For some reason nothing will work on my internet right now except for ILX. How is that possible?

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 7 April 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

we won!

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 7 April 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

Maybe we're the last people left alive on earth.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 7 April 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

Nah, I managed to get to that wierd Ms MacDonalds Girl's LJ site. Maybe it's just ILX and her left to repopulate.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Thursday, 7 April 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

But basic stuff like Google and Yahoo won't come up for me.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 7 April 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

Oops, there they are again.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 7 April 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

we lost :(

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 7 April 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

No, sorry, google works now but other things still don't.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 7 April 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

If you're using IE it sometimes has issues with typing 'quick' versions of the site address, for example typing "google.com". Try typing the whole http://www.google.com
Doubt that'll help.

Craig Gilchrist (Craig Gilchrist), Thursday, 7 April 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

Cache poisoning?

Alex in TCBY (ex machina), Thursday, 7 April 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

sans.org won't come up either.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 7 April 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

So I'm not the only one having this problem?

I was able to get Sans.org actually. Google comes up intermittently. Yahoo came up all fucked up and then I couldn't log in.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 7 April 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

The thing is, I'm not getting redirected to other sites as described in the cache poisoning thing.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 7 April 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if it's connected, but my Spybot keeps bringing up something called "DSO Exploit" and every time I delete it it comes back.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 7 April 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

########################################################################
## What exactly is DNS cache poisoning?
########################################################################

Basically, it is method for an attacker to change the IP address that a
hostname resolves to. For instance the hostname www.cisco.com points to
the IP address 198.133.219.25. A DNS cache poisoning attack allows an
attacker to change the IP address for a host/domain and point it to a
different IP address.

Alex in TCBY (ex machina), Thursday, 7 April 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

right, I wager that backbone providers are blocking traffic to the spoof sites

Alex in TCBY (ex machina), Thursday, 7 April 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

So, like, what do I do?

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 7 April 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

I had to go into my router and add static DNS servers (borrowed from my brother, I don't know if they're from his work ISP or home or how that works), which seems to make everything work.

I don't know how I could be infected, as I'm using a Mac through a Linksys router. Should I do a hard reset on the router, or is the problem mostly on the ISP (Comcast) end?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 7 April 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

The problem can propagate to you if your provider is vulnerable.

Alex in TCBY (ex machina), Thursday, 7 April 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

this just happened to me, several of my saint louis type sites (like archcitychronicle.com) are coming up with this source html:

[iframe src='http: //url-exchange.net' width=1 height=1][/iframe]
[iframe src='http: //toolbarpartner.com/in.php?wm=den' width=1 height=1][/iframe]

(subbed square brackets for pointy ones obv; I don't know what that second link does so I put a space in both)

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

tell your ISP to stop using fucking Windows machines for DNS

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

Fuck, this finally explains the last week of my life! Thank you ILX tech support!

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

Dude I fucking know! Luckily I know most of the people who run these sites, I'm gonna email them now and make sure they know what's what.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

ITS YOUR ISP NOT THE PROVIDER FOR THE SITES IN QUESTION

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:03 (twenty years ago)

are all of us with sucky internet on comcast??

ronny longjohns (ronny longjohns), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

So this only affects one who has an upstream ISP using windoze boxen for DNS? I think in that case I'm fine. Most sensible ISPs use Unix of some flavour.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

WE ARE ALL POXY FULES!

WE ARE ALL POXY FULES!

EVERYONE!

Ian Riese-Moraine. To Hell with you and your gradual evolution! (Eastern Mantra), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, yes, I live in a city where SBC has a monopoly on high-speed in most areas, nearly everyone has the same provider/same problem, didn't mean to imply this was the fault of the sites/servers in question.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:12 (twenty years ago)

The calprob output gives better results than BIND 8, however:

you lost me right there.

kephm, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

someone post ip address of another dns server which i can try, or email to ohronny at earthlink dot net

pretty please?

ronny longjohns (ronny longjohns), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

Dont DNS servers have access lists tho (and hence you cant use one not with your network)?

Or am I just thinking of SMTP servers?

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

i don't know, but someone above mentioned using one off their brother or something...

ronny longjohns (ronny longjohns), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

I just switched from my wireless router to my landlady's, which seems to have cleared it up for now. Guess she doesn't have sucky comcast like me...

the krza (krza), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

So either there's no access list to the DNS I'm now using, or it thinks I'm her.

the krza (krza), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

Well if her router is using her DSL/cable, it would think it was her yes. Its the gateway connection to the'net that does the DNS, usually. I think. I could be talking out of my bum here, LANs arent really my thing.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:31 (twenty years ago)

Most sensible ISPs use Unix of some flavour.

Are there any sensible ISPs? I'm pretty sure mine (Verizon) wouldn't qualify.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

In any case, the answer here is obviously to call up your ISP, so that they can identify if there is a problem on their end and help you on yours.

Guh.

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

ha ha ha ha haa haa.... right.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

others having trouble - look for ORSC public access DNS list - seems to work for me

ronny longjohns (ronny longjohns), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

Is it possible that things got screwed up at my ISP and they sort of fixed it but my router got hosed? And then I got a new router which works but something is still slightly screwy and intermittent at my ISP's end? Or do I have some kind of other crazy problem going on as well?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:41 (twenty years ago)

The problem went away for a couple days, now I'm having trouble again -- internet is working in this stop-start kind of way.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 02:19 (twenty years ago)

this happened to me last year, I replaced my router and it stopped. try hooking your ethernet cord directly from the modem into your computer and see if it's better (this is assuming a lot about your setup).

a banana (alanbanana), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

Same here. Fuck a comcast.

Tyrone Willie Demetrius DeAndre DeShawn (deangulberry), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's got to be Comcast, which is teh eating one dick.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

HAHAHAHA! I have Comcast too and having so many problems tonight. Fuck a comcast INDEED.

---- (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

Let's all fuck a comcast.

Tyrone Willie Demetrius DeAndre DeShawn (deangulberry), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

To be fair, Cablevision also munched the genitalia.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

for real, check out some of these other dns servers homies
