So, guess what happened when the College Republicans brought the Ultimate Warrior to town

Dom already posted a thread about it over on ILWWE, but I figure you folks might get a kick out of it too:
Ultimate Warrior Speech Turns Into Near Riot
(written by Dave Meltzer, then stolen several times over)

The Ultimate Warrior gave a speech infront of University of Connecticut students last night that almost broke out into a riot. Major arguments broke out after many considered Warrior's thoughts to be homophobic and racist.

People started yelling at Warrior as he spoke. Warrior at one point started yelling and stomping his feet, telling everyone to not talk while he is and to ask questions after his speech. Officers were eventually called in to calm things down.

The group that brought Warrior in, the College Republicans, apologized heavily for bringing Warrior in after the speech ended. Statements that really got the crowd upset were when Warrior said "queering don't make the world work" and told an Iranian girl to "get a towel." Warrior also admitted that he used steroids while in wrestling and told any other wrestler they should be as honest as he was.

in other news, pro-wrestling fansites/newsboards have not improved their webcoding skills in the last 6 years.

kingfish maximum overdrunk (Kingfish), Thursday, 7 April 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

and get this, the College Republicans actually issued an apology about it.

also, note that sharing steroids with Vince McMahon for 4 years isn't necessarily the best for your mental health in the long run, tho it seems to insure a good push or three into the spotlight...

kingfish maximum overdrunk (Kingfish), Thursday, 7 April 2005 06:14 (twenty years ago)

See, that's completely awesome. Fuck Ultimate Warrior.

The part about him stomping his feet completely cracked me up!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 7 April 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

Ten years ago, it was the UConn paper getting accused of racism & bigotry & all that good stuff. Nice to see they've moved the outside-the-box thinking to orgs not directly affiliated w/ the university - more deniability that way.

I'm also fond of the way the "quotes" are ordered. First, homophobia. Then, the racial thing. And, last but most definitely not least, STEROIDS.

And no one thought to throw a chair at UW?!?

Alex in TCBY (ex machina), Thursday, 7 April 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

from the apology:

"We have written letters of apology to several groups and organizations on campus that represent the people toward whom many of the Warrior's comments were directed. A short, but not complete, list of these groups would consist of the Rainbow Center, AQUA, QUAD, the African American Cultural Center, the Asian American Cultural Center, the Puerto Rican/Latin American Cultural Center, the Iranian Students Association, and the Women's Center."

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 7 April 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

Jon: I can't recall details, but there was some on-campus furor & picketing re: some student-written op-ed pieces that weren't exactly A) open-minded, or B) careful w/ word choice. One group (say, the aforementioned African American Cultural Center) would picket in front of the Daily Campus building (right next to my dorms!), protesting the dumb shit printed in the paper, & the paper would issue an apology, and then, in a few months, the Daily Campus would end up pissing off another group. Of course, this was the op-ed section, where free speech sorta reigns, so the paper stood behind that (as they should!) (within reason), touting stuff about "diversity of opinion" while apologizing for the offenses.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 7 April 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

whenever someone rights anything remotely left wing in my school's paper, some right wing nut job writes in and says totally unreasonable shit. I don't think they print the more nuanced/articulate right wingers. But anyway, the people are either: former students who were in the military or NURSING SCHOOL GRAD STUDENTS.

Also, the paper does have a number of conservative writers but they would likely never even go as far as openly decry homosexuality.

Alex in TCBY (ex machina), Thursday, 7 April 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

We brought the Ultimate Warrior to campus because we wanted to host a thought-provoking discussion from an individual who would appeal to a broader range of students than normal, given his background.

That was some sweet, sweet crack they smoked.

Heath W Fahle

Spokesman for the UCONN College Republicans

I assume this is his wrestling name.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 April 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

They should have tried to get Jesse Ventura if they wanted a conservative wrestler; that would have gotten the erudite exchange of ideas they were looking for without all of the attendant batshit insanity that comes with Ultimate Warrior.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 7 April 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

They should've had someone randomly splice together Michael Savage radio broadcasts, and they could've HAD the attendant batshit insanity of the Ultimate Warrior w/out dropping the bucks. No foot stomping, though.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 7 April 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

I am never going back to UW's website.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 7 April 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Oh, wait - that write-up was for a WRESTLING board / news place. No wonder STEROIDS gets top billing over Serious Issues!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 7 April 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

i haven't clicked on that wrestling website yet to inspect its designs - but am i right to guess that they're overly fond of tables?

http://www.livejournal.com/users/rspwfaq/169944.html

from Scott Keith's livejouranl:

"Hey Scott,

Long time reader, blaaaaaaaaaah blah blah. Listen, I attended the Ultimate Warrior "event" here at UConn on Tuesday night, and let me say that it wasn't as crazy as the news reports are making it out to be.

It was much crazier.

First of all, the reason it got to near-riot levels was because a group of extreme-leftist/hippies found out about Warrior and his stance on several issues and verbally attacked him from the audience every time he made an extremely-right-winged comment.

Warrior was in rare form that night. After he made a comment about how homosexuals are nowhere near on the same level as heterosexuals, which elicited an "oh my god" from a female student, he quickly replied with "Don't have an orgasm now honey, save it for later!" And when an obviously gay student started screaming at him from the back of the auditorium, Warrior replied with "I can't hear you with that thing in your mouth." Just crazy. For the record a good 3/4 of the audience were old wrestling fans who just came to see their childhood hero (like me)... it's a shame the section of students who were on a mission to cause trouble succeeded. The Warrior has been touring colleges for the last few years and this is the first time he was met with such... resistance. Anyways, here's a link from to an article in our college paper. Keep up the good work Scott

-Chris

http://www.dailycampus.com/news/2005/04/06/News/The-Warrior.Attacks-914467.shtml"

Geez, I'm shocked people are even surprised when Warrior goes off and says something completely inappropriate in public these days.

FYI, his response on his website is even funnier than the original story.

Huk-L, Thursday, 7 April 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

You're forgetting the greatest piece of Warrior politicking, when he blamed 9/11 on Clinton's blow job, as it meant that people didn't respect America anymore.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 7 April 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

I didn't realize steroids shrank skulls as well.

Huk-L, Thursday, 7 April 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

too bad that the folks there felt the need to be vocal without the proper ammunition. asking the warrior if his ultra-batshit politics were either caused by or just went along with his amazing ability to blow up* within a two-minute match.

(* "blow up" - wrestle-speak for when a wrestler gets tired during the match, and starts visibly sucking wind. it was rumored that the UW would do this after JUST running down to the ring.)

or if his politics were agreed upon by the legislative and judicial bodies of the One Warrior Nation.

or how Ed Leslie's been lately.

xpost HAHAHAHA. that reminds me of a joke made at the bar we watched Wrestlemania in, where somebody asked if anybody wanted to lay odds on a blown abdominal muscle during the Heavyweight match.

(explanatory note: one of the side effects of steroids is a weaking of the connective tissue attaching muscles to the skeleton. Triple H, the champ going into the match, has been repeatedly pointed out for inexplicably growing in physique over the years. he also blew out a quad in the middle of a TV match 4 years ago, which many, many people found very, very funny.)

The Ultimate Warrior came to PSU to speak once in like 2003 or so. I didn't catch it and nobody said much about it.

man i used to love this guy...

$V£N! (blueski), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

That's hilarious.

Somebody once claimed on Wrestlecrap to have seen the Ultimate Warrior at a gas station in a car with a big picture of himself in wrestling gear painted on it, with his WWF theme music blaring out of the stereo. I was inclined to think 'nah, that's made up, that's too ridiculous'. But then, it's the Ultimate Warrior.

If he googles this we're in SO MUCH TROUBLE.

Fergal (Ferg), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

$V£N! (blueski), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

stevem will be happy to hear that WWE will be releasing a 2 DVD history of The Warrior later this year.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

i dunno about that, i think i would enjoy watching Royal Rumble '93 again tho (or whichever one Ric Flair won)

$V£N! (blueski), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

1992 Royal Rumble, except Warrior wasn't in that (it was during his 11 months off period before WM VIII). It is the best Rumble ever, and if you have £30 hanging about doing nothing, "The Ultimate Ric Flair Collection" (nine hours of Flair) is the best DVD ever.

Looks like someone isn't happy with their 2-disc WWE Retrospective:

http://p220.ezboard.com/fwarriorcentralfrm2.showMessage?topicID=645.topic

...I can reveal to you that this DVD is not going to be one that fans
will want to see. Many talents have appeared on this disc to talk
about Warrior - Bobby Heenan, Pat Patterson, Paul London, HHH, JR,
John Cena, Batista, Hogan, Eddie, Benoit and others - and every single
one of them has painted him a negative light. All the comments make
fun of Warrior, and talk about what an idiot, flash in the pan, and
lucky guy he was.

There are also two bonus features on disc 2. The first is "Ultimate
Impressions" in which current WWE superstars do their best
impersonation of Warrior. It is sad to say the least - Benoit foams at
the mouth and yells at the top of his voice...HHH messes his hair all
up and pretends to be Warrior shaking the ropes, and Batista ties some
bootlaces around his arms and talks to his hands. More insulting,
there is a "Warrior Calamaties" montage of times when Warrior has made
mistakes - slipping over, bloopers during interviews, botched moves,
etc....

"bloopers during interviews"? they fit all those on ONE DVD?

kingfish (Kingfish), Saturday, 23 July 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

In the interest of full disclosure, I must tell you I have watched Brokeback Mountain no less than 45 times and I own the Limited Edition DVD, signed by Willie Nelson a short time after he wrote that queer cowboy song as a tribute to the courage of the producers and actors who broke such incredible creative ground when they made their agenda-less movie. Serious. Until I saw Bendover Brokeback, Braveheart was my favorite movie. But the love scenes of Brokeback sucked me right in and I had no choice but to give myself over to the passion of its wide open range, if you get my drift. Such courage this young man and his collaegues have. Reminds me of the courage of classic movie stars, where during the War they enlisted and flew bomber planes and fought on frontlines, then came back and picked up their lives and careers right where they left off, without anti-American sentiment, whining and complaining, or self-destructive self indulgence. I’m equally inspired.

Apparently, Leather Hedger had sleeping troubles and anxiety and dealt with terrible mood swings. So do soldiers but they don’t self-destructively fuck up their lives. In fact, they don’t sleep, handle anxiety and mood swings while dealing with whether or not they might at any moment lose their life. And they do this all the while they are dangerously protecting the freedom of others to fuck up their own. By the way, how many 28 (or older or younger) year old soldiers met their death yesterday? It’s not easy to find out. None of them made the headlines of any news.

By today’s standard, though, I do have to agree that he was a great father. Perhaps even greater then the father of the year, Hulk Hogan. After all, Leather Hedger did what it took to kill himself. His kid is without a father, yes, but the negative influence is now removed and his own child has the chance for a full recovery. Hogan, on the other hand, won’t go quite that far. He insists on sticking around to keep further ruining, and profiting off of, the parentally mismanaged lives of his own children.

It is sad and tragic….that we don’t demand attention be paid to greater things.
