COUCH NAP

sometimes only a couch nap will do.

Why is the couch nap so satisfying? Why not walk into the bedroom?

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

It's a throw back to more decadent times.

i often get sleep paralysis when i take couch naps. for whatever reason.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking opium dens.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

every time i take a couch nap i wake up groggy and sweating! it's weird!

ryan (ryan), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

I only have couch naps after teh weed. And I wake up in the foulest moods ever.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

i wish that i could do the couch-nap thing. i could when i was an undergrad, at the job where i interned. it was AWESOME.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

All napping is great. I have many weird dreams in the process. I recommend napping to the Olivia Tremor Control.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

The couch nap is so much more casual and laid-back than the formal and staid bed nap.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

I don't have a couch. All napping takes place in bed. But that may be because half my life takes place in bed.

We Are All Full Of Kate (kate), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

chairnaps are TEH SUXOR.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

I like to couch nap with a record on the stereo. Usually I just close my eyes and lie down without falling asleep though.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Top napping music:

* Built to Spill - Perfect From Now On
* Japancakes - Sleepy Strange
* Polvo - Exploded Drawing
* Olivia Tremor Control - Dusk at Cubist Castle
* Philistines Jr - The Sinking of the SS Danehower

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

I am a big fan of the hammock nap in the summertime.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Though, maybe Japancakes should be exspelled as I'm sure they just make albums for people to nap to.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

chair naps are like extended comedy pieces--you just fall into and out of sleep constantly. lately i have been falling asleep in the library and then suddenly JERKING wide awake to the startled stares of those around me. back when i played football in high school i would have dreams about it and suddenly my arm would shoot out in a throwing motion.

ryan (ryan), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

I don't like naps. They don't refresh, they make me spacey and groggy. I too suffer from the sleep paralysis, the couch nap is not restful. It's better just to drink a Rockstar and keep dancin' 'til you crash.

andy --, Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

I like napping to Aphex Twin "26 Mixes for Cash." You know that weird feeling you get when you wake up and don't quite know what's going on? Aphex Twin triples it.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

Couch nap just happens. You don't plan on it, but you succumb to it.

Bed nap is a planned event & falling asleep on command is stressful. Watching Golf, Bowling or Racing usually helps.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

I often get chair nap, too. It's a big chair.

happy fun ball (kenan), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

I used to nap in my office a couple of jobs ago when the bosses were out playing golf or hooky. Close the door, turn off the lights, kick my feet up on the desk, recline, and snoooooooooooooze.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

head on desk naps are a learned art i think. waking up with dead arm can be quite fun...

ryan (ryan), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Best thing about chair naps = no bedhead.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

I'll gladly take bedhead over a sore neck, though.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

i took a nap flat on the living room floor the other day. it was very satisfying.

ryan (ryan), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Some other good napping records:

Evan Parker & George Lewis - "From Saxophone and Trombone"
Jenny Scheinman - "Shalagaster"
LaMonte Young - "Second Dream of the High-Tension Line Stepdown Transformer"

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

I get sore necks from every non-bed sleep. Part of it (re: my couch) has to do w/ the couch being old & worn out & saggy.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

I hate when I fall asleep watching Saturday morning cartoons and wake up to the local used auto shopping network or whatever.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Sometimes, I'm just really sleepy, but feel lame about going to bed so early or in the middle of the day. So I rationalize to myself that napping on the couch is TOTALLY different..

Plus, the couch nap can be useful if you don't want to sleep for too long but are juuust lazy enough not to set an alarm. Whenever I sleep on the couch something (neighbors, roomie, weather, traffic, what have you) always wakes me up before I waste my entire afternoon.

Dan M. (OutDatWay), Thursday, 7 April 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

ha well i have a futon...and more than half the time keep it in the "couch" position / option since it's better for my back to lie thus constricted while falling asleep ...it really does feel more comfortable after a while. even if you are consciously trying to go to sleep this wy (as i do, since i've made the couch my "bed"), you have less room to move or toss and turn, and pretty soon your body just gives up and passes out. so it's speedier than bedding

otherwise i own a proper couch...and have lately been sleeping a lot on that for a change, past month or two. but due to my recent, mysterious bug-biting things..i'm switching back to the futon(-in-a-couch position)

whats dud about your couch being your regular bed though - all the stains (you know what i mean...like um, food stains)

Vic in LA, Thursday, 7 April 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I used to have these friends that all lived in one big house together and they let this guy sleep on their couch all the time. It reaked of boy spit and feet.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 7 April 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

I used to have these friends that all lived in one big house together and they let this guy sleep on their couch...

Was one of these friends Dave Chappelle?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 7 April 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if Gear ever takes a nap on the couch anymore.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 7 April 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

it's my life and it's my wife.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 7 April 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

although the last time i took a couch nap i woke up and four of my teeth were sore!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 7 April 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

cue hilarious jokes & speculation.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 7 April 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

Nothing beats those unbelievably strange dreams I get while couch napping.

Favorite nap music:

Eno - Compact Forest Proposal
Any Harold Budd

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 7 April 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Whenever I have a couch nap the cats decide to prey on me and then fight.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 7 April 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

If I'm working a backshift at work I find that, when lying on the couch about an hour before I have to leave for work I find myself the comfiest I've EVER been, knowing full well I can't properly use the time and have a good nap. After work, well, the moment's gone.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Thursday, 7 April 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

OTM. When, on days like today, I have four hours between classes I often go home and watch some PBS or Cops or whatever, and that couch is something I could just sink into endlessly. But I can't. Because I have to get up and go back to Manhattan. After school I may as well just nap in bed, but that is, as posters above have said, much more structured. Ain't no alarm clock near the couch--I wake up when I wake up.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 7 April 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Damn, I really want a nap now. But it's 7:50pm :(

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 7 April 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

i wake up cranky from naps, I can't take them. unless they are at my desk in the middle of the afternoon.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 7 April 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Damn, I really want a nap now. But it's 7:50pm :(

Then do it! You can nap, get up about 9, stay up til 11, then go to proper sleep!

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Friday, 18 June 2010 00:51 (fifteen years ago)

thirteen years pass...

Today is my first day off in 8 weeks and I only had 3 hrs sleep last night. oh yes this is going to be an epic couch sleep. I have been thinking about this moment for weeks. Going to put a covid mask over my eyes and take a few codydramols so I will sleep through any inconsiderate bastards that try and phone me or knock at my door.

Visiting my brother interstate and his friends took us out. I am pretty sure we dropped six pints in 90 minutes. Came home for dinner and BAM, unexpected couch nap in front of nieces and nephew.

assert (matttkkkk), Monday, 4 September 2023 12:17 (two years ago)

I have a big armchair in my office which is not good for napping UNLESS I place my guitar stool in front of it and drape my legs over it. Just comfortable enough for a 20 minute midday nap. Not as good as a couch nap but not bad either. I love couch naps.
