I loved this book, and it fucked me up too. It's one of the darker books I've read.

oh, and I saw the Japanese movie and didn't think much of it. The movie didn't create the darkness and desperation that defined the book.

I was wondering about the movie versions as I read it. On one hand it seems like it would make a great movie because the plot is so intricate and twist-y but then I was thinking that some of the more disturbing scenes wouldn't really have the same impact on screen... and I don't know how anyone could film that scene at the end in the abandoned factory. i actually had a bit of a hard time with the end - i don't want to spoil it... but ultimately i did admire how unflinching she was. how natsuo kirino never backs off at the end. at times I thought it was kind of feminist-by-the-numbers but then a few pages later i'd be thinking she's a total misogynist... then i'd think she just hated all humanity... and that she's right! i haven't really felt like this about a book since i read houellebecq for the first time.

You're right. The movie version has a different ending that is much more optimistic. If I recall correctly, the factory sequence is not there at all. Also, one particular character isn't killed in the movie version, which I thought was a real cop-out.

I agree that Kirino seems to have a mysanthropic streak. The book is certainly a scathing critique of certain aspects of contemporary Japan, like materialsim and a kind of lower middle class despair. It portrayed the warts of Japan beautifully.
