands, and has been for thousands of years.

Yeah but look at what happened recently on Christmas Island where underage sex etc was supposedly ok with the elders and now theyve all been done for pedophilia.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 7 April 2005 06:57 (twenty years ago)

i think you mean pitcairn island trayce. christmas island is off the coast of WA.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 7 April 2005 06:58 (twenty years ago)

Ah yeah I knew I had the wrong place whoops! heh.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 7 April 2005 07:07 (twenty years ago)

also it was the descendants of the mutineers of the bounty who were into the underage sex, so it probably hasn't gone on for 1000s of years.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 7 April 2005 07:09 (twenty years ago)

The Bounty mutiny wasn't *that* long ago

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 7 April 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

I read the first line, of the article, three times and the rest, of the article, once, before I realised what "victorian" meant.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 7 April 2005 10:11 (twenty years ago)

Me too! I pictured him looking like Charles Dickens.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 7 April 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

It's those Edwardian tourists that you have to look out for.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 7 April 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

well it is in an australian newspaper so i suppose the 'victorian' adjective requires no explanation here

gem (trisk), Thursday, 7 April 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

yeah, I got that, after a moment.

I thought, at first, they meant "a Victorian time-tourist".

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 7 April 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

yes i realise that's what you thought, but given that you're not australian it's quite understandable

gem (trisk), Thursday, 7 April 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

I didn't think about the australian state, immediately, and was a little confused.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 7 April 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

sorry

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 7 April 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

haha don't be sorry. it really is quite understandable that not everyone immediately thinks of australian states.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 7 April 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

haha, sorry--I was just being silly, in the end, by going on about it.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 7 April 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

Yet we're all supposed to immediately think of US states and UK towns?

[not having a go at your RJG, more a comment on the perceived/false hierarchy of global importance]

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 7 April 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

I don't know what to say.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 7 April 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

where is bickering?

Alex in DHIRENDRA NANDAN (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

funny that a nation of cannibals is getting down on two dudes eating each other's meat. WTF?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

HOW DO YOU KNOW IT WAS MEAT-EATING EISBAR? Were you THERE?

Accomplice! Jail for you!

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

HOW DO YOU KNOW IT WAS MEAT-EATING EISBAR? Were you THERE?

well logic says that it had to be either or both (a) wiener-eating; and/or (b) rump-roast eating!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

You seem extremely well versed in the ways of things that would make ordinary people vomit. You are a person of interest to Fiji now.

Maybe it was just good old-fashioned mutual masturbation! Hmm?

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:31 (twenty years ago)

Vegetarians eat chocolate too you know.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

beef jerky! or pulled pork!!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:33 (twenty years ago)

In fact I'm sucking languidly on a long hard tasty shaft of dripping chocolate right now.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

"long pig" indeed!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

Interfemoral "intercourse" then?

(No, you can't use the joke about "frottage cheese". It's mine.)

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

A Fiji magistrate has sentenced a Victorian tourist and a Fijian man to two years' jail for what the judge called a "shameful" and "disgusting" homosexual act.

blimey, did Oscar Wilde borrow HG Wells' time machine and travel forward to Fiji?

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 8 April 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

well logic says that it had to be either or both (a) wiener-eating; and/or (b) rump-roast eating!

Now now. It's possible that rump roast was shisk-kabobed onto a...skewer, without either party feasting on succulent beefcake.
