nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

Are there any ilxors there?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

I am very sorry you have to be there.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Although if you really really like Mark Twain, then, well, then there's one thing you can do.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Also you can admire how all of the buildings downtown stick out like sore thumbs.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

hahaha OTM

I get the feeling I'm just gonna spend a lot of time drinking at the bar.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

The hotel bar, that is. I hear it's bland, but not that bland.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

on the random city note, i am spending friday night in madison wisconsin "on business"; what is there to do in madison wisconsin???

dave k, Monday, 11 April 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

(don't mean to derail - i've never been to hartford)

dave k, Monday, 11 April 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

If you are Wallace Stevens, you may write exquisite poetry in Hartford, CT, in addition to other more mundane pursuits.

Aimless (Aimless), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

Yes, take it from me and Wallace, Hartford is enough to drive you to poetry.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Madison, Wisc., is supposedly a big hippie-style place and a college town -- surely there's at least a little to do there?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Madison is really pretty and nice, but I couldn't tell you what to do there. You might want to start a separate thread, there are at least two ILXors that live there but they might not open this thread.

BACK TO CONNECTICUT YOU FLY-BY-NIGHT SPAZZES!

Casuistry OTM re: poetry - I'm living proof!

Nick, as a person that lives just outside of Hartford, but rarely ventures into there, I can safely say that you are right in thinking you will be doing the drinking a whole helluva lot. (You'll probably want to drink in West Hartford.) (NOTE: I don't drink much.) Unless you can get a car & drive up to the Berlin Turnpike. You can bowl there. Also, porn shops. Also also, strip clubs. Also also also, gun shops.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

will you have a car? (xp)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

I don't think they're springing for a car this time. The hotel I'm staying at has some kinda shuttle dealie that will take me "places".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Places outside of Hartford?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

You could also visit my aunt in East Hartford, or my great aunt, who is in a nursing home somewhere in Hartford. She turns 97 this year! She will outlive us all!

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

If you do go to East Hartford you can see the school where I went for 5th grade.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

Within Hartford, you might want to check out Real Art Ways while you're in town - it's just outside of downtown, in a sorta seedy spot (but, then, aside from the 2 blocks of downtown, Hartford is all seed). There's also the Wadsworth Antheneum, smack dab in the center of downtown. And did I mention the drinking?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 11 April 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

youn, Friday, 21 October 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

Yay! My hometown!

Okay, so it sucks. But I know what there is to do.

Food: Italian is what to hit. Carbone's on Franklin Ave. has been there for eons, and along with Carmichael's was the Mob's favorite place to eat. Braza is the new hotspot in town (its a Churrascaria) for Friday nights when it comes to eating, and that's on Farmington Ave. Azul also has a following.

The only club of value in Hartford right now is Barcelona. Club Blue is "ehhh", and other than that, you're driving to Gotham or Hippodrome. For rock, there's the Webster. That's it. No indie acts really stop in, and only recently have metal bands been booked. Hip hop goes to Toad's Place and Hippodrome, and typically nowhere in Hartford.

The Atheneum is a decent art museum.

Drinking? Best spots are all really outside the city. Most bars have pitiful tap selection. City Steam, however, does have some decent stuff that's their own. Nothing super exceptional, but if you can't make it out to the Thomas Hooker Brewery, it'll do.

If you're into sports, The AHL has a hockey team in Hartford that plays at the Civic Center (associated with the New York Rangers) and there's tennis at the Armory with the Hartford Fox Force.

The Bushnell is the keystone of stage and theater in Hartford. It brings in the largest productions, bar none.

The Berlin Turnpike is a blast, especially on Friday nights. Renowned for street racing, and lots of 50s kitsch everywhere with tons of cheap, decaying motels chock full of bad architecture. And some cool looking diners.

Institute of Living? Which wing? I actually have keycard access. haha.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Saturday, 22 October 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

woah, wtf! The funny thing is, this guy would actually take great delight in some guy being like, "So I post to this thing on the internet that your friend Emily posts to and she told me to come visit you."

In fact, she died about a week before her birthday. RIP.

NYT: Downtown Hartford Stirs From Slumber

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Pshyeah.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 19:23 (twenty years ago)

I thought it had potential

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 19:24 (twenty years ago)

the insides of the downtown oases seemed to have a real community feel. well, at least a business community feel.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 19:25 (twenty years ago)

Has potential, needs a grocery store within walking distance of the hot new housing. And, no, the dollar store doesn't count.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 19:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm gonna be biased regardless of what happens, tho. & I never leave my house / condo / bed, anyway, so what the fuck do I know. If this rebirth is actually happening just 15 minutes from my front stoop, then kudos.

Every time the NYT publishes an article about CT, it's like Successful Big Brother is looking in on Waylaid Listless Little Brother.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 19:28 (twenty years ago)

yecch, hartford. well, it's not bridgeport.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 21:17 (twenty years ago)

Glory be!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 21:22 (twenty years ago)

>Has potential, needs a grocery store within walking distance of the hot new housing. And, no, the dollar store doesn't count.<

The Save-A-Lot or the Wal-Mart on New Park Av. ain't gonna cut it. But if people really are moving downtown, then a Target or something of the like is bound to open there for them. And that in turn creates more jobs, and then more people people have money to spend on things, which creates more need for stores and the like. I mean, I hope like hell that it happens. A NHL franchise coming back would be ACE, because Club Blue and Barcelona alone don't cut it for what's happening in Hartford.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 22:43 (twenty years ago)

Ding ding ding ding ding!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 5 January 2006 00:08 (twenty years ago)

"well, it's not Bridgeport!" is a reasonably accurate slogan.

that article conveniently left out the shooting/murder a few blocks away that happened around christmas.

and 'hot new housing' sounds nice but i live in some of it and there are vacancies galore and this is before the highrise comes on line.

Jimmy_tango, Thursday, 5 January 2006 00:17 (twenty years ago)

not right in hartford, but fairly close by is rein's deli - off i think exit 65 on rt 84. its a great great place!

Yeah, the highrise seemed like a really really really bad idea all the way around. I just hope its not turned into commercial, because I'd like a cheap downtown condo in a couple years.
